@CRRRUNK: That's just what I was going to post about. It has been tough, to say the least, to play Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the 360. Enough so that I'm thinking of getting the PS3 version of Street Fighter IV over the 360.
@kylenalepa: I bougt SSF2HDR on the 360 and it is quite possibly the most aggravating purchase I have ever made. Here, before me, is a game I absolutely love that beckons back to childhood... and I can't play it properly because the hardware blows. QQ
I don't cheat and I don't glitch and I'll own any one who does. The last week or so me and my friends have been playing Gears online for several hours a night. None of us glitched, none of us cheated and we lose maybe 1 match in 10.
It just goes to show, that if you don't have some real skills or the ability to cooperate and work with your team ... guess you have to resort to cheats & exploits to win. Lame eh?
@NeoAkira: @Koztah: @dead_red_eyes: You seem to care an awful lot considering you own everybody who does glitch. Wouldn't that be grounds to encourage glitching? Or are you really just terrible? The world may never know.
What? I seriously couldn't keep up with what you were trying to get at.
But anyways going back to my comment and what I was able to derive from that "I'm-a-smartass" clusterfuck-of-a-comment of yours; to be able to use the glitches and exploits in SSBM actually requires skill. It's not just about knowing it, it's about practicing it and getting down the timing and button sequences.
And no I don't support glitches in the "I suck too much to play without them" sense, but if they create for more interesting gameplay then why not.
@I_Like_Rabbits: Every gaming console controller has it flaws. Even though I don't own a 360, I can say that the D-Pad is the only thing I don't like about the controller. While I'd like my PS3 controller more ergonomic and would completely rethink the button placement on the wiimote.
@Shteve: For whatever reason, I just like the Playstation controller. It fits me perfectly. I didn't like the triggers at first, but now the PS2 controller feels awkward when I use it in my bedroom.
The 360 controller is fine though, the d-pad is just a head scratcher.
Ditto. The lower "triggers" fucked me up for the longest time after switching from the PS2, but now that I've started to use the second joint of my middle finger to brush the edge instead of trying to press the button full-on, it's wonderfully responsive.
It should be noted that I have very, very large hands so this method might not work for everyone..
I still don't really understand the reliance on the D-Pad. I don't use it and I do fine. From 2D platformers to fighters, I use the analog stick and I can school most of the people I know still using the D-Pad.
@Jandlecack: I did it mainly because I use this controller for PC games, where you can map the buttons to do what you want. So now you can reliably gain four buttons, so for WoW players like Fahey this could be a bonus. Or is Fahey playing 2nd life now?
@MrBionic: Separate use of the D-pad is required for a lot of games, like when switching weapons in Gears of War. I can't tell you how many times I've ended up with the wrong weapon in the heat of battle due to the D-pad, like pressing right to select my chainsaw gun but getting the grenades instead (which are accessed by pressing up on the D-pad).
lol. no it doesn't. all of jam's supers blow. dont talk about gg as if you know how to play it. heres a list of supers that are actually good: johnny's, venom's dark angel, slayer's DOT and DHD, potemkin's heavenly pot buster, zappa raio's, and testament's key. jam is good because of her puffball and her wall loops.
@Jandlecack: @I_Like_Rabbits: @MrBionic: It's getting harder and harder to send a comment without retyping it on Kotaku.. buggy :( Anyways...
Look guys. This is simply a matter of preference. Sure the 360 D-pad doesn't work like the Dualshock D-pad. Many more people are firmware with Sony's design and for them, they think that's the best. I didn't become a heavy console gamer till I got my 360 and I prefer that over the Dualshock which I have used on many occasions in the past. Sure people can say "well, the best players in the world prefer this or that" but that doesn't mean its the ideal way for each person on an individual basis. The real point here is that we can see people like the gentleman in this post flying off the handle to fix "the big problem" which so many of the vocal minority have crowed around to champion but does this define a problem? I have a launch 360 and have played many games with the D-pad. I've yet to become frustrated by it. Sure many will say "you're not doing it right" or "you don't know how to play games" or some other kind of disparaging remarks but don't forget you're in games to enjoy it, not to become a contrarian.
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): It's fine if this is your first real crack at being a hardcore console gamer, but to the rest that have been hardcore since the NES and master system, we've had way better and know the difference. The 360 pad is very close to being good but is soo mushy that when you play some games when you want to press over it presses up instead. It isn't responsive enough and sometimes too responsive. Weird, that it can be both at the wrong times.
MS shoulda' took a cue from Sega (considering Peter Moore had a hand at the DC) and putting a pad comparable to the DC at least.
@imikedaman: This! I was writing up a comment of my own before I saw yours, and it was eerily similar. Like, almost word-for-word the same comment, other than the mention of particular weapons and the parenthetical.
Lots of games use the d-pad as an inventory or activity selection wheel, and it's just plain sloppy to control. A new 360 controller with a snappier d-pad would make my day.
