This is the stage where guilds from other games who signed up for beta as a whole will gain access to the game en masse in order to test out the newly implemented guild and heraldry features, as well as the individual servers' capacity for drama.

“WAR’s Guild Beta is here and some of the world’s most experienced MMO players will now get a chance to play one of the most anticipated MMOs of all time,” said Mark Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “We look forward to seeing them beat, bash and burn their way through the world that we have created for their enjoyment. It’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s going to be glorious!”

The WoW guild I was in when we signed up for the Warhammer beta has long since dissolved, reformed, dissolved again, and split up into a series of tiny, ineffectual guilds with no hope of ever accomplishing anything. Such is the way of all things.

<![CDATA[ EA Mythic's Barnett on Why He Doesn't Hit GDC ]]>

A few months ago, Kieron Gillen sat down with Paul Barnett, EA Mythic's Creative Director, and has been posting bits and pieces of that interview session ever since; this week, we were treated to one of the best cynical descriptions of GDC ever. Barnett explains why, despite being asked to go, he declined the chance to go to GDC and went to the LIFT futurism festival instead:

I never go to GDC. But I was asked point blank why, as it seemed this year they were quite happy to take me to GDC. Mythic wanted me to go there. And I effectively said “Well, I don’t like GDC”. Which turned out to be the wrong thing to say. Apparently I’ve now learned that if you’re in the games industry, and someone says “GDC” what you’re supposed to do is say lots and lots of lovely things about how wonderful they are.

I went for it from the other point of view - I’m not going to GDC because it’s combative, it’s a peacock display and it’s full of people who do what I do or want to do what I do or are doing what I do and don’t want me to do it anymore. It’s not open-minded. It’s very narrow-minded. We’re all talking about the same thing. We’ve all sharpened our knives for years at it, so we get into… well, not a fight, but it’s always about the same things. We talk about design, mechanics, philosophy of design. All I was going to hear about was: WoW and the Activision merger. Whether Spore is going to be any good. How do I get into the games industry? Would you like a job? You’re going to be fired. Why don’t you start a label? I can get you a lot of money? There’s no money available in the market. What we need to do is form an independent development company. What we need to do is unionise. Is microtransactions really the way? What do you think of INSERT WHATEVER IDEA WAS.

The rest of the interview set currently posted is pretty interesting, and it's worth a read through — and not just for the scathing commentary on one of the premier events in the gaming world.

<![CDATA[ Australia And Friends Added To Warhammer Online Launch ]]> The worldwide launch for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning just got a bit more worldwide. Recognizing the legion of Warhammer fans in Australia and New Zealand, the two countries along with Southeast Asia will bet getting the game the same time those of us in Europe and North America do, complete with their own servers so they don't have to mingle with dirty Americans. EA Mythic VP Mark Jacobs breaks out 'down under' so I don't have to.

"Warhammer is a world-wide franchise with a strong following in Australia and New Zealand. By placing our own server down under and running customer service out of EA Mythic, we can ensure that when we launch WAR, Oceanic players will experience the same quality of game play and customer service as North American players"
While players in the region will still have the option of connecting to North American servers, I'm hoping they stay on their own side to keep them from propagating their drop bear propaganda. I made a special spiky hat, you lying bastards!

<![CDATA[ World Of Warcraft Makes MMO Making Easier ]]> mmohelper.jpg Here's a rather interesting viewpoint on World of Warcraft's MMO genre dominance. Rather than seeing the Blizzard game's dominance as a detriment to new games, EA Mythic's senior designer Josh Drescher suggest that it actually makes developing a new MMO easier.
"If you actually look at the MMO-sphere right now, that is since WoW launched, the vast percentage of MMOs that launched after it have been successful," Drescher explained. "Obviously no one has eclipsed the 10 million subscriber number, but there have been numerous titles that have come out on different platforms and multiple genres all over the world that have been far more successful than MMOs had been previously."
It's an amazing bit of insight that I hadn't taken into account before. Millions of people are now ready for massively multiplayer games, whereas before World of Warcraft the market was a great deal smaller. While WoW still controls a massive chunk of the market, it's a bigger market than ever before. My girlfriend, who was never much of a gamer before WoW is now looking at Age of Conan and Lord of the Rings Online...living proof of the point.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online On The March ]]> You know, I think this is the first time I've actually seen Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning in motion? You'd have thought I would have caught site of it at an event or something, but nope. Now that I search back a bit, I did find this cam footage from back in 2006, but it hardly compares to this video, created by the content creation team for the game using closed beta footage. It looks...well, it looks like an MMO, make no mistake. A very stylized one at that, which isn't a bad thing. The whole thing comes off as a bit stiff, but MMO videos hardly ever live up to the real thing in motion. I'm just glad I got through this entire post without saying World of Warcraft. <![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Falls To Autumn ]]> Push it back, push it back, waaaaaay back! It helps if you imagine Warhammer orcs in cheerleader outfits, though that might just be me. Speaking during a press conference today in Paris, producer Jeff Hickman revealed that Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning isn't quite ready for the 2nd quarter release they were aiming for when they delayed the game the last time. The new target date for the ambitious MMO is sometime this fall. Considering the pace they've been keeping up so far, I wouldn't be surprised if the game wound up being a Christmas release. Just remember, it isn't a delay - it's an extended development cycle.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Concept Art Aplenty ]]> The team handling press for EA Mythic's upcoming Warhammer: Age of Reckoning MMORPG don't believe in information trickling. Every month we get a fresh blast of concept art, screens, and information in one huge chunk. Rather than split them up or simply toss them all together into one large gallery, I went ahead and split them up into easily digestible nuggets. This month we get information and screens on two character classes: The Sorcerer / Sorceress and the Disciple of Kaine, as well as renders of the elven zone of Ellyrion, some renders from the next cinematic trailer, and concept art featuring the taverns and RVR keeps in the game. First up is the Sorcerers, Dark Elven magic users who utilize the powers of their will to harness incredible dark magics, though building up too much power can cause the magic to turn on the player, leaving them vulnerable to attack.

