<![CDATA[Koei Makes Subsidiary In Vietnam]]> Best know for the hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors, Koei is setting up a Koei branch in Hanoi, Vietnam.

According to Koei, the sudden jump in development costs has lead the company to look for ways to be profitable. Enter this Vietnamese studio with aims to optimize efficiency and productivity for Koei — all at lower costs.

The reason for picking Vietnam is that the country not only has the infrastructure but also a familiarity with Japanese pop culture.

There are other game-themed plastic, but not necessarily ones that make you want to swing them around and slay baddies.

<![CDATA[Koei Tecmo Working On Corporate Cross Over Game]]> Japanese game makers Koei and Tecmo have merged, officially forming Koei Tecmo Holdings as of this April. But does that mean their games will merge as well?

According to the summer issue of industry publication Nikkei Corporate Information: "Tecmo and Koei are combining titles to launch a new game. The aim is to bring in fans of both."

There is no information about possible titles or a release window.

While Tecmo's most popular franchises are action game Ninja Gaiden and fighter Dead or Alive, Koei is best known for its hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors series.

Koei does have experience with cross-branding: Back in 2007, it developed Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, which featured the Namco Bandai's popular mecha. Dynasty Warriors: Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, anyone?

<![CDATA[The Art Of War Vs. Dynasty Warriors]]> One of the Chris-es over at Hardcasual passes along this little bit of brilliance, which compares the teachings of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to the teachings of Koei's Dynasty Warriors.

So how does the Chinese history-delving hack and slash action series hold up in the face of Sun Tzu's immensely influential book of military strategy? There are several parallels, and several not-so-parallels.

“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys. Look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death!”
Regard your soldiers as competition. On rare occasions, they will steal kills from you.

See? Almost exactly the same! Hit the link below for several other excellent examples of Sun Tzu's teachings put nearly to use in Dynasty Warriors.

Above, she tackles the IKARUGA theme for the first level, "Ideal." Think about that: This person liked IKARUGA enough to do a version on a recorder. So cool.

Might want to turn down the volume on your computer as YouTube's sound quality is rather shrill. Hit the jump for her renditions of Takeshi no Chousenjou, Mega-Man 3 and Dynasty Warriors 3. Keep the comments clean. Or else.

<![CDATA[Koei Wants More Western Gamer Love]]> Koei is thinking about you Western gaming people! For a while now, the Dynasty Warriors has been trying look outside Japan and morph into a more international company. Admirable! Koei exec Naoki Katashima hopes to make that happen. He's just been promoted to VP of Koei UK, Koei France and Koei North America — all very different markets. Says Katashima:

This new mid-term plan is a very significant development for Koei... The plan demonstrates our renewed commitment to our western businesses and the importance with which Koei views the markets outside of Japan. This plan establishes an entirely new division that unifies all of Koei's western territories, and represents a substantial part of the company overall... Now more than ever, Koei's development studios, and sales and marketing teams around the world are working more closely together to develop remarkable entertainment experiences for video gamers across the globe.

It's always nice to see companies try to grow. Hopefully, this new plan will consist of less Dynasty Warriors and more other stuff.

<![CDATA[Dynasty Warriors Remade as Dirty Movie]]> Three things that Dynasty Warriors the game has in common with Cosplay Musou: Fancy costumes, third person point-of-view and repetitive scenes. Well that, and players say both relieve stress. This adult film stars Aika Miyazaki, Ai Katsuki, Rika Nagasawa and newcomer Tomoka Nozawa. Yes, that was a pun, a very embarrassing pun.

<![CDATA[Dynasty Warriors 6 Hands-on Impressions]]> As one would guess, any title marked as the sixth in a series probably isn't going to offer a whole new ballgame, despite Dynasty Warriors 6 adding swimming, climbing and destroying walls to the well-worn mix. In the demo level no swimming was to be had, but I did get to break a wall, which was sort of not that thrilling. Killing hundreds of guys with a combo that stretched across most of the stage was fairly engaging, on the other hand—but aside from the endlessness of the combo, that's the series' admittedly formulaic bread and butter in the first place. Graphics-wise, it's definitely easy on the eyes, even if it's not the prettiest game out there (I played the 360 version, for the record). Overall, it's fun—definitely familiar, but definitely fun.