@Netnavi: I would believe that if I could even hear a consensus but the reality is that the people who complain are always doing it for different reason, some of which contradict each other. Some say it's too sensitive while others say it's not registering presses. Some say it's to mushy while others say it's to rigid because it can't move well in it's socket. Some say that it's working off of one switch while others say that it doesn't have 8 directional switches but only has four. I'm not here to argue about who has a bigger gamer dick or who has been stroking theirs the longest; I'm not even saying that the design of the 360 D-pad is ideal. I'm simply saying that there is no ideal. I kinda gather you're saying it should have been designed to work like like the NES and SNES, Sega, etc... but people can't even agree those have the same user experience and we all know how much of a departure the Dual Shock's D-pad design was from that (just ask developers what kind of grief that caused. I believe that many of the unhappy people are just used to having things working a certain way... any departure from that is probably not a welcomed one especially when it can't compensate by yielding better results given less effort. If people bitch enough then it would be in MS best interest to change but MS is likely not responding because most people aren't complaining... just a vocal minority. Again, I don't have a problem with it and having used a Dual Shock D-pad and not feeling the gates of heaven open up for me is probably due to my not knowing any better. What the guy in this story is doing is clearly asserting his desire to change things to meet his expectations. Many have adjusted to the situation but he adjusted the situation.
Sadly your going to find that the hardcore elitist nerd crowd that visits kotaku regularly is going to rip your "the analog works fine" statement apart like they are correct.
Funny thing is, Ive been playing games now for 25+ years, fighters since the late 80s, and ive had no issues at all much like yourself switching to analog.
I think it boils down to people are just resistant to change. Either that or only the most competitive of people feel that the dpad is that much of an edge. I use an arcade stick usually for fighters myself, and will admit the 360 dpad is horrid, as well as the PS3 dpad. However, the analog atleat on the 360 controller is quite nice.
In the end, people will always find something to whine and complain about. Look at me, Im whining and complaining about people who whine and complain about dpads. Its just a wonderful cycle.
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): Oh yeah, I'm right there with you. I even said that it can be both too sensitive and mushy at the same time. It just does what you don't want it to do at times. It's a minor gripe and it's really close to being good but sometimes it makes for a frustrating thing when you are trying to press up and you end up pressing back or sometimes not having the button register at all.
I think there a lot of contradicting reports said on the dpad because it does both at times. Sadly I don't like the Dpad on the PS3 either, but it's not like I have a choice. The Classic controller has the best Dpad this gen but a lot of good that does me when I want to play Street fighter. I just hope they port over the new VS. game.
I think the most complaint is that we feel it is a step down from what was so fluid and perfect from older systems, specifically SNES and Genesis.
Also , I agree that MS won't change it. The Duke controller was widely hated and they fixed that because it would have hurt sales. The Dpad here is just a little pain that can be tolerated. Though I hope they learn for the next system they release.
They could've... but Microsoft wanted to rush things to beat Sony to market. Plus, the had to use lead-free solder to comply with European safety standards. Had they used lead-based solder on the GPU, the RRoD probably wouldn't have happened as often (if at all).
@jorge.bronx: It's certainly the best since Sony entered the market, my friend. Last gen, you got a crappy mini D-Pad on the GameCube controller that was useless. Xbox had the same as now pretty much. The generation before, the N64's D-Pad was not any better than the others, same for PS1 and Saturn. They were equal. It was only before that, that there ever was a D-Pad truly superior to the one used in today's DualShock - the one on the SNES pad.
@Jandlecack: woah woah woah... have you ever used the model 2 saturn pad? To say that it was equal to it's competitors in that generation... actually to say that it's equal to any damn d-pad out, well it's just stupid. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo right now have failed to reach its standards.
I don't get how you say the N64's D-pad was equal to Saturn's and DualShock's... and then say the Super NES's D-pad was superior. They're the same! Nintendo has used the same D-Pad for NES/Super NES/N64. Then had a smaller one for GameCube, and then a normal sized one for Wii (although, it looks slightly different).
I don't know if it's the best controller EVAR, but it was miles above the Genesis controller which would leave dents/blisters on your thumb if you dared play a fighting game.
Really? I wasn't such a fan I found it quite cumbersome.
I don't think there's a best controller ever anyway, just different ones are best for each generation. An Atari joystick is hardly work well with Fable 2 but for Pong and the like it was win.
For me, the 360 controller is the best traditional controller for the current market of games (the dpad plays a smaller role than what it once did), whilst the Dual Shock was best in the PSX/PS2 era.
But, on the issue at hand, I like mods and stuff in the same way I like the 360 Laptop but it's still pretty unneccessary.
If you're going to show a complete disregard for ergonomics and ease with which to use for a long time then yes, the Dualshock just might be the best of the PS1/PS2 era, but otherwise the Gamecube controller is the clear winner here.
@NeoAkira: LMAO... I hope this was a joke. The Gamecube please. Did he ever try to use the Z button.
No the perfect controller would be a blend of the PS3 and 360 controllers. the Analogue Sticks and D-pad off the PS3 and the rest of the controller would be the 360s the ABXY buttons would need to be slightly bigger though.
Considering that most of the time (other than the shoulder buttons) one uses mostly 2 buttons on the right side of the controller, the Gamecube controller's layout and button sizes were perfect.
Troll all you want, but anyone who actually plays videogames rather than just talking about it on a blog knows how good the Gamecube controller is.
01/04/09
Still, to show how much of a hypocrite I am, I will say that I generally only play fighters on the PS3 and shooters on the 360.
01/04/09
More better? Was that a joke, or does this guy not know how to phrase words correctly. Only five year olds say "more better".

I want a better Dpad!

Because a few points on an online game ladder are worth cheapening yourself?

I do play Gears of War 2 online. Lately, I mainly play the Horde mode with a bunch of friends.

Psh. The first problem to solve is how to go about solving problems while bitching about them on the internet!
01/04/09
It does mean that games that use it I tend to shy away from on 360 and go for on PS3. That and I already had a RRoD and my disc drive is going out.
