Should I play Mario Kart Wii, the latest boring version of their MK franchise? Or SSBM, and get to have an entirely disconnected feeling as I combat 12 year olds around the globe, the closest one across the ocean? Is there any other game that I could actually enjoy online, instead of with my friends in my house?
There has never been any reason for me to buy VC titles, when I have owned anything from the VC channel I would want to play for the past 15 years now. And the stuff I want to play but don't have definitely isn't on the VC, so that is what my good friend emulator is for.
I have learned from my past mistakes (yeah, you, xbox360, psp), that upgrading firmware is usually a bad idea, because they will either take away something you like, or add a ton of shit you don't need.

I continued to play Megaman 2 and Muramasa for a while with no problems at all. It's unfortunate that this had to happen to others, though.

So, after years of playing to their fans, falling from 1st to 2nd, from 2nd to 3rd place, they release a console that appeals to a much wider demographic than the "hardcore/mature PS3/360" players, which is a surprise hit, and although it was the cheapest console for something like 4 years... they're greedy?
I... I'm not even sure it's worth the effort to insult you.

Anyway, I'm scared to update to 4.2 now. I don't want to send in my Wii and get my game data and downloaded titles erased.

Seriously tho, the Wii has time and time again been shown to be rife with glitches and security holes that are allowing hackers, for legitimate or otherwise purposes, to mod their systems. Personally, I load all my PURCHASED games on the hard drive (except for the multi-game compilation discs, which are problematic), and the load time benefits alone are enormous, not to mention the benefit of not having the optical drive in the Wii constantly running while I'm playing, which no doubt cuts down on wear as well as heat.
Nintendo is trying to fix the barn door after the horses got out, and doing a sloppy job at that if it's breaking modded and unmodded Wiis alike. Think I'll be sitting on the 4.1 update for a long, long time.

Partially responsible my ass. Kotaku didn't force you to install the Homebrew Channel with a gun pointed at your head. If you installed the Homebrew Channel, you did so on your own accord. Don't even try to pass some bullshit blame on Kotaku.

Your responsibility however is not a question at all. You were told by Kotaku and by Lifehacker in their article as well as the authors of homebrew, the authors of Gamma Loader and every other piece of unofficial software that no matter what the numbers or the science says... there is ALWAYS a chance you could mess something up or that the authors themselves might unintentionally release bugged software and that you, as the one making the decision to go ahead and try it out anyway, are the one responsible for that decision.
It is infuriating that someone who is a member of a video gaming community would even attempt this "Kotaku made me do it" reasoning.
Anyone can write code. Even if you live somewhere where it is illegal to do so. Anyone CAN write the code and in America it's free speech and protected. USING that code is a different story.
