All of Home should be free, with advertisements, and tie-ins to buy real-world versions of clothing etc that are in Home.
Right now I see no reason to pay a penny for any of this stuff since the actual experience isn't that compelling. It's made considerably less so by the fact that you have to pay real money for anything useful.
Please, Sony, what on earth. Why would you create a software to make clothes for avatars when it's not currently compatible with Home, the place where you use said avatars? I am sorry, but as much as I support you, it is retarded. It shouldn't be released before there's an actual use for it, otherwise people won't buy it. And releasing it only in Japan? Really, Sony? Are you still that backasswards? Japan is the country hit worst by the recession, gaming-wise, so I don't see the appeal releasing something there compared to the rest of the world. Especially since the latter only needs to you translate menus.
@ShadowOdin a.k.a. Kinjinson: the 2000yen investment gets you a head start as to what kind of shirt you COULD be wearing once it's actually implemented. What did Activision call it, "First Day Advantage?"
I absolutely loved Home and have always wished for something like this! Looks like I'll have to make that Japanese PSN account sooner than I thought. And I have no problem buying clothes and items from Home. The money goes towards the development of Home, and I have no problem showing my support for programs that I truly enjoy.
as an avid user of home, without home intergration i find this pointless. i could understand paying out a premium to use this to design new clothing for home, only if after i did not have to repay for what i just created. now, the ability to then resell the designs in the mall space would be nice, even if it is only for psn bucks. but a japan only release and no home support will only hurt this good idea. balls in sony's court, will they make the right call or dribble all the way and miss the layup?
@TheVesra: I know, right? This just scream idiocracy all the way. I love Sony and how inventive they can be at times. But this? This is just stupid! They a great idea that could really add to Home and they do what? They don't make them compatible. I want to know the thought-process behind that. I really, really do.
lol Sony if you're wondering why your profits aren't as high as last year; you might want to start realizing that leaving stuff for japan only does effect business interest.
Do you really think this would make a splash in the US? MAYBE Europe, but this just strikes me as the kind of thing that most console gamers in the States would look at, yell 'GAY!' and then immediately start beating off to Call of Duty.
@Archaotic: But with gaming becoming less and less taboo these days, this might hit something even in the states. Fashion fans, girls, etc might actually be interested in buying this, so I think Sony should at least try.
@Archaotic: Bro, you have to get over this hate you have with FPS and the popularity they hold in the US.
Im not sure if this would do well or not here in the US but it sure as hell doesn't hurt to see how it turns out. Someone who is heavy into designing clothing may find this a true asset.
I'll get over my hatred when other genres are allowed to flourish and gain critical and sales acclaim again. There's too many of 'em, and the FPS is bleeding out into other genres now, which needs to stop before it gets any worse. =/
I don't know, I can't help but think that the money and resources spent to make this . . . game? . . . . program? . . . . . . . abomination? could have been more wisely spent on other projects or even divisions.
Same goes for Home, but they might yet make something out of that.
The audience for Dress can't really be that large, even in Japan, could it?
@Telecinision: You can't know that it's a waste until it happens, and that's why companies like Sony and Nintendo are needed in this industry. Otherwise it would be rehash after rehash, and certain genres would never be created. It took Singstar's success to get us Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
And while the game does not necessarily cater to most of us, it doesn't really look like shovelware. I hope Sony taps into a market with this, like Nintendo did with Wii Sports and Wii Fit.
And if anything, a little advertising money couldn't hurt.
Home made Sony a million dollars in a month with as little useful content as it has now. Believe me, Home is here to stay, even if it might not be the most useful thing in the world.
...but this? What the hell, Sony. The R&D money spent on this...thing...could've gone towards, oh, I don't know, making a new RPG or securing a third party exclusive or two more? That might've been nice.
@FP_slomo788: Yeah, I get your point, and watching the youtube video it looks fairly polished.
However, this appears to be catering to far more of a niche market than Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Guitar Hero.
On top of that, Sony seems to be in a fair bit of financial trouble. If they're looking to capture a new audience, I think they're going to have to think bigger than 'clothing designers'.
Well, Ms could have spent 50 million on making another game, instead the buy DLC for a game i will never play again. (hint it starts with G ends with 4)
@Archaotic: I think Sony is realizing what Nintendo realized a few years ago: catering to just the hardcore gamer audience is not rewarding with the rising costs of development. Sony spent the past years dumping money in big games with huge production costs, losing money on hardware, etc. For what? (Same goes for EA).
If they don't make those mainstream games, their sales won't be able to cover those expenses, and they will go under. I support this way of making money, as long as they still support franchises like Uncharted, White Knight, inFamous, etc.
Home and this are much better than ads and taxes on online play imo.
@Telecinision: Heh, it's Sony we're talking about. While they are using Nintendo as models, they will try all they can to not be perfect copycats. Instead of having a Wii Sports ripoff, they will try an untapped genre.
Clothing/Fashion is almost as popular as fitness these days, why not take care of one while Nintendo is going for the other?
@FP_slomo788: I think that Sony's best bet for getting the PS3 into gear making some money is to keep trying to refine their manufacturing process so they can drop that price. That seems like a more logical way to try and turn a profit.
@Telecinision: I don't believe for a second they don't have a plan for that too. But what best way for the PS3 to take off than to also hit a new market a la Wii? A $300 SKU with this "game" could have a lot of potential from a commercial standpoint.
@FP_slomo788: Three hundred bucks for an SKU with Dress just doesn't seem very likely to me. Possibly a college could buy a few units to make a "lab" for designers, but even that wouldn't push a ton of consoles and seems unlikely.
I just can't put myself in Sony's shoes to understand why they'd be working on this. Does not compute.
@Telecinision: Haha, I completely understand you man, not saying I'm anticipating the game or anything. Just saying your reaction is similar to the one of a lot of people to a lot of games/ideas that actually sold very well and spawned genres.
A game like this has not been done before (well not that I know of), so I will at least try to understand how it could work.
@FP_slomo788: I don't think it is fair to call it a game. Sure, it has mini-games, but to me it feels more like a simulator for Home sans the Home support. Which is literally making me want to bang my head against the wall.
actually, if I remember the initial announcement of "Dress" correctly, this could be one of the coolest features to come to the PS3 to date...
Yes paying for virtual clothes is lame, but I seem to recall the Sony reps saying that you could order REAL-LIFE versions of the clothes you compile...
I'm fairly sure Kotaku ran an article on it last year...
I for one would be interested in ordering a meticulously designed outfit (to better imitate my avatar :P)...
also, and somewhat unrelated, that's some AWESOME haair on the avatar in the screen shot!

MUAHAHAHA
...where the fatty come from? where the fatty come from?

Quite facepalm worthy.

Although, maybe Sony released in Japan first because they didn't want to translate it.

Do we have to pay them to design new clothes, or is it we have to pay to buy outfits?
Because paying to design new clothes? No company would be that crazy.
