<![CDATA[The Witcher Enhanced Edition Update Now Available]]> CD Projekt Red's super enhanced edition of their excellent RPG The Witcher should be on its way or indeed on the shelves of a store near you as we speak, but as promised, owners of the original game can now get everything included in the super mega mega version completely free via one hell of a download. The main patch, which includes animation changes, performance tweaks, and generally makes the game better weighs in at 1GB, while grabbing your language pack is another 500MB. Finally there's the bonus pack, which contains new adventures, two CDs worth of music, and the bonus content from the box set, all scrunched up into another 1.5GB worth of data.

Part of me wants to get this started right now. The other part can almost smell the freshly-printed box scent of the retail version. Decisions, decisions.

<![CDATA[FlatOut: Head On PSP Demo Now Available]]> Six by Nine's Flat Out: Head On demo is nox available for your downloading pleasure at the Playstation store for your PSP. The demo contains three game modes: Carnage Race, Deathmatch Derby and a Ragdoll stunt. Here's a little bit about each mode:

In 'Carnage Race' players fight against the clock to score points within the given time period by causing as much damage as possible to their environment and opponents. 'Deathmatch Derby' is an arena-based derby with one simple objective - destroy or be destroyed. And finally, Ragdoll stunts take center stage in 'High Jump,' where players must drive their car down the ramp as fast as possible to launch the driver through the windscreen high into the sky to slam into the metal net.

Sounds like a smashing good time! Anything with the words deathmatch and carnage in it is always intriguing to me. Want it now? Download it here.

<![CDATA[Command & Conquer Gold Free For Download]]> To celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the Command & Conquer franchise, Electronic Arts is offering a FREE download of the original game that started it all, Command and Conquer (Gold Edition). the game is Windows XP compatible and is the same version that came with the Command & Conquer: The First Decade collector's edition. Free downloads are always great but it sounds like there are a few steps to get the thing to actually work. But Kotaku readers are a clever lot and I'm sure you will be able to figure it all out with the help of EA's handy dandy instruction manual available on the site. They also hint at some surprises to come over the next few weeks, so if you are a C&C fan, it looks like September will be a banner month for you.

<![CDATA[Mainichi Issyo Gets A Little More PSP Play]]>
In Japan, a download of Mainichi Issyo on the PS3 means not only the ability to watch news broadcasts with Toro and his pals, but also a little remote PSP play. Sure, it's only for the Japanese, and the "playing" only really involves being able to pamper Toro with food, but it's something. After last week's update for the PSP (which really only allows you to access the content downloaded on or streamed through your PS3), it's a hopeful sign that Playstation is starting to use the technology to, oh I don't know, actually play a game with.

And yes, I used the word "play" in relationship to the Mainichi Issyo download because really, all the playing you can do with a cat is offer it food. Unless you can download a moth for it to catch, but I'm sure Sony's already on it.

<![CDATA[Microsoft: We Pwn Video Downloads]]>

No longer content with kicking ass in the video game sales and downloadable games field, Microsoft shot off a press release today crowing about their successes with downloadable TV shows and movies.

Personally, I think the small size of the 360's harddrive and the slow download speeds make the prospect of downloading movies, especially high-def ones, untenable. But apparently a lot of 360 owners disagree with me.

Here's the tally:
Within four months of launching, Xbox LIVE has become the number one online distributor of television and feature film content in the living room where it's most easy for consumers to access.
In the same four months, the service has quickly become the number two online distributor of television and feature film content, second to iTunes.
Is currently the ONLY online distributor of major feature films and television programming in high definition (HD) resolution.
The service is a breakout success, with double-digit, month-over-month growth since launching.
Monthly downloads from Xbox LIVE went up 400 percent since the service launched in November.

I suppose I should give it another chance. The abortive launch of the service and the resulting loss of time, harddrive space and Microsoft points just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

I love capping FREE, it's so spam.

Major Nelson announced that Crackdown just got a free four-pack of new agent skins for the game. The set includes, he says, one that looks like it's wearing Sam Fisher head gear, but no women. I guess in Crackdown only men deliver mammoth beat-downs and explosions. Too bad.

This freebie is available to every region that gets the game. In other words, not Germany.

<![CDATA[PSP Firmware 3.1 Hits]]> Playstation Portable Firmware update ahoy!

This time around, besides the hidden hack fix, the upgrade includes a way to conserve memory while surfing websites. So if you hit up a porn site, you should be A-OK.
Also, and about as unexciting, the firmware will add dynamic normalizing. In other words you will now be able to have automatic volume adjustment while listening to music tracks.

Yah, so the update is pretty much about their neverending fight against hacks.

They are releasing some new PSP demos as well, which is nice. This time around you can get your hands on Killzone: Liberation, which you should def check out, and SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2 and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror down the line.

Where's my downloadable episodes of LOST Heroes, dammit?

The Andy Milonakis Show
The Nine
The Real Word
The Venture Bros

While I like the selection, I was a little surprised to find that I had to pay $2 whether the show I was downloading was a 44-minute episode of CSI or an 11-minute episode of Robot Chicken. I loves the Robot Chicken, but they're going to have to do something with this across the board pricing for TV shows, it just isn't going to fly.

High-def TV shows are 240 points ($3) and regular def shows are 160 points ($2). High-def movies are 480 points ($6) and regular movies are 320 points ($4). While classic movies (as in old ones) are 360 points ($4.50) in high-def and regular will be 240 points ($3).

