The PS3 Xbox 360 Controller? Over at Xbox-Scene Forums, moderator RDC has modded an Xbox 360 controller into a PS3 controller, writing: "The D-pad, Select, PS, Start, Square, Triangle, Circle, Cross, L1/R1 and L3/R3 buttons are all wired up right now and working, as are the LEDs for showing which controller it is." So, yes, this Frankencontroller will work with a PS3. And if that wasn't enough, RDC did the same in reverse by modding a DualShock 3 into an Xbox 360 controller. Take a look after the jump.

June 27, 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller will be available for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) in Europe on July 2, 2008. The eagerly awaited wireless controller with vibration function will put truly responsive gaming power into players' hands, shaking up gaming experiences when it arrives on PS3 this summer.

It's not what you see - it's what you feel that makes DUALSHOCK 3 the first choice for all gamers. More than 28 million DUALSHOCK controllers have been sold since the first DUALSHOCK release for PlayStation® in 1998. Now DUALSHOCK 3 puts some serious power into existing and future PS3 titles, with its vibration function offering even more interactive play between gamers and the many games - past, present and future - which support the vibration functionality. DUALSHOCK 3 also retains the high-precision, high-response motion-sensitive aspects that have made SIXAXIS so popular.

David Reeves, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, commented, "We are delighted to confirm that DUALSHOCK 3 will be released in SCEE territories in early July. We hope this will add to the intense gaming experience for our fans, as we continue to evolve PS3, its software and its peripherals."

Almost all future PS3 releases will support DUALSHOCK 3, and the controller is already compatible with many existing PS3 titles (firmware upgrade 1.94 required). Face the heart-pounding fear of alien warfare in Resistance: Fall of Man™, hold tight as you tear through the streets of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue™, or feel the thrill of treasure hunting in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune™ - your favourite PS3 games like you've never experienced them before.

Making your gaming experience more immersive, more intuitive and more realistic, DUALSHOCK 3 is the only Bluetooth® controller combining vibration function and SIXAXIS™ features, and the first choice for anyone wanting to get the most out of their PS3 gaming experience.

<![CDATA[ Happy 10th Birthday, DualShock ]]> Ten years ago this week, the DualShock controller was first released. Sure, it wasn't the first controller to feature rumble, nor was it the first to feature analogue sticks, but what it lacked in innovation it's more than made up for in perseverance. After all, how many control pad designs make it to their second hardware generation, let alone - albeit belatedly - a third?

<![CDATA[ DualShock 3 Dated For Australia. Bring Money. ]]> SCE Australia have announced an antipodean release date for the DualShock 3. It'll be available on April 24 for - wait for it - AUD$99.95. Which is USD$92. Which is AUD$30 more than the Sixaxis cost. This leaves Australians paying twice as much for a Dualshock 3 as they did for a Dualshock 2 (which went for AUD$49.95), a turn of events that would be comedic if we weren't talking about the PS3 in a PAL territory. Australians, you, uh, may wish to consider importing.

SYDNEY, 15 April 2008 - Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) today announced the launch of the DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3), which will be available in Australia from Thursday 24th April 2008 with an RRP of AU$99.95 and in New Zealand from 9th May 2008 with an RRP of NZ$109.95.

The DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS™ motion sensing technology. Each hit, crash and explosion will be more realistic than ever as the user will be able to feel the rumble right through the palm of their hand. The DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller can even detect natural movements for real-time and high precision interactive play, acting as a natural extension of the user's body.

DUALSHOCK 3 utilises Bluetooth technology for wireless game play and the controller's USB cable to seamlessly and automatically charge the controller through the PS3 at anytime. By integrating all these features into the unique PlayStation® controller design, the DUALSHOCK 3 will further enhance the advanced game play experience that is only available on the PS3 system.

Key Features:

· Pressure sensors that rumble with each action making every impact feel like you're right in the game

· SIXAXIS™ highly sensitive motion control system senses your every move

· Bluetooth technology for wireless game play; the PS3 system can support up to seven wireless controllers at one time

· Ability to be charged at any time through the PS3 system using the controller's USB cable

<![CDATA[ Still No Word On DualShock 3 For Europe ]]> Japan are enjoying their DualShock 3s, the US are about to enjoy their DualShock 3s, I'm definitely enjoying my DualShock 3...but what about poor old Europe? Are they to be hoisted upon their well-worn cross yet again, atop which lies a tattered plate with the inscription "Forever Late?" Probably. Sony Europe have "no word" on when the controller will be arriving in the old world, which has no doubt instantly cost them a few thousand sales as impatient PS3 owners pony up and import the (inevitably cheaper) American model.

