Top Travel Spots for Gamers

With an aging gaming population comes more gamers with money, which means ... money to spend on travel. Bonnie Ruberg takes a look at where gamers would go given $1,500 for expenses for a 'game-related' vacation. PAX? E For All? Tokyo Game Show? ... Disneyland? I can't remember the last proper vacation I had, but I can say definitively I wouldn't be planning it around a convention or expo. In fact, a weekend off with time to do nothing but hang out would be a treat right now: More »

PAX 2008

Everyone And The ECTO-1 Heading To PAX

This year's Penny Arcade Expo is going to be bigger than ever, and that's good because scaling down would have probably been a bad idea. Instead they've taken the more practical route, adding more space, more exhibitors, and more 80's movie relics. That's right, the ECTO-1 of Ghostbusters fame will be on hand the entire weekend, making the other exhibitors like Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Activision, and Ubisoft look like second stringers in comparison.

"We nearly doubled our exhibition hall and added another 80,000 square feet of content overall, so the show is going to be pretty amazing this year," says Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo. "You should come. I think you would like it."

I've a feeling he could be right. This year's show takes place August 29th through the 31st in sunny Seattle Washington. Hit the jump for a full list of exhibitors. Be prepared to scroll.

Microsoft Signs On For E For All 08

The E For All Expo got off to a somewhat rocky start last year with relatively low attendance following the decision to hold the event the same weekend as Penny Arcade's PAX event, but things are looking up for the 2008 show already. They've got their own weekend (Oct. 3-5), and now Microsoft has thrown in their hat as an exhibitor. IDG World Expo CEO and mouthpiece Mary Dolaher is ecstatic.

“Microsoft’s presence at the 2008 event will help us build on the great success of last year’s inaugural E for All event, and will further our goal of building an exciting and cutting-edge event that brings the best and newest games to gamers of all types. We look forward to a terrific 2008 event, and to having the opportunity to bring even more great game products to the great gamers who attend E for All.”

Last year Microsoft passed on the first E For All, so this early sign of support casts a very encouraging light of hope on the event's second year. Dolaher promises more participants will be announced in the coming weeks.

ESA's $5M Change of Heart

ESA Spent $5 Million To Move E3 For a Year

The Entertainment Software Association paid more than $5 million last year to stop hosting their annual trade show in Los Angeles, only to bring their new, downsized show back to the city a year later, according to IRS documents obtained by Kotaku.

The expense of breaking a contract that locked the show in LA through 2012, along with the expected drop in E3 revenue associated with the event's downsizing, led the association's board to drastically increase their membership dues last year.

Rich Taylor, Entertainment Software Association senior vice president of communications and research, said that all of the changes made by the association, including the costly jump from LA and the increase in dues, were decisions made by the group's board, which is made up of executives from 19 of the association's 25 member companies.

"I don’t think it’s a mistake," he said. "There was a model in Santa Monica that we tried and after the event we polled participants across the board about what they thought of it and then we tried to figure out what we could do to make it better and returning to the Los Angeles Convention Center was the right decision."

The Inaugural Adventure Gaming Expo

Are you a big fan of adventure games? Do you know who Scott Adams is? Al Lowe? Chris Jones? In order, they are the father of adventure gaming, the creator of the Leisure Suit Larry series, and the creator of the Tex Murphy series, and all three will be appearing this August at the inaugural Adventure Gaming Expo in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The weekend long celebration of all things typey, pointy, and clicky formerly known as AdventureCon, will be taking place from August 29th to the 31st, and will feature panels, a charity auction, autograph sessions, and even a live-action adventure game running throughout the event. Yes, all that adventure gaming goodness, plus LARPing! You can head over to the official website and register until May 31st for $99, after which it jumps up to an even more ridiculous price. Still, sounds like a fun time to be had by all. I do enjoy a good LARP now and then. More »

E For All Returning In October, PAX Gets August All To Itself

Sure, it attracted 18,000 people last year, but with a planned move to August 28-30 - ie the same time as PAX - this year's show was always going to struggle. Which is probably why the show's organizers have announced that the 2008 E for All will instead be taking place between October 3-5. They're trying to spin this as "a decision that reflects the great success of the last year's event — also held in October — as well as the positive feedback from exhibitors and attendees about the Fall timing", and if that's what helps them get to sleep at night, then that's what counts.

Major Companies No-Shows To Korea's G-Star Expo

It's a sad, sad week if you're the G-Star Expo in Korea these days ('Korea's largest video and computer game expo,' happening next week): lots of Korean companies aren't attending, and you can forget major foreign companies (with the exception of Microsoft). Nintendo? Despite recently announcing a planned launch of the Wii next year, they said thanks but no. Sony? No PS3 games for you, G-Star! Blizzard? Hey, why would anyone want to exhibit StarCraft 2 in Korea of all places? Admittedly, companies like Blizzard have little need to attend yet another event in Korea, having hosted their own shindigs this year; but the general complaint seems to be 'Too much effort, too much money, not enough pay off.' It sounds like a fun time, though, and the past expos have been 'dotted with controversies': More »

Penny Arcade Expo 08 Dated

The Penny Arcade folks today announced the dates for next year's Penny Arcade Expo, set once again in the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.

The show will take place from Aug. 29 through Aug. 31 with attendance expected in the "forty-seven million bajillion" range, slightly up from the 37,000 that made it to this year's fourth annual show. Exhibitor packets are available now and attendee registration is expected to open up in January.

I really missed not going this year. I decided, instead, to hit up Leipzig with Mike and Mark and then get really really drunk and sing Hungry Like the Wolf on stage in front of one German guy. Next year I'll either be repeating that or maybe I'll kick off a cross-country caravan of readers and PAX attendees to Washington State. Haven't decided yet. If only I could buy high quality German beer at PAX, then I would be set.

EA Signs On With E For All

Well the E for All exhibitor list just grew by one, but it is a pretty big one. Electronics Arts will be making their presence known at the E for All Expo in Los Angeles this October, joining Nintendo on the show floor as the only other major gaming company I can find that is confirmed to be attending.
"Electronic Arts' participation reflects the essence of E for All - providing consumers with unprecedented access to the leading video game companies in the business," said Mary Dolaher, CEO of IDG World Expo, which produces the event. "No matter what role you play in the world of video games, E for All is designed for you, because its focus is on what matters - the games. Just like EA's products, E for All is made for all kinds of gamers.
Well good for them. I'm sure now that a big time business like EA is going to be showing up the rest of the game industry will fall into line. Probably just waiting for EA to make the first move. With great power comes great responsibility. More »

Dragon Quest Castle Appears in Japan

As part of Fuji Television's Adventure King 2007 celebration, Square Enix have erected a funhouse style Dragon Quest castle in the Japanese city of Odaiba. The inside houses a maze (and presumably other funhouse staples), a few Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road cabinets and, of course, a gift shop.

Close by in the Fuji Television studios, Square Enix is holding the Dragon Quest Odaiba Expo 2007 featuring more game cabinets, a Dragon Quest figurine collection and something called an iMode corner (you can read more about iMode here) From now until September second you can check out the castle and the Expo if you happen to be in the area and get a free Slime cell phone accessory for your time. Nothing like that sweet, sweet swag.
