While I understand that third party games don't sell well on the Wii, all the EA games mentioned in this article are crap. Nobody wants a watered down, shit graphics version of a 360/PS3 game.
If EA made well developed, compelling games I think they could sell. Capcom seems to be doing well on Wii, so it can be done.
Just curious but wasn't EA Montreal one of those on the list that was downsizing? I mean this makes sense.
Also now it makes sense that most ips that they said they were cancelling were just ips for the Wii. (considering they seem to have kept the project a and x or whatever they were called from pandemic).
Still how bad was that new NFS for the wii (for anyone who's played it)? I mean I would've stated how good was it but it looked pretty bad from the videos that I saw.
@rich8606: Even Reg admitted that you had to sell a million copies to make a profit worth talking about on the Wii and that only 16 titles had sold 1 million plus sales and ten of those were ninty titles. Admittedly this was before NSMB but that hardly changes anything.
@Bleemo: I don't get why this developers keep trying. It's not that kind of console... real "gamers" whose childhood is filled with NES, SNES, N64 and GC got Wii cuz they want to play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, you know.... Nintendo family's games. But these people are in the minority.
Majority of Wii owners, people who bought a Wii as their first console since birth cuz it's the hip thing to own and dare call themselves "gamers"? They don't play Mario Galaxy, they don't own games other Wii Sports and Raving Rabbids, they play them for half an hour on parties.
@Pretty Pink Pwnie: And yet most people own SD televisions...EA are bleeding money right left and centre anyway. Anyone who refers to themselves as a 'hardcore gamer' or dismisses a group as 'casuals' is being a moron anyway. There are two types of games, good and bad. Some 'casual' games are nothing short of brilliant, likewise some 'hardcore games' should have been abandoned at the concept stage. If you really think 'casual gaming' is going anywhere you're naive, and I'd start looking at the money being pumped into facebook style games as a potential sign of just how willing people are to spend on these games. Why is seeing a company abandon a console great anyway? Are you really that stupidly attached to one machine that you can't cope with a company making games for another machine? There's enough variety out there for anyone but the most elitist of idiots. What's worse is people just seem to dismiss the idea of games for kids these days, and get personally offended by their existence. GOD FORBID that a child want's to pick up a video game. And of course everything has to be in HD, and every old game is utter rubbish due to not being in HD.
@Pretty Pink Pwnie: I think you're in the wrong place... classifying gamers casual/hardcore is SO 2006. Most of us have moved on from that dated and inaccurate division.
And any development house making less games for less platforms is NEVER good. How soon til all of those developers are out on their ass? Disturbance in the workforce anyone?
I'm not a big fan of the handheld platforms, but I would never say that just because I don't like them or play them that they have any less validity in the games marketplace.
@Gnarkiller: The few people you know who owns Wiis that sit in the corner and collect dust are not the Wii owners you will meet here. They are a small minority of the people I know, but then I tend to hang out with gamers. Trendy, latest-thing people are rarely serious gamers, and as such, shouldn't really be representative of what the average Wii user is like.
@Fluorine: I disagree with that last statement I know loads of people who own Wii's that were previously fans of Nintendo and they are not happy with the box.
I personally own one due to it being in my price range at launch and the games being a shade cheaper. But to be honest I have tried really hard to like it but it's hard when my two favourite games for the thing are old ports i.e. Resident evil 4 and archives. As fun as house of dead and umbrella chronicles are they are not classics. Then after that you're talking a couple of Nintendo games (which is irrelevant to 3rd party devs) and old games on the VC which are a blast but hardly the basis for a current console.
and to prove I am not some Nintendo hater I love the DS and loved the NES and SNES.
@Bleemo: See, that's kewl. You tried the Wii, you don't like it. That's fine, there's nothing wrong with that.
It's when someone takes the attitude that since they don't like it, then the platform should just go away and die, or people shouldn't develop for it anymore that is retarded.