<![CDATA[ Dualshock 3 in the House ]]> The DualShock 3 just landed on my doorstep, right next to that pink and green frosting. Even though I've messed around with one before I was still surprised at it's heft. It makes the soon to be obsolete SIXAXIS feel like an empty shell. My one complaint, though I haven't used it yet, is an expected one: No removable rechargeable battery. I know I'm being difficult but I hate being tethered to my PS3 with such an absurdly short charging leash.

<![CDATA[ SIXAXIS Discontinued ]]> We all pretty much figured that the SIXAXIS was on its last legs now that the DualShock 3 is hitting shelves. And today a Sony rep has confirmed with MTV that this is indeed the case. The SIXAXIS is not more.

Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it's completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).
Our guess is that manufacturing has ceased (or ceased some time ago) and that it's just a matter of shipping out dusty boxes from warehouses at this point. Our other guess is that those who don't care about rumble can soon be on the lookout for some bargain bin SIXAXIES. Is that the official plural? Did we ever have a chance to finalize that?

<![CDATA[ PS3 Rumble Controllers Hit Next Week ]]> 2381780276_f090cebdb9_m.jpg The Official Playstation blog just announced that the the DUALSHOCK 3 rumble controllers have started shipping to stores and should be on sale by next week, a week earlier than the original street date.

The DS3 includes pressure sensors that rumble with each action and the SIXAXIS motion controls. The asking price if a whopping $55. The post included a "complete" list of titles that will support the DS3 at launch, a list that is much shorter than the one released at TGS, though that list included titles that still haven't hit stores and this one doesn't. All new releases that support rumble will now have a DS3 compatible icon on them, according to the blog. Playstation is also a page on the official Playstation website dedicated to games with force feedback support.

Hit the jump for the list of available games that support the new controller, titles with asterisks will require a patch to use rumble. For those title the patch will automagically download to your console when you start it up.

<![CDATA[ DualShock 3 Dated For US ]]> We have more word from retailer conference Destination PlayStation: the DualShock 3—you know, that DualShock we've been waiting for since the PS3's launch—has gotten a US release date.

Set to launch April 15th for $54.99, it's slated to coincide with the release of GT5 Prologue. Oh yes, feel those engines roar through your controller and make your SIXAXIS-wielding friends envious...like they're just playing a video game or something.

UPDATE: Sony has confirmed all of this information. Press release on the jump.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA INTRODUCES METAL GEAR SOLID®4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS PS3 BUNDLE AVAILABLE IN LATE Q2 2008 IN NORTH AMERICA
Company Also Announces Limited-Edition God of War® PSP® Entertainment Pack and April Availability of DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller for North America

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., February 26, 2008 - At its annual retail and publisher conference Destination PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced details of upcoming PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) (PSP-2000) hardware bundles with two of the most highly anticipated 2008 titles. The company also announced the April 2008 availability of DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller in North America.

To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3 bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499 (MSRP).

SCEA also announced the June 2008 availability of the limited-edition God of War® PSP Entertainment Pack for $199.99 (MSRP). The God of War Entertainment Pack will include a "Deep Red" PSP with God of War himself, Kratos, silk-screened on the back of the unit, a copy of the highly anticipated upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus game for PSP, the hit comedy movie from Columbia Pictures, "Superbad™," on UMD™ (Universal Media Disc), and a PLAYSTATION®Network voucher to download Syphon Filter®: Combat Ops from PLAYSTATION®Store. The stand-alone version of God of War: Chains of Olympus launches on March 4, 2008.

"Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal way to offer that continued value to our consumers," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall."

SCEA will introduce the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for the first time in North America in April 2008 for $54.95 (MSRP). DUALSHOCK 3, which incorporates both rumble and motion sensing SIXAXIS™ technologies, maintains the award-winning design and precise, responsive features of PlayStation controllers. The added rumble feature, combined with the SIXAXIS system, enhances the gamer experience with more interactive, intuitive and immersive game play experience and will work with more than 100 current PS3 titles.

