So... which version is the version to get? I'm assuming the DS one, but what is the Wii version like?
Oh well, I have plenty of time to wait and find out which version is best, I can't afford to buy anything for a while now... #drawntolifethenextchapter
@Manuel Calavera, Reaper Supreme: Pixel Art is his main thing. I mean, he's done two short animted movie things with pixel Art. Both amazing. Can't quite remember the first (Pirate Baby something?) but the most recent one(as far as I know) was Kings Of Power 4 Billion % ...
About the time I saw that, I looked up his blog where he talked about working with 5th Cell. I think he also worked on that DS Contra game... #drawntolifethenextchapter
@Cptn.PaxtonAstypalaea(Corsair): Pirate Baby Cabana Battle Street Fight something. Yeah his movies are great. I'm just saying sometimes his pixel art tends to get... Odd. Like pregnant naked girls being cut open. #drawntolifethenextchapter
@excel_excel: I had a good time with Lockes Quest. I didn't think I would like it that much, as I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I was happily surprised.
With all the big console games coming out right now plus M&L: BIS to finish up, this game may have to stay on my "To Get" list for a bit :( #drawntolifethenextchapter
@excel_excel: As someone who played Lock's Quest from beginning to end, the game is good but not great.
The sprites and animations are awesome, the story has more depth than I would have thought (a lot of plot twists, too), and the gameplay can be fun.
But, I reached a point about halfway through the game where ONE battle configuration could win nearly every battle. There are a handful of points that will trip you up if previous battles in a set are not planned out correctly, but they can be overcome as well.
Also, I am not much of a fan of the main character art used in dialogue sequences. I really wish they had simply blown up his sprite instead of featuring those ugly images.
Overall, though, it was worth the $20 I paid for it.
(P.S. - This gives me a chance to show off the hidden "demo room" from the game. SPOILERS!)
@excel_excel: And they will never get any more and there is noplace else nearby that might sell it and you can't order it online from anywhere?
I've been surprised how much I'm enjoying BIS. I didn't like Partners in Time much, thought Superstar Saga was ok, but Bowser is hilarious and it really is mostly about him. That's its biggest advantage, I think. Mario and Luigi's fake italian is funny, yeah, but playing as them all the time gets boring. Bowser constantly insults everyone he comes across and gloats about how great he is.
Basically, he gives the Mario RPG series what it needed: personality in the protagonist, whereas the rest always focused on the antagonists. #drawntolifethenextchapter
@excel_excel: And he's missed out the Metal Gear Solid and Chrono Trigger references...
Some of my fav lines in the game are not in the Developer room, but towards the end of the game, and include references to Cthulhu and Gremlins I think... #drawntolifethenextchapter
@GohanGVO: Actually, I was talking about the one Tobis, I think it is, makes in the developer room. Look up what you unlock if you complete MGS after saving Meryl... #drawntolifethenextchapter
What I don't understand is why THIS game isn't called Scribblenauts. I mean, aside from the pointless option of making letters yourself, there was no scribbling to be seen.
I would be more excited about this if drawing on the DS were easier. The stylus is too thick and it's very hard to actually control what you're drawing with any level of accuracy. Still, it's a really cool concept for a game.
@Sonira - not a zombie!: It really is laying down pixel art. My girlfriend sat down with the first game and made her main character Travis Touchdown after a few hours of photoshop and Travis pics.
...the cloud platforms were the ones from Mario, and the vines were the Super Mario World Pirhana plant vines.
Oh, and the sun was the SMB3 Angry sun. All hail photoshop and pixel art. (Though each piece did take several hours.)
Not much of a portable gamer myself but the more I read about Scibblenauts and now Drawn to Life the more I think I need to take the plunge and finally get myself a DS.
@Marker: Yeah, there are a lot of worthwhile games for the DS, especially games like The World Ends With You, Elite Beat Agents, and Professor Layton. There's a hell of a lot of genre variety to be found.
@Sonira - not a zombie!: Great! Another system to sink money into, as if my backlog of PS3 and Wii games wasn't big enough. Even though I don't even have Scribblenauts and I'm already trying to imagine how I'd solve some of the puzzles I've read about.
@Sonira - not a zombie!: You're given a mannequin template and you can opt to have three or four arms instead of two -- or one leg instead of two. What you draw is then animated by the game, giving you some basic walking , arm-waving, and jumping movements. Your creation isn't static.
@Sonira - not a zombie!: There is also height/width variation in the character creator. For example you can make a Sackboy-type character with a big head and little tiny body.
This article brought back memories of the original RPG maker. It was pretty sweet but making your own creation and begging someone to come play it (no online) was not all that fun. Beyond their time I guess.
@Outkastprince: Oh man, I remember RPG Maker! I spent nine long months crafting a game with that - I had two notebooks packed with numbers corresponding to switches, doors, event triggers, etc. It filled up three memory cards. My friends passed it around and enjoyed it, but looking back on it, I don't know how they suffered through the horrible combat system...
And that, children, is my long and rambling tale of RPG Maker that you don't care about. The End.
I've gotta say, I didn't think much to the first Drawn to Life game, nor the Spongebob edition (My little brother had it, okay!?)
However, I'm willing to give this another go considering Scribblenauts is my favourite game this year (apart from mayyyybe Arkham Asylum)
@1up: Welcome to 2009, where someone can say their favorite games of the year are a licensed comic book character game and a DS game... and not be wrong.
For the Wii? Hrm... Unless it's going Graffiti Kingdom style and utilizing the increased processing power (it's not, clearly) I'll stick with the DS version. I very liked the first one.
@globones: Easily. Plus the PS1 level visuals for the environment look better on a tiny screen than on a 40 inch plasma (I don't have a 40 inch plasma, but many people do)

I did fail to capture it on camera, though, and I forget where it takes place in the game.
And, technically, I did not miss the Chrono Trigger reference seeing as how I have never played the game (but I do own the DS version)! ;)

That fourth picture has at least two game references in it. Bonus points to the person who can point it out.
The fifth picture reminds me of the recent story about Scribblenauts' original name. #drawntolifethenextchapter

I am wondering about the character creation system (in regards to the 'four arms, one leg' part). Are the parameters adjustable to fit your art?
