The best part? Those of us in the West will be given new, never before released bonus content, which the publisher describes as "a "Payback Mode" and four hidden bosses." This will inevitably lead to Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and The Tower of Mirrors Payback: International Remix + being released in Japan in the summer or fall of 2008. It will then sell an extra 50,000 or so extra copies of the game to people who already own it. Those poor bastards probably don't even see it coming.

<![CDATA[Dragon Quest Swords All Naughty Like]]> Dragon Quest Swords did alright. The game sold something like 300,000 units in its first week in Japan, making it the fastest selling Wii game. The game's art direction was a departure from the game's typical Akira Toriyama look. Was all gothy. There was even a gothic lolita character named Setia. DQ Swords' fan service includes in-game up-skirts. Perfect fodder real life ones! Here's costume player Ushijima doing her not-Square-Enix-approved take on Setia, upskirt homage and everything.

Full box art after the jump.

<![CDATA[Halo 3 Tops Japanese Amazon Charts]]> Not out until September, but Halo 3 is already topping the Amazon Japan "Best Seller" charts. Based on Amazon orders and pre-orders, these charts list which upcoming titles are most popular. As of posting, the top four are:

  • Halo 3
  • Dragon Quest Swords
  • A.C.E. 3
  • Doki Doki Majo Shinpan

Not sure how good of an indication Amazon Japan is for total sales, so take this for what it is: Halo 3 topping the Amazon Japan sales chart. Nothing more, nothing less.

<![CDATA[Square-Enix USA Opens Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest Floodgates]]> North American gamers will have plenty of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest spin-offs to grind through over the next year as Square-Enix has finally announced four vague release dates for four of its upcoming games.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker for the Nintendo DS will hit over here in the fourth quarter of 2007 with Dragon Quest Swords for the Wii, announced what-seems-like-forever-ago, still without a release date. DQ: Swords is being developed with "casual audiences in mind" so expect a very laid back release schedule.

The PSP-bound Final Fantasy Tactics remake, redubbed The War of the Lions, has an October release window with the Nintendo DS cutesy spin-off Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings coming sometime in the winter. That could mean early 2008, so start tailoring your Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa wishlists with that in mind.

I've got the latter two on my purchase radar, but we'll see how crowded this holiday season gets. You buyin'?

<![CDATA[Clip: Dragon Quest Swords Japanese Trailer]]>

Fresh from the 2007 Square Enix party comes this new trailer for Dragon Quest Swords. Not surprisingly it's all in Japanese, but you still sit back and watch the visuals roll by. We get to see some cut scenes, and gameplay as well as some magic spells in action. Looks pretty comparable to the last Dragon Quest game graphics wise, but I do like some of the fancy outfits. But, that girl with the big, flat anime eyes mapped on to her 3D head and the guy with Charlie brown eyes standing next to her really freak me out.

<![CDATA[Square-Enix Party 2007 Goodies]]> Japanese gamers are getting hyped up for the Square-Enix Party 2007, just a few weeks away, an event packed to the gills with all things Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Today, Square-Enix revealed the buyable goodies that they'll shill at the event, including that lovely little Dragon Quest Swords Silver Ring (for 14000 yen) you see pictured above. Not only does it grant the wearer with extra nerd cred when playing the upcoming Wii game, it features an area effect of +1 year of virginity. Nice drop!

The rest of the stuff is pretty typical logo-ridden crap, with Ivalice Alliance clocks, Dragon Quest key rings and Full Metal Alchemist stamps rounding out the goods, but if you've got a friend going, have him pick up one of those rings.

Swords is a hack-and-slasher turns the Wii-mote into both a sword and a shield. The Wii exclusive was originally thought to be a launch title, but the game was apparently pushed back. No word on release dates for elsewhere.

<![CDATA[Clips: Dragon Quest Swords Trailer]]> Now this is what the Wii is all about. Swinging the wiimote around like a sword while making swooshing noises. Pretty sure the whole swooshing noise bit is optional, but it can't help but enhance the gameplay experience.

As you can see the cast includes a prostitute from the French revolution, generic woodsman number 5, pansy rapier boy, and the obligatory spiky-haired protagonist with encephalitis, so we've got all the bases covered. Wii Sports is fun and all, but Dragon Quest Swords has just the geeky flavor I need to forget that I'm technically exercising.

As an aside, I wanted to give a shout out to Jeromy Stroh over at Gamebrink, who added larger size streaming videos to their site awhile back just to help us fill out the page a bit more. He's good people.

<![CDATA[New Dragon Quest Swords Screens]]>

Along with the news that the next Dragon Quest title will be made for the DS, comes the news that the franchise's first next-gen title, DRAGON QUEST SWORDS: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be developed for the Wii.

Executive Producer, Yuu Miyake, feels the Wii is a perfect partner for Dragon Quest:

We believe (Dragon Quest's) appeal lies in simplicity that anyone can enjoy, and the excitement of becoming a hero in an epic adventure. With the Nintendo Wii, we believe that these aspects of the DRAGON QUEST experience can be taken to a whole new level of fun and interaction

DRAGON QUEST SWORDS: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors has no set release date as of yet, but thanks to the folks over at WorthPlaying, we have a bunch of new screens from the upcoming opus.