I wonder if companies ever consider it a downside to have their coders working with old hardware. Rather than learning to use multiple cores more efficiently and dealing with the latest GPU architectures, they're programming for something using 5-7 year old technology. That's a much larger gap to bridge and they'll have to play catch up when they receive the next generation of console SDKs compared to people who have been working with the Cell and Xenon for 6+ years.
Nintendo needs to be very careful how it proceeds in the future. They're currently not really establishing a younger fanbase. Their only core market is people who grew up with the NES/SNES. As much as they love casuals they aren't consistent customers. If they want to establish a core fan base for the future they're going to need to start getting a decent online infrastructure, and some more mature block buster titles. Do you think kids would rather play MW2 or NSMBW? They need to start getting big title third party support on a powerful console. They may think that they have the market cornered, but it's slipping away from them.
@Gunstarlegends: That's an interesting point, but I think you might be selling NSMBW short on how many kids actually would rather play it. I know of many who aren't at all interested in shooters or violence.
@Gunstarlegends: I know about 26 people who would rather play NSMBW than MW2. About 12 of them are too young to play MW2, and by the time they are old enough, it'll be about as exciting as playing Rise of the Triad, while SMB will always be fun.
@WontonTiger: No I don't live in Utah, but neither are all of my friends and aquaintances 17 year old mooks. Lots of them are couples who don't like to spend the evening shooting people in the face.
And some kids DO play MW, but the kids I'm speaking about don't. They simply aren't interested in it. They'd rather kill their friends with a turtleshell then with an AK-47.
For a while, EA was at least making a token effort at migrating big-name franchises over to the Wii. Wasn't there a cartoony Wii edition of Need for Speed in the works? Both that and the Burnout franchise could adapt to the Mario Kart-style controls without too much difficulty, albeit in graphically-inferior incarnations.
As much as I like the Wii, if they make it a bit more powerful, they can run a version of The Sims 2 or 3 that is pretty much similar to the one on the PC. That way EA would really be making money.
I am really dissapointed when finding out the Xbox and PS2 version of The Sims 2 removed one of my favourite features of the PC version: genetics that get passed to the sims' children. I love making the ugliest couple possible than seeing how their baby grow up to look. The have him/her have a kid with an alien...
@Rena Lanford:
The Sims 2, yes, but the load time is already horrible on the PC version, even on my dual-core with 2 GB RAM (far above the recommended system when it was first released).
As for The Sims 3, while it can run on an Intel graphics chip, the fact that the entire game is played on one giant seamless map can be a problem.
@syafiqjabar of Mars: The way to develop for the Wii is to program most of the work to be done by the GPU. Most developers have gotten into the habit of dumping everything onto the CPU because the 360 and PS3 have insane powerful CPUs. The Wii has a shit CPU but the GPU is actually amazingly versatile and can handle quite a lot. Developers like Nintendo and High Voltage Studios (The Conduit) understand this and that is why their games are some of the best looking.
@Dresan: But you know that if No More Heroes came out for 360/PS3, it would've probably sold 10x more, right? There's honestly no reason for 3rd parties to make AAA Wii titles anymore.
This could be attributed to the "ignorant gamer" phenomenon. What is the "ignorant gamer" you may ask? It is a theory developed by me in just a few minutes. Due to the influx of new casual gamers who have barely played videogames, they do not care for franchises they've never heard of. Furthermore they are unwilling to try games if the Nintendo logo is not present for fear of it not being "fun". Also their casual time does not allow them to purchase hardcore games like No more Heroes, Dead Space, and Mad World. The best thing to do is not to develop for the Wii if you're a third party developer.

@Goldwings 2.0: This is not true at all. Muramasa, Onechanbara, Tons of Shopping channel stuff like World of Goo. I DO have Nintendo games, but why not? They are good, but hardly them or nothing.