Next comes the Disciples of Kaine, an evil class that combines the close-up, dagger style of the classic rogue with the dark rites of Kaine, stealing their foes essence and offering it to their god in exchange for power. Sort of a mage thief, from the information provided. Sounds absolutely splendid.

Then we have the High Elven land of Ellyrion.

The vast, rolling plains and mild climate of Ellyrion make this inner kingdom the perfect breeding ground for the finest Elven steeds in all of Ulthuan. Great herds of these amazingly swift and graceful creatures roam the grasslands throughout the year, and are prized among the noble lords of the Phoenix King's court for their magnificent quality and majestic beauty.

And a look at the various taverns serving as home bases across the lands in the game...

Realm versus realm keeps factor heavily into the gigantic, ongoing RVR combat that the game hopes will draw in PVP players in droves.

And finally a quick trio of renders from the next cinematic trailer, coming soon to video game website near you, doubtlessly joined by another several dozen bits of concept art.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Elf Mania ]]> The Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning team have gone elf crazy this month, releasing a slew of elven assets covering elves both Dark and High, their gear, their banners, and pictures of them dressed up as particular classes, including the Witch Elves and Swordmasters. If you look closely through the gallery below you'll also find pics of the bow-wielding Shadow Warrior, whose very name strikes fear in the hearts of...shadows, I suppose. Spooky. Not that I don't appreciate concept art, but can we get some nice, meaty screenshots next time? The elves can even be clothed, if you wish.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Delayed ]]> warhammeronline.jpgIn the latest State of the Game article for Warhammer Online, General Manager of EA Mythic Mark Jacobs reveals that the game, once slated for sometime in February of next year, has been delayed until the 2nd quarter of 2008. Wait - not delayed - the development cycle has just been extended. Phew! Had me worried there for a bit.
As many of you may have heard, we have extended WAR's development cycle until the 2nd quarter of 2008. The reason is simple; we will not release Warhammer Online until it is the game we set out to create two years ago.
After the last stage of beta testing the decided to invest more time into polishing their Realm Vs. Realm combat system, as well as adding in additional features for your enjoyment. Vague, sure, but Jacobs did at least address the EA layoffs, stating that while they did affect his team, they did not affect the game's development.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Elves Invade Leipzig ]]> warelf.jpgIf you've been following the development of Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning as closely as I have, you've only got one question on your mind. EA Mythic knows what we want, and they'll be showing them off at the Leipzig Games Convention next week. Elves both Dark and High will be revealed at a special press conference on August 22nd at the GOA booth, where conventioneers will be able to go hands-on with WAR's RvR gameplay, new starting zones, and a host of as of yet unseen content and features.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Careers - Witch Hunter ]]> The latest Warhammer Online career profile takes a break from battling Magneto and performing on Broadway to reprise his role as Van Helsing. The Witch Hunter is a class dedicated to stomping out corruption in the land while looking stylish. The utilize guns, swords, and holy gadgets in their never-ending war against evil. Seriously, just go watch Van Helsing featuring Hugh Jackman. Then come back and check out the artwork and career profile below. Same guy.

Also more than likely what you'll find me playing once the game is launched. I'm a sucker for floppy hats and coats that catch the wind dramatically.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Career Profile - Empire Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter

These poor, simple folk - too fearful or too dull-witted to see the vulgarity and evil in their own midst. They wail and complain about my... uncompromising methods, but who among you can say that hanging half a village is too high a price to pay for the assurance that corruption has been exposed and destroyed this day?

- Ernst Traugott, Templar Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter is a tireless foe of Chaos, dark magic and witchery of all kinds. As the taint of Chaos continues to spread and more people are drawn to the dark arts, the Witch Hunters' role has become increasingly important to the Empire. Fast, cunning and deadly, they dispense merciless judgment upon any who serve Chaos. While the people of the Empire agree that the Witch Hunters' work is critically important, rare is the citizen who does not feel pangs of dread when they lay eyes upon one, for it is understood that most Witch Hunters would sooner burn an entire village to the ground than see a single follower of Chaos go free.

