Perruchon didn't own a PS3 until the cheaper and slimmer model hit and had been spending the last few years playing his Xbox 360. The PS3 reminded him how much he liked the DualShock design, which inspired this table.

No word whether this will actually go into production, Perruchon's DualShock table uses controllers to buttress glass surfaces. The design is for the black DualShock and the white one. Another concept image below.

<![CDATA[Happy 10th Birthday, DualShock]]> Ten years ago this week, the DualShock controller was first released. Sure, it wasn't the first controller to feature rumble, nor was it the first to feature analogue sticks, but what it lacked in innovation it's more than made up for in perseverance. After all, how many control pad designs make it to their second hardware generation, let alone - albeit belatedly - a third?

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA INTRODUCES METAL GEAR SOLID®4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS PS3 BUNDLE AVAILABLE IN LATE Q2 2008 IN NORTH AMERICA
Company Also Announces Limited-Edition God of War® PSP® Entertainment Pack and April Availability of DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller for North America

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., February 26, 2008 - At its annual retail and publisher conference Destination PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced details of upcoming PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) (PSP-2000) hardware bundles with two of the most highly anticipated 2008 titles. The company also announced the April 2008 availability of DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller in North America.

To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3 bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499 (MSRP).

SCEA also announced the June 2008 availability of the limited-edition God of War® PSP Entertainment Pack for $199.99 (MSRP). The God of War Entertainment Pack will include a "Deep Red" PSP with God of War himself, Kratos, silk-screened on the back of the unit, a copy of the highly anticipated upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus game for PSP, the hit comedy movie from Columbia Pictures, "Superbad™," on UMD™ (Universal Media Disc), and a PLAYSTATION®Network voucher to download Syphon Filter®: Combat Ops from PLAYSTATION®Store. The stand-alone version of God of War: Chains of Olympus launches on March 4, 2008.

"Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal way to offer that continued value to our consumers," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall."

SCEA will introduce the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for the first time in North America in April 2008 for $54.95 (MSRP). DUALSHOCK 3, which incorporates both rumble and motion sensing SIXAXIS™ technologies, maintains the award-winning design and precise, responsive features of PlayStation controllers. The added rumble feature, combined with the SIXAXIS system, enhances the gamer experience with more interactive, intuitive and immersive game play experience and will work with more than 100 current PS3 titles.

In additional news coming from Destination PlayStation, SCEA announced Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots will be available in North America in late Q2 2008. A Metal Gear Online "Starter Pack" will also be launched to support online game play. Gamers can select a single player experience or take the action online with up to 16 players and battle it out using the latest weapons and stealth techniques. For those eager to take on Solid Snake's nemesis, Liquid Ocelot, a nationwide pre-sell promotion will enable gamers to pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and be guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.

<![CDATA[XFPS Rate Up Adapter Is Available For PS3]]> While the PS3 is already pretty friendly to most mouse and keyboard setups, the XFPS Rate Up Adapter (formerly just for the Xbox 360) is a peripheral that allows you to remap SIXAXIS controls to your stubborn PC ways of old and control any game as you would a computer title. It's completely plug and play and supports 95% of keyboards and mice on the market. Wait, we just read this thing is $100. Seriously? Maybe you could justify the purchase when combined with a backward compatible PS3 that could add mouse control to PS2 titles. But we're betting that $100 would probably look better sitting somewhere inside your PC.

<![CDATA[Sony Passing On Better DualShock For No Good Reason?]]> MGS4 producer Ryan Payton may think the Dual Shock 3 feels better than the old version—and maybe it does—but according to Sony, the new controller is using Immersion's same base technology from 10 years ago. And it's a major point of contention that confuses Immersion as much as anyone else since they have far better technology in the ready.

I believe it's actually less expensive. The old technology utilizes two motors to create the complex set of sensations, whereas Immersion's new TouchSense technology utilizes a single motor, but we drive the motor in unique ways so that you can get stronger yet crisper effects... So you save on at least one motor, there's less power consumption, and you may save on other components and circuitry.
Oh, but it would cost Sony money in new licensing, right?
We have a standard royalty rate... we don't want to make this more expensive and give anyone a reason not to implement it.
Hmmm...then I guess that just leaves the cost of retooling Sony factories to...err...save money with a better product?

If you find the topic at all interesting (or you just want to spot Immersion talk around possible Wiimote patent violations), hit the link for the full interview. Sure, it's missing Sony's perspective on the Dual Shock, but Immersion is certainly making us feel a little gypped waiting for decade-old technology to reach most of us next spring.

<![CDATA[The PlayStation Controller Transformer]]> Fully realizing that Hasbro's Transformers has almost nothing to do with video gaming outside of a handful of games of varying quality, I ventured into the Hasbro booth at Comic Con 07 for purely personal reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to see this particular Autobot, who I think is named High Score 100, oddly enough, with obvious nods to the PlayStation's DualShock controller. No? Would you believe a Mad Catz controller?

Part of the Real Gear Robots line, it's due to hit stores next month. The rest of the line transforms into things like watches, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics mainstays— even one that looks like a Bluetooth headset. I'll assume that one is a Decepticon. And a total dick.

<![CDATA[Sony: Whoops, Dualshock Not Sixaxis Won Emmy]]>

OK, so I think we've finally gotten it officially cleared up. Earlier this week the Nation Academy of Television Arts and Sciences listed Nintendo and Sony as Emmy winners for "Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers."

Sony then put out a press release saying their Sixaxis had won. Turns out they jumped to the wrong assumption, it was their quite dated and legally-mired Dualshock that actually won the award. Whoops.

"In a press release dated January 8, 2007, SCEA announced we had been recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) with a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for the SIXAXIS wireless controller. Due to miscommunication between the two organizations, this information was incorrectly reported. SCEA won a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for the DUALSHOCK controller.

We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused."

OK, so is it stranger when we thought they were winning an Emmy for the Sixaxis or now that we know it's for the Dualshock?

<![CDATA[Use Keyboard, Mouse, DualShock On Your 360]]> The Xbox 360 game pad is pretty sweet as is, but there are some folks who will settle for nothing less than keyboard and mouse controls for the first person shooters. I am one of those people. I also happen to really like the PS2's DualShock.

If you're one of "us", the XCM 360 XFPS (great name, guys) might be what you need. Here's what it supports (clearly English is not their first language):

We will release the XCM 360 XFPS very soon, the function of XCM 360 XFPS: 1.Can let your xbox 360 controller has auto fire function. 2.Compatible with PS 2 Dual shock 2 (you can use PS 2 Dual shock 2 controller on Xbox 360 console) 3.Compatible with PC mouse and keyboard, it might be able to use on Halo 3.

[SIC]

Keep in mind that not every game will support KB&M controls, so this may be a crap shoot. Pre-orders are open now, but I'd hold off for a solid review.