<![CDATA[Warriors Orochi Trailer]]> Nobody has done more for the beating up hundreds of people at a time genre than Koei, and it's all coming to a head. 48 dynasty warriors meet 28 samurai warriors in Warriors Orochi for the Xbox 360 and PS3, due out this September. It features 3 character tag-team fighting and four original storylines, but I don't care. But Dynasty Warriors: Gundam...well that's completely different, now isn't it? It's a Dynasty Warriors game, and I never said I wouldn't buy another of those. Just trying to figure out if I should get this one or wait for the inevitable DW: Gundam Xtreme. Honestly still confused as to how I went from dreading a game to bitching about it not coming out for another two months in such a short period of time.

This latest batch of screenshots focuses on giant robots fighting each other, as did their Gundam video game screenshot ancestors before them.

<![CDATA[Gundam Musou Sets PS3 Sales Record]]>

Take a culture institution like Gundam and sprinkle the hugely popular Dynasty Warriors. What do you get? Over a 100,000 copies of Gundam Musou sold. That makes the game the first PS3 title to sell over 100k on its first day according to the Game Tsutaya Blog. What's more, Japanese blog Shinobi no Enmachou reports that the game sold about 70 percent of its 170,000-180,000 launch day shipments, making it the 3rd ranked PS3 in overall sales — Ridge Racer 7 is number one at 130,000 total sales and Gundam: Target In Sight is close behind at 120,000. Word has it that this title was not enough to create a significant bump in PS3 sales as most copies were sold individually and not with consoles.

<![CDATA[Clip: Another PS3 Gundam Game]]> After the last Gundam PS3 game I purchased, you couldn't sell me another Gundam game if you infected me with bird flu and sealed the antidote inside the game case, but I'm sure those of you who enjoyed the last one might get a kick out of this footage of Gundam Musou for the PS3.

Well at least it looks like a next-gen title this time. And the cut scenes look pretty tight. Gameplay looks kind of like a Dynasty Warrior clone using giant robots. Hordes of giant...shiny...robots.

Okay, I'll buy the damn thing if it comes to the states, but if it sucks I am never buying another Gundam game again until the next one comes out.

<![CDATA[Gundam Dynasty Warriors Style For PS3]]>

For those still with the bad taste of Gundam: Crossfire for the PS3 in their mouths, guess what? There's another PS3 Gundam game on the way. And after that, there will be another and another and another after that! The console's first effort was shoddy— Insert Credit's Ollie calls it one of the worse Gundam games ever made. But! Fret not! Bandai Namco look like they've got something interesting in store. Next year, the 3D Gundam Musou will hit the PS3. In short, it's literally Koei's San Goku Musou (Dynasty Warriors in the West) for Gundam. Koei and Bandai-Namco have teamed up because, even if this game is utter rubbish, San Goku plus Gundam equals Japanese smash hit.

<![CDATA[Koei's E3 Line-Up Revealed]]> The house that Dynasty Warriors built released its preliminary list of what will be available (but not necessarily playable) on the E3 show floor. Few surprises here, as Koei announced both Fatal Inertia and Blade Storm for the PS3 many moons ago, and as the line-up is dominated by tried and true Samurai/Dynasty Warriors titles.

Obviously, the most exciting thing on the list is the Gitaroo Man port, which I will be playing all day Friday until security pries my claws from the analog nub.

PlayStation 3: Fatal Inertia, Blade Storm: Hundred Years War

Xbox 360: Samurai Warriors 2

PlayStation 2: Samurai Warriors 2

PSP: Gitaroo Man Lives!, Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2

Nintendo DS: Dynasty Warriors DS

PC: Uncharted Waters Online, Dynasty Warriors BB
