Procedurally generated MMO? That sounds either extremely complex, or a disaster waiting to happen.
I guess I'll grab it just to shot up the data.
haha, was gonna go "F-k me what's he hosting it off, a 56.6k modem?" as it said it'd be 45mins till a 4.5mb file downloaded. but then it quickly got it's act up.

Edit: okay, it pretty much makes a nice procedurally generated scrolling landscape with dud logi n and account button. and he has a manual for the game included, which obviously does nothing. tbh he could of just sent out one of those quick benchmark programs you run when applying for a Beta.

@deanbmmv: This -is- the benchmark program. It just saves him bandwidth for when he wants to allow folks access... they re-use the benchmark program to do the signup and play process too.

Cos its only in alpha now, so many of these folks grabbing it won't keep hold of the client till the Beta rolls around in a year or so.

@deanbmmv: You'll find that re-cording a working product to perform like a whole other application is a gigantic waste of time.

Either way, it is procedurally generated, and it is pretty complex. Complex doesn't always mean "hard to learn" though, and hopefully it won't.

@Draco_2k: Well Spore was procedural, and fairly easy to learn. and I don't mean complex to play, but complex to use workably as an MMO. Cos everyone would be in their own procedurally generated area.

@deanbmmv: I can hardly see it being worse off than GMod, and I know people who couldn't conjure a single coherent sentence to save their life but are also able to build working planes in it.

Then again, if it is complex, that's kind of the draw for the game you plan on playing for a long while, isn't it?.. I wouldn't know...

But, as usual, there's only one way to find out.

@Draco_2k: I'm not saying the gameplay will be complex. In fact I re-enforced what I meant by complex twice.
And now for the third.
Producing a consistent world for everyone ...but procedurally, is like an oxymoron of epic proportions. I'm sure he'll possibly find some way to work, but as of now we have a rolling landscape to look at n thats it.

I've been following this game for awhile now, and I had, up until now, had the impression that it was going to be a non-violent game without enemies. Was I mistaken, or has the game had a change in direction?

This seems fantastic. I'm a little skeptical since the last man to preach the wonders of procedural verbs was Will Wright with Spore, but I don't think the disappointments of Spore were necessarily caused by the programming. As everyone else has said, it tried to be too many different kinds of games without giving each genre its proper polish, leaving me (though not everyone!) somewhat disappointed. Love's site's writeups, vague in a way I might have viewed as tantalizing, pre-Spore, still entice me despite my knowledge that I will never find what I really am searching for when I play these famously open-ended games: a cooler, less depressing version of real life with "save" and "load" buttons.

I'd give Love a shot, though.

If you need to cheat a lot to show players the interesting parts, it also means they will waste a lot of time playing what you consider the boring parts. not good. I want to have fun playing a game, not playing a game for hours waiting for the 5 minute fun part.

@Asbestos_Underwear: Any trailer for any game shows you a smattering of the most enjoyable and enticing clips from the game. I have yet to see a trailer that just shows continuous gameplay. Your expectations seem to be ridiculous.

Additionally, in a game that is significantly about the user's ability to create things, he only needs to show you the basics. Building with Legos is fun. Watching someone build with Legos...not so much.

Wow... just one person? That's amazing. I never heard of it before seeing the clip but it looks phenomenal. Kinda makes me think of a mashup of LBP and Fallout 3, with a PoP art style.

@Unmazen: I wasn't really impressed by the graphics at first view. I'm no snob, and do appreciate simple, yet effective artwork and gameplay and what not, but it just didn't seem like anything some huge team of people would willingly put out or even something that a distributor would let through in this day in age (appealing to the idiot masses who like shiny objects).

Anyway, I'm instantly more appreciative of the style now knowing that it has been done by a single man. Very impressive indeed.