Witch Hunter Specialty
The Witch Hunter's sole motivation is rooting out and destroying corruption. To that end, they use the various tools and tactics available to them to weaken their opponents' strength and resolve via Interrogation before meting out final Judgment. Fast and agile, the Witch Hunter is dangerous in close-quarters, especially when approaching an unsuspecting or startled target from behind. The Witch Hunter will frequently employ holy water, chrisoms, blessed ashes and other relics to further increase the suffering inflicted upon their foes.

Playing as a Witch Hunter
Whether you're positioning yourself for a devastating strike against an unwary enemy or going toe-to-toe in the thick of the fight, there are few places on the battlefield where a Witch Hunter does not belong. In the face of your tireless assaults and interrogation, your enemies quickly wither and fall - be it by blade, bullet or torch. While your pistol can be a powerful and devastating weapon under the right circumstances, it is slow and awkward to reload in close-quarters. As such, you will make frequent use of the deadly speed and effectiveness of rapiers, knives, stakes, torches and daggers. You will also find it useful to anoint your weapons before a fight to dispatch your unholy enemies with even greater efficiency.

Fighting the Witch Hunter
The Witch Hunter relies heavily on his ability catch targets off guard or to distract them in the thick of a fight. A powerful melee fighter, he is at his most effective when he can move behind an enemy and unleash pistol shots or powerful strikes from his anointed blade upon them. As such, it is critical that you not lose track of a Witch Hunter in the heat of battle. Keep them at range if you can - as their pistols are unreliable from a distance - and stay in front of them if they close in on you. A bullet in the head or a blade through the heart await those who do not.

The Witch Hunter Look

<![CDATA[ Beta Watch: Warhammer Online ]]> Time to earn those Warhammer bragging rights. EA Mythic has launched the signup page for the closed beta phase of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning in Europe and North America. Slots are sure to be extremely limited, and with the buzz surrounding the game I'd say the competition will be massive.

Having said that, here are a few tips for getting selected for an invite-only closed beta:

1. Research the game's theme and appear passionate about it, without sounding like a fanboy. Harder than it seems.
2. Say things like, "I believe that this game could be the next big MMO sensation, and want to have a part in helping it succeed."
3. Sign up as a female.

Play your cards right, and two years down the road you could be the guy who keeps saying, "Well I've been playing since closed beta," becoming that which you hate most.

<![CDATA[ Gallery: Warhammer Online Warrior Priests ]]> EA Mythic wants you to know how much work they are putting into developing each individual character class for the upcoming Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. First they feature the Chaos Zealot in a batch of concept art, and now a full-blown gallery of screenshots and concepts spanning 17 images for the Empire's Warrior Priest career.

I love armored priests. One of the main things I think EQ does better than WoW is allow their healers to wear plate mail instead of confining them to frilly dresses. Warhammer not only allows plate mail and skirts, Warrior Priests can dual wield hammers. Hell. Yeah.

<![CDATA[ Gallery: Warhammer Online Concept Art ]]> EA Mythic has unleashed a slew of new Warhammer Online concept art on an unsuspecting public. The art depicts monsters, some buildings and landscapes, and the creepy concept design drawing for the Chaos Zealot profession, the main healing and buffing profession for the minions of Chaos, who seek to recover the seven chaos emeralds before Sonic in order to enslave the world, or else I'm getting my games mixed up again.

<![CDATA[ Free DAoC Catacombs Upgrade ]]>

Good news for lapsed Dark Age of Camelot fans, while perhaps not-so-good news for longtime subscribers, EA Mythic has announced that from henceforth the Catacombs expansion to the long-running MMORPG game shall be available as a free download. An expansion pack that introduced upgraded graphics, new cities, and new character classes, players previously had to pay $20 to access the new and improved content. More than likely a move to make sure everyone is on the same page graphically for future expansions and the like.

Good news for me, since I stopped playing DAOC right before this got released back in December 2004, so I never got to try out the heretic, vampire, bainshee, warlock, or valkyrie, despite being relatively sure I'd be the prettiest valkyrie ever. Might be time for me to poke around there a bit and see what I've been missing.

EA MYTHIC UPGRADES ALL PLAYERS TO "CATACOMBS(TM)" FOR FREE

EA Mythic today announced that "Catacombs(TM)," the fifth expansion for the critically-acclaimed MMO "Dark Age of Camelot(R)," is available to all current and retired players as a free download. All accounts have been granted access to the expansion content.

The "Catacombs" expansion introduces improved graphics, five new character classes, three massive underground cities, and instanced dungeons to the world of Camelot. Players can download the "Catacombs" files at http://catacombs.darkageofcamelot.com/downloads.php. Former players returning to the game can re-activate their account, regain their original characters and take advantage of the online availability of the expansion.
