Man, I never played CONTACT. Thought of getting it sometime, but never really took the initiative.

Now it is a rare game I can't find on shelves, with the exception of a damaged GameStop copy.

Hopefully I don't wait on this game this time.

I think a more "modern" or even "futuristic" Zelda would be interesting, but only as a unique entitiy within the series.

I wouldn't want it to be a permanent change, as it would make it less special in the long run.

Dude, bring on the modern tech in Zelda. Maybe someday we'll inch our way into a game that resembles the mock Future Zelda concept art that floated around last year. Remember that shit?

After a little thought I don't see why Zelda couldn't one day advance past where we currently are technology wise.

Look at where Final Fantasy started and where it is today. From purely swords and magic to space and a look and feel not all that unlike Star Trek.

Darksiders is similar to Zelda and yet War uses a gun, there are car--that he throws at enemies.

I think as long as the core of what Zelda is remains they can do anything and go anywhere they want with it. Put in rail guns, space, and technology on par with things in Blade Runner, just keep the exploration and adventuring and pointy green hat and you still have Zelda.

Y'know I wouldn't be so against a modern Zelda, I mean it can't be to bad..

As long as Ninty knows what they're doing they should be fine, it's not like they're dropping Link in GTA or anything like that. If they introduced the setting believably...then I have full confidence.

I'm not a HUGE Zelda fan, but I respect the series enough to want to see Ninty experiment with it...

Actually, they already have guns in the form of canons in the game. It's odd that no one has though to well, make a small one and hand...

er wait, they did have a bazooka style thing in TP now that I think about it.

So really, a move to steam powered tech is about where I can see the tech advancement right now.

well, judging from zelda's shift from off-screen, damsil-in-distress to on-screen, active party participant, i'd say zelda games can get pretty modern.

I think the most modern Zelda games are likely to get is something like steampunk. We already have steam-powered boats and trains, and complex mechanical devices like the hookshot, spinner and self-reloading crossbow. It's not too hard to imagine a game where Link starts out shoveling coal on a steam-powered airship, but a dungeon set inside a hydroelectric dam is pushing it.

More modern? Hmm. Call of Zelda: Modern Adventuring!

First you sneak up to the door, toss in a flash bomb, then while the dodongo is blind, you stuff a bomb into it's mouth. And if you have the Deep Impact Perk, your Master Sword can actually shoot through walls.

Uh... yeah, that's never going to happen.

The Legend of Zelda series is arguably the most delicate subject in gaming. People want to see new things, but chances are these new things will cause an uproar, upsetting even those who demanded change.

I've heard many people suggest a Zelda game set in the future, and I admit I am intrigued by this idea. However, there's an extremely delicate balance between keeping things fresh and alienating the familiarity of the characters and setting.

Think about how upset people were when they first heard about the train in Spirit Tracks. The cries of horror came simply as a result of trains being introduced into the Zelda universe.

The Legend of Zelda is to video games what Star Wars is to movies and what the Lord of the Rings is to books. The fanatics try to make sense of timelines, analyze every minor detail, and constantly comb for inaccuracies.

If cars, guns, "light swords", etc. are added, it would be nearly impossible to keep the Zelda faithful happy. Sure, it could be bad-ass, but it might not feel like a Zelda game. I think that's the main reason the developers are so hesitant to fully revamp the series.

I'm not saying that the series doesn't need to change; I fully welcome some drastic changes. It's just important to be very, very careful in how it's done.

@Instant_Awesome: With full health it shoots swirling beams of energy! Didn't that feature always come with the upgraded sword of legends old?

Maybe it was actually sent to the past by future beings, or maybe it was placed by aliens long ago like the pyramids or Myan temples or Ron Jeremy's junk.