@bradleyglisson: i own all the consoles. I'm a gamer, so let me get that out of the way.
the wii is embarrassing. It's controls are shit for most non-1st party games. Even the waggle in the 1st party games is semi-lame for the most part. The only good titles for the most part are made by Nintendo. The other awesome games didn't sell well, which proves the install base for the Wii is non-existent. It doesn't have an install base - it has a base of people who bought something they think is awesome, and only play it for wii sports.
No More Heroes, Okami, and games like that didn't sell well, and if you ask me, they're ART.
Unfortunately, you can get games of that caliber almost on a consistent basis with the PS3/Xbox. Hell, if I was a developer I wouldn't waste a cent developing on the wii. The future of gaming lies in the other consoles. You can do SO MUCH MORE on EVERY other system than you can with the wii. Hell, the wii won't even remember my credit card number. how much of a child do they think I am?!
@enderx: This is the problem with purposely going out and attempting to cater to the "casual gamer". The problem with casual gamers is that they do not buy games. They buy whatever they think will entertain their family for the next six months. If that's a Wii one Christmas, then it's a Wii. Next time it's one of the kids' birthdays, it might be some sort of Elmo doll. Next Christmas, maybe it's a Hess truck. Hell, I dunno. But there is no consistent drive to continuously buy video games to play on the thing that you sort of wanted a year ago because everybody else you knew did and your kids were asking for it before they moved onto something else.
There's a reason why Sony and MS try to satisfy a more hardcore crowd: they're the ones that actually buy all the games.
Also, Nintendo has a real problem in that they're not hooking in new players, ie. kids. I would be surprised if the people buying all the Mario and Zelda games these days weren't in their 30's. What does Nintendo have that an average young teenager who didn't grow up on Mario is going to think of as cool? It would actually surprise me if Sony's and MS's gamers weren't *younger* than Nintendo's, which means they're going to stick around buying games longer before their life gets too busy or they get old and jaded and decide modern games all suck.
@badasscat: I think the other problem is that nintendo doesn't really know how to make games for gamers anymore. Sorry, but when the answer to satisfy the 'hardcore gamer' by Myomoto is Animal Crossing, *something* is just not right.
@karoc: The future isn't motion controls. There are maybe a HANDFUL of games that utilize motion control reasonably well, and now nintendo wants to charge me 20 more dollars to make the Wii do what it was supposed to do at launch! And for the record, I've already stated this - but I own all the consoles. I'm a gamer. Every great game on the Wii I have. Same with other systems. And yes, Okami sold more on the wii - yet not enough apparently, because one of the best gaming experiences ever is being missed by the majority of the people who own a wii - because they're not gamers. They're people that want to play Wii Sports. hell, when I go to my mother's place for a daytrip, she always always always makes me bring out wii sports, and nothing else. The wii going HD isn't the solution, as graphics have little to do with it. the wii getting hardware to make great games on a consistent basis without having to hold the developers hands is. Apparently the only people capable of making a great video game on ANY Nintendo system has always been pretty much only Nintendo.. (though I will say this, if they'd port RE5 to the Wii, I'd be happy with that. I LOVE some of the games on the wii, don't get me wrong. No need to take this all personal. ... but my point right here is that RE4 ported on the Wii was one of the best gaming experiences ever. Metroid Prime sucked.)
Some art-quality games on the 360/ps3? You don't know of any? Do you even own the systems??
Their 1st party softwares are too good that the customers felt that they should only by 1st-party softwares and thus couldn't care less about 3rd parties anymore.
Yeah I know it's not their fault.
Their hardwares (Wii and Mac) may be selling like crazy but if they are the only one who can produce softwares that sell on their own machines, eventually nobody will make a software for them.
@FamiCube64: That's not cool man. EA has really improved on their image making some unique games this generation.
Without them we're going to be over-run with plastics and Guitar Heroes from Activision.
@FamiCube64: Yeah, and I wish EA would take Mass Effect, Dead Space, Dante's Inferno, Dragon Age Origins, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield Bad Company, Beatles Rockband, and their other crappy games with them! *cough sarcasm*