In additional news coming from Destination PlayStation, SCEA announced Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots will be available in North America in late Q2 2008. A Metal Gear Online "Starter Pack" will also be launched to support online game play. Gamers can select a single player experience or take the action online with up to 16 players and battle it out using the latest weapons and stealth techniques. For those eager to take on Solid Snake's nemesis, Liquid Ocelot, a nationwide pre-sell promotion will enable gamers to pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and be guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.

<![CDATA[ XFPS Rate Up Adapter Is Available For PS3 ]]> While the PS3 is already pretty friendly to most mouse and keyboard setups, the XFPS Rate Up Adapter (formerly just for the Xbox 360) is a peripheral that allows you to remap SIXAXIS controls to your stubborn PC ways of old and control any game as you would a computer title. It's completely plug and play and supports 95% of keyboards and mice on the market. Wait, we just read this thing is $100. Seriously? Maybe you could justify the purchase when combined with a backward compatible PS3 that could add mouse control to PS2 titles. But we're betting that $100 would probably look better sitting somewhere inside your PC.

<![CDATA[ 80GB PS3 Not Dying, But Being Reborn Bigger? ]]> Ars Technica's Opposable Thumbs has a Sony mole who has filled them in on some potentially juicy gossip. According to the insider, Sony will not be dropping their 80GB PS3 to abandon a two-model retail approach, but instead upgrading said higher tier model to better differentiate the products. In this scenario, the 80GB PS3 will see a bump to either 120GB or 160GB and include a Dual-Shock 3 controller—but still run $499.

Feel free to comb over the source text with a fine-toothed comb:

Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same....The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller...
Hopefully this doesn't imply that Sony is evolving to a strategy without movie/game bundles with their consoles (which we'd doubt) . Because when Sony was generous enough to allow customers to install their own hard drives, it would seem like a waste to only use hard drives to differentiate their PS3 products (I mean, what's one rumble controller, really?).

And for those who don't know, Ars publications are highly respected in the technology industry. So that's why you'll see the internet taking this one pretty seriously.

We also wouldn't mind the DualShock 3 being renamed "we lied, you do care" or Nintendo's friend codes going by something more catchy like "we want you to play with buddies IN PERSON, get it through your f'ing head already."

<![CDATA[ 40GB PS3 On Sale. People Buy It. ]]> What a difference a year makes. When the PS3 launched on November 11, 2006, a frenzy ensued. The console was met with long lines fueled by a strong demand. To mark the one year anniversary of the PLAYSTATION 3, Sony launched a cheaper 40GB model that does not support backwards compatibility. The DUALSHOCK 3, Ratchet and Clank Future and Dynasty Warriors 6 put on sale as well. Less frenzy and crap weather, the new console did get a fair enough turnout — though, nothing like the craziness of last year. (That's to be expected!) At the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera Customers picked up the DS3 as well. We haven't heard of any sellouts here, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of boost the 40GB model gave the PS3 in Japan. <![CDATA[ Importer Warns Of DualShock 3 Import Price Gouging ]]> New York-based importer National Console Support warns customers today that getting their hands on a Japanese version of the DualShock 3 might be tricky. It writes in its semi-daily news updates that offers from one overseas distributor has the following requirement: "In order to obtain 1 Dual Shock 3, we also have to buy 1 PlayStation 3 40GB console." That's a hefty tax.

NCSX urges caution to rumble-hungry games, warning them to wait until stock levels off or distributors offer more sane pricing schemes.

One of its biggest competitors, Play-Asia, is no longer soliciting pre-orders, asking customer to check in for potential restocks. With two of the bigger Japanese hardware and software importers unclear of their availability for the November 11 launch of the new controller, it's looking likely that latecomers will have to hold tight for a while longer.

<![CDATA[ Resistance Patch Arrives, Adds Full DualShock 3 Fun ]]> The latest patch for Insomniac Games' Resistance: Fall of Man hits today, bringing with a host of new features. Included in "Patch 6" is rumble via the still unreleased DualShock 3 for both single and multiplayer games. Also new is the ability to take screen shots with a USB keyboard, with snaps saved to the Cross Media Bar's photo section. Password protected custom game options have also been added. In addition, there's a ton of new features that will probably only appeal to longtime online players, plus the usual bug fixes and balance changes.

