But every once in a while we're reminded that the idea is fantastic, it's just the lackluster execution that's let gamers down. Case in point: this Bioshock faceplate is a really great design, but limited to only 5,100 units distributed to a closed retail and fanboy populace. And the first great faceplate we get in a long while is not for sale.

The result? These faceplates have been moving for $50-$100+ dollars on ebay. Microsoft should commission faceplates like Target commissions big name designers, make everything limited edition, plan better co-marketing and send me this Bioshock faceplate for free. Because it's not too late for faceplates to take off and I'm bored with my 360. It's as if we've been having the same sex for years. Wait...

<![CDATA[Pre-Order Eternal Sonata; Receive Gorgeous Faceplate]]> The official Eternal Sonata website has appeared as if by magic and has announced that the game is now available for pre-order Gamestop/EB Games. Now, I know a lot of you have the concept of pre-ordering, but this one comes with a pretty great bonus. Pre-order now and receive one five custom faceplates for your 360. They are really quite stunning and I'm not sure if you get your choice of if you're stuck with whatever one they give you, but my choice would probably be the dandy fellow wearing black with the tall top hat. Although seeing as I just came home with the exclusive BioShock faceplate as a gift from my lovely local EB Games clerk, I'd be hard pressed to remove it even for the likes of these.

<![CDATA[DICE Press Get The Schwag Shaft]]> I sit down with analyst and fellow DICE attendee Mark Berman this morning who proudly ponders out loud "I wonder why Sony is giving away copies of Resistance. Everyone who has a PS3 already has this game." Wait. What? Resistance? Gratis? "It's included in the welcome package."

Minutes to spare, I dash to the press room—I always pass on these things—grabbing one of the amBX branded messenger bags and an Insomniac stamped camo bag. Very fannypack-ish. As I dig through my bag, I quickly realize we get the shaft. No Resistance for the press. Oh well.

So what goods were attendees at DICE 07 showered with? The bags, a DICE branded Xbox 360 face plate, a GameTap photo frame, a nice little notebook with a Target logo, a massive long sleeve polo with DICE embroidery plus various dry goods and over the counter drugs. Look for these items in a future Kotaku giveaway near you!

<![CDATA[Camy Pro Dual Injected PSP Faceplates]]> Camy International announces the launch of their new website, Camy Pro Gear, where they feature their Dual Injection PSP faceplates. Like the official Sony faceplate, these feature a layer of clear plastic over a layer of colored plastic, creating a beautiful under-glass effect with the clear layer also acting as the lens over the screen. As you can see, they've got some pretty attractive designs as well.
camyprogear.jpgI've been looking for a way to spruce up my PSP every since my nephew borrowed mine for the weekend and returned it looking like it had been tap-danced on in metal cleats. This seems like an interesting way to refresh my PSP without having to settle for plain old black. My only worry is installation, as I've been known to have electronics explode in a shower of sparks as soon as I touch a screwdriver to them. I'll let you folks know how that goes once mine arrives, assuming I don't accidentally kill myself in the process.

<![CDATA[Halo Faceplate]]>

Gamespot is listing a Halo faceplate for the Xbox 360 shipping on Oct. 24. While I love the idea of a Halo faceplate, this particular one is lame. Not only is it a horizontal faceplate, but it's just a tin picture of the Master Chief. I hope Bungie whips up something more like art and less like a screenshot when Halo 3 rolls around.

<![CDATA[Customize 360 Faceplates]]>

Have it your way, Xboxers. The GameFace kit consists of a two-piece faceplate that holds personalized templates placed between high-grade clear polycarbonate. Software lets folks save and print oodles of custom faceplates on blank templates, enabling people to do witty things like print out Sony or Nintendo logos and tack them onto their 360s. Hilarity ensues.

<![CDATA[Rare Xbox 360 Prototype Faceplate]]>

The guys at gaming site lowdown411 have come into posession of a rare, prototype Xbox 360 faceplate. Last May, Microsoft previewed a buncha plates. Some of them have made it to retailers, while some haven't, including this one. A faceplate with "CONSOLE" on it that you put on your Xbox 360 console. Geddit? Humor so dry, I need a glass of water.

Not really "free" per se. Still gotta buy Call of Duty 2 for the 360 this week. But, it's better than a stick in the eye.

<![CDATA[Rare (Step Off, Joanna) 360 Faceplates]]> Super Rare, etc

Lowdown411 got a bunch of pictures from a private collector of rare 360 faceplates. These aren't Kameo or PD0 plates, but oddities like the E305 360 Faceplate numbered 1 out of 5,000. The Xbox 360 faceplate: the baseball card of the 21st century.

<![CDATA[Businesses Cash In on 360 Faceplates]]> Big mouth strikes again

It was bound to happen. With the Xbox 360 a little over a week old, companies are already trying to make a buck on the console's cover-plates. Facetags appears to be one of the slickest, offering gamers the choice to create their own or buy one of their pre-made plates for $9.99. The images they've got seem tame, but hint at the possible over-18 Xbox skins market. Shudder to think.

Yup, that's a Project Gotham Racing 3 faceplate. Nope, I don't have the foggiest about it. And likewise, the guy that sent in the tip is in the dark as well. He had received the link from someone who wouldn't tell him anything. Maybe there are more covers out there. Maybe that guy that found the image knows. If so, he's not telling.

<![CDATA[Despite Confusion, E3 360 Swag Works After All]]> xbox360_faceplates_thumbs.jpg

The Xbox 360 Faceplate that Microsoft was handing out at its E3 party doesn't even fit the console, after all. There were tons of them on ebay in the wake of the show and now all of the suckers who bought the "Limited Edition" faceplate for their Xbox 360 are screwed. It's still collectible and limited, even though it doesn't work, right?

Update: A resourceful Kotaku reader, R. Peter Clark, is refuting the claim that the Xbox 360 E3 faceplate doesn't work with the console. In fact, he even supplied proof that it does. See, if I had an Xbox 360 already, this wouldn't have been a problem. Hasn't anyone broke the street date, yet? Sheesh. Thanks again to R. Peter Clark for clearing up the mess (hopefully).
