I will buy this for the search function alone. I don't have the time to slog through whole novels for that one quote that is applicable to the paper I'm writing in reference to something else. And PDFs take up valuable gaming space on my computer.
I don't see myself toasting my feet in front of a fire with a glass of brandy and this, though. The screen, it burns.
You know why e-book readers are so damn big? Because if you could fit them in your pockets, the strain on that tiny text would make your eyes explode. This has bad idea written all over it. I tried reading an e-book on my iPhone...holy hell was that ever a tragic idea.
I think this is just a wonderful idea. Even though I'm somewhat partial to my PRS-505, I'm happy to see literature reaching the eyes of readers via non-traditional forms of distribution, particularly when the applicable audience is younger than would otherwise be interested in this type of material.
(Given the last sentence, it's quite a surprise this is even taking place...)
I'm actually kind of interested in this. I have this problem that every time I pick up a book I can't pay attention and my mind wanders yet I'm able to read off a screen just fine. I would like to at least try to be less of a dumbass when it comes to literature.
Hey, nifty. I didn't realize HarperCollins was involved. My wife's YA faerie novel comes out from HarperCollins on May 5 next year. They're a great company and it would be really cool to see some of their non-public-domain stuff on the DS.
@Hoagie_one: Well, you know--I hear there's this newfangled invention called paper that's incredibly easy on the eyes, and capable of producing life-like and matchless resolution.
...
I kid, I kid. I agree that a DS is a less-than-ideal reader; its miniscule LCD size and poor resolution would make it absolute hell for engaging in any serious reading.
I am so excited about this. I wonder if they'll screw with region coding the title so us Americans can't get our hands on it? If we can use it, I am sold.
The DS with its dual screens is ideal for this. At least you could hold it like a book, as you burn your eyeballs out of your head trying to read classic literature.
It's good with a PSP (homebrew apps) or an iPod touch (I use Stanza from the App Store) because you can see the remaining battery level and it's quite generous for reading books.
On the DS... I guess the light would turn red and you could bookmark it in the moments before it shuts off...
Yes. I have a black DS Lite that has a flaky left trigger and often crashes if I put it to sleep, and a more reliable black/crimson Lite. Sometimes I've spent the last 5 minutes of a game going "oh crap! It turned red!" trying to get to a point where I could save before it shuts off on me. Luckily most games are pretty free with saving, but the last minute warning isn't always enough.
IMO there's no excuse for not being able to check the remaining battery - even if I had to do it at the home screen without a game. Ok/Not ok isn't enough these days. Any handheld, phone, or MP3 player will at least give you a three bar battery indicator, usually more now.
There is a battery icon, but mine has never read anything other than fully green, whether it's freshly charged, or played for 10 hours. In that sense it's less a battery level indicator, and more a battery indicator. ("Battery = yes")
I guess it probably turns red when the LED does, but that doesn't say anything for what the level is.
Thanks, lol... the warranty is long gone, but regardless, the battery thing is a design issue, not a defect. The black unit is currently halfway swapped into a crystal clear case that... doesn't actually fit DS parts - or even the buttons it came with, so I'd have to back it out and reassemble it first.
(BTW... the crimson unit's screen doesn't have multiple layers of pressure sensitivity... not that it matters if you don't use the homebrew "Colors" program... the buttons work fine though, and it only crashes when sleeping around 10-20% of the time.)

This will be a lot easier then taking the books out from the library.

No George Orwell, even though I KNOW Animal Farm, at the very least, is public domain?

also, being able to read books on mai DS would be sick, cause that amazon e-reader thing is too damn expensive