The full list of changes in the latest patch is after the jump, courtesy of Insomniac's James Stevenson, a man who simply cannot be faulted for his gaming blog preference.

New Features
- Player with a USB keyboard attached to their Playstation 3 may now take in-game screenshots by pressing the "printscreen" key (multiplayer only). There will be a slight pause as the screenshot is taken. The screenshots will be viewable from the Photo bar of the XMB menu.
- Players may now create a custom game that requires a password for other players to join. When creating a custom game, select the option named "password" and enter the desired password from the on-screen keyboard. Players who are invited into a password protected game by another player already in the game do not need to enter a password to accept the invite. Password protected games will be indicated by a "lock" icon next to the game name in the "Find Game" screen.
- Bullseye Tags may be turned off as a custom game option without turning off the bullseye.
- Carbine 40mm Grenades may be turned off as a custom game option without turning off the carbine.
- There is a new game option named "Send Voice Chat To All". If this is enabled, then all players in the game may hear voice chat sent from any other player in the game, including players on the opposing team and spectators. Squad voice chat will still only be heard by members of the same squad. This option defaults to off.
- The game option "Round balancing" now has a third option available to custom games - "Aggressive". If round balancing is set to aggressive, it will attempt to rebalance the teams every round based on how well the players scored in the previous round to create the most even teams. "Aggressive" round balancing WILL split parties.
- Both Multiplayer and Singleplayer Resistance: Fall of Man now support the rumble feature of the Playstation Dual Shock 3 controller.

Balance Changes
- Range and damage on the Rossmore 236 has been decreased for both primary and secondary fire modes
- Reload time of the LAARK L209 has been increased.
- Projectile speed of the LAARK L209 has been decreased.
- Splash damage radius of the LAARK L209 has been decreased.
- Hedgehog grenade splash damage has been generally increased, although the radius in which it will kill a player in 1 hit has been decreased.
- Frag grenade splash damage radius has been decreased.
- Arc charger fire rate has been increased.
- Arc charger clip size has been reduced.
- Arc charger damage has been decreased for the primary fire and increased for the secondary fire.
- Rate of fire the bullseye tag (secondary fire) has been decreased.

Bug Fixes
- Fixed several possible collision exploits
- The "Elite Soldier" and "Assassin" medals are now obtainable in all ranked gametypes instead of just Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch
- "Defender" ribbons obtained in ranked CTF games will now correctly add to your total stats
- Fixed several issues that could cause party members to drop out of a party
- Various lobby, disconnect, and miscellaneous fixes.

<![CDATA[ PS3 Firmware v1.94 Adding DualShock3 Support ]]> According to Shacknews, the new PS3 firmware version 1.94 will be adding DualShock3 support. Packaged with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction before it's available for download, the firmware update will allow DualShock3 owners (which is actually no one at the moment) to toggle rumble. By pressing the middle PS3 button, gamers will be able to access controller options—which we're assuming will be added to the list of other options like shutting down the console, controller, etc.

But it's salt in the wound for those of us who won't see the DualShock3 until Spring or the day we decide to drop too much money for it online. Since Sony didn't release firmware 2.0 along with Home at TGS as some of us expected, they need to be more careful with these firmware updates, lest they be driven to the thousandth.

<![CDATA[ Region Free DualShock 3 Supports Ratchet & Clank Future Day One ]]> This afternoon, I cruised on up to the Insomniac Games office for a last minute look at Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction for the PLAYSTATION 3. Having missed out on the game's DualShock 3 support in the Tokyo Game Show demo and well aware (read: right pissed) at the release "lag" that meant most North Americans won't have access to the PS3's rumbling afterthought, I was curious about support for the "ShockAxis" for the domestic release. Short answer? It's looking good.

Here's the deal: while Sony won't officially support an imported Japanese DualShock 3, games like Ratchet & Clank Future will. The game was listed as DualShock 3 ready in the official "List Of PS3 Games That Support The DualShock 3" without requiring a software update, but I wanted to be sure.

The game—the first to support the new controller sans software update—ships on October 30, with the DualShock 3 hitting Japanese retailers on November 11, so there's still a potential delay in getting to enjoy Ratchet & Clank Future as it was intended. The worse news is that actually finding an importer with one in stock is going to prove more difficult.

We're going to be in touch with everyone who has a game shipping before the American and European release dates of the DS3, just to satisfy our curiosity.

<![CDATA[ Dual Shock 3 Is Better, Yo ]]> It's nice to have the rumble back. Really, really nice. The SIXAXIS feels very, I dunno, empty? But now that we know the DS3 is coming and some of us have even gotten hands on, how does it compare with the DualShock 2? Is the DS3 rumble better? According to Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton:

Absolutely, yeah. It feels better...

And Payton knows his controls — he's one of the guys responsible for making MGS4's more intuitive. All the games I played at TGS with the DualShock 3 added what the French call I-don't-know-what to games. Not a fan of the SIXAXIS, not a fan at all.

<![CDATA[ DualShock 3 Rumble Hands-On ]]>

I just came back from playing around with the new rumblerific DualShock 3 controller.

It's funny how you don't realize how much you miss a thing sometimes until it returns. I knew that shooters on the PS3 sometimes felt a little off, but I typically adjusted pretty quickly and it didn't bother me.

But playing through a new level of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (pure awesomeness) with vibration on, I realized just how much I missed the vibration of a machine gun or occasional kick of a handgun. The vibration is nothing special, nothing that you haven't always had in the Xbox 360 controller, but it sure is nice that Sony has finally gotten with the times.

As you can tell from my pics, one crisp, one not so much, the only external difference is the appearance of the words "DualShock 3" on the front edge of the controller.

I also noticed that the controller now has a much more solid feel. Before the PS3 controller felt hollow, almost toy-like, now it has the heft of the Xbox 360 controller but in a seemingly slightly smaller, more compact package.

<![CDATA[ The PlayStation Controller Transformer ]]> Fully realizing that Hasbro's Transformers has almost nothing to do with video gaming outside of a handful of games of varying quality, I ventured into the Hasbro booth at Comic Con 07 for purely personal reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to see this particular Autobot, who I think is named High Score 100, oddly enough, with obvious nods to the PlayStation's DualShock controller. No? Would you believe a Mad Catz controller?

Part of the Real Gear Robots line, it's due to hit stores next month. The rest of the line transforms into things like watches, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics mainstays— even one that looks like a Bluetooth headset. I'll assume that one is a Decepticon. And a total dick.

<![CDATA[ Sony: Whoops, Dualshock Not Sixaxis Won Emmy ]]>

OK, so I think we've finally gotten it officially cleared up. Earlier this week the Nation Academy of Television Arts and Sciences listed Nintendo and Sony as Emmy winners for "Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers."

Sony then put out a press release saying their Sixaxis had won. Turns out they jumped to the wrong assumption, it was their quite dated and legally-mired Dualshock that actually won the award. Whoops.

"In a press release dated January 8, 2007, SCEA announced we had been recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) with a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for the SIXAXIS wireless controller. Due to miscommunication between the two organizations, this information was incorrectly reported. SCEA won a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for the DUALSHOCK controller.

We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused."

OK, so is it stranger when we thought they were winning an Emmy for the Sixaxis or now that we know it's for the Dualshock?

<![CDATA[ Use Keyboard, Mouse, DualShock On Your 360 ]]> The Xbox 360 game pad is pretty sweet as is, but there are some folks who will settle for nothing less than keyboard and mouse controls for the first person shooters. I am one of those people. I also happen to really like the PS2's DualShock.

If you're one of "us", the XCM 360 XFPS (great name, guys) might be what you need. Here's what it supports (clearly English is not their first language):

We will release the XCM 360 XFPS very soon, the function of XCM 360 XFPS: 1.Can let your xbox 360 controller has auto fire function. 2.Compatible with PS 2 Dual shock 2 (you can use PS 2 Dual shock 2 controller on Xbox 360 console) 3.Compatible with PC mouse and keyboard, it might be able to use on Halo 3.

[SIC]

Keep in mind that not every game will support KB&M controls, so this may be a crap shoot. Pre-orders are open now, but I'd hold off for a solid review.