Full release after the jump. Expect a impressions later today.

REDMOND, Wash. Nov. 22, 2006 With a robust library of 160 high-definition games expected by holiday, Xbox 360 , the video game and entertainment system from Microsoft Corp., will get even better today. On its one-year anniversary, Xbox 360 will digitally deliver an initial lineup of TV shows and movies to gamers in the U.S. via Xbox Live., the online games and entertainment network from Microsoft.

As announced earlier this month, Xbox Live Marketplace will now provide gamers with easy access to hundreds of full-length TV shows for download to own and movies for download to rent from CBS, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment with more content rolled out through Xbox Live Marketplace every week. Xbox 360 is the first gaming console to offer standard and high-definition TV shows and movies via digital distribution.

Since its launch on Nov. 22, 2005, Xbox 360 has gained impressive traction fast. Xbox 360 was the fastest console to reach 5 million sold, and 6 million Xbox 360 consoles had been sold by the end of September 2006. At least 10 million are expected to be sold by holiday. Expected to be available in 37 countries by holiday, Xbox 360 continues to retain record game and accessory attachment rates, according to NPD. With more than 4 million members and an expected 6 million by June 2007, Xbox Live continues its leadership as the first and most comprehensive online games and entertainment network seamlessly integrated throughout the entire Xbox 360 experience.

Xbox 360 is prepared to have a booming holiday season, with consoles readily available at retail along with a host of new accessories such as the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel, Xbox Live Vision camera and Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, not to mention blockbuster games such as Gears of War and Viva Piqata .

We re exactly where we wanted to be this holiday with Xbox 360 retail stock availability, said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. With an incredible library of games, more than 4 million gamers playing online with Xbox Live, and a growing catalog of high-definition gaming and entertainment content, why would anyone wait in line when you can get a superior experience from Xbox 360 right now?

Examples of the download-to-own TV shows and download-to-rent movies available on the network on Nov. 22 include the following:

CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, NCIS and Star Trek from CBS

Chappelle s Show, Drawn Together and Emmy and Peabody award-winning South Park from COMEDY CENTRAL

Pimp My Ride and Punk d from MTV

Avatar: The Last Airbender and SpongeBob SquarePants from Nickelodeon

Using the Family Settings feature, parents and individuals can choose the video content that can be played on their family s Xbox 360. With the availability of this new entertainment content, gamers now can set controls based on movie, TV and video ratings, or they can entirely block explicit and unrated video content for themselves or their children.

Xbox 360 gamers in the U.S. can access Xbox Live Marketplace with a free Xbox Live Silver subscription or a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription and a broadband connection. Pricing is competitive and will vary based on format, media type and whether the content is a new release movie or a classic feature film. High-definition TV shows will be 240 Microsoft. Points per episode, and standard-definition TV shows will be 160 Microsoft Points per episode. New release movies in high definition will be 480 Microsoft Points, and standard-definition new release movies will be 320 Microsoft Points each. Classic feature films in high definition will be 360 Microsoft Points, and standard definition will be 240 Microsoft Points. After purchasing a high-definition TV show or movie, gamers can download the standard-definition version at no additional charge.

Microsoft Points can be purchased at retail or via Xbox Live. For example, gamers can get a 1,600 Microsoft Points card at retail for $19.99 (U.S.) or 1,000 Microsoft Points through Xbox Live for $12.50 (U.S.). <![CDATA[TV, Movies Hit 360 Tomorrow]]>

Just a reminder: Microsoft launches their download Movie and Television service for the Xbox 360 tomorrow.

This timing is especially good for me, since I just had Comcast come pick up their cable box today. I decided to switch out my box for a card to free up a power-point and input for the TV. I get all of my channels still but no pay-per-view. Enter Microsoft, who will start selling and renting movies and tv shows through the console.

I'll make sure to try out one of each tomorrow and write up my experiences. The most interesting thing to come out of tomorrow's launch is the price point for both shows and movies, which hasn't been officially announced yet.

Too bad you can't transfer shows to the Zune. I happen to be reviewing Msoft's player for the Rocky and was shocked right out of my Chili Pepper socks to discover their otherwise quite adequate online story has absolutely no video content for purchase. What... the... hell?

<![CDATA[Microsoft Getting the Message on Crap Lumines Live!]]>

Finally downloaded Lumines Live!, and it was pretty much like the version on my PSP, but bigger. Thing is, the game on my UMD is a full game, not a crippled download—this all, ironically, has given the PSP and UMD the best press it has had in months!

At E3, Microsoft touted the music video element of Lumines Live!, an element not found in the current half-baked version, but an "Artist Pack" available next year. The initial purchase leaves gamers with a mere 12 skins, five puzzles, five missions and one CPU opponent. Xbox 360 owners are pissed.

Microsoft's Gamerscore blog is running damage control, stating:

The material posted on Xbox.com, and that was sent out in the media alert wasn't detailed enough, and believe me, the message is being heard. When we said 'full version,' we didn't make what that meant clear enough. You are getting all of the 'modes' that are in the game, but the base version includes only some of the skins, puzzles, missions, or CPU opponents. There will be future content you can choose to buy. Just like other games with downloadable content, you can choose what you might enjoy the most, or stick with the base game.

Eh? Isn't that what my PSP is for?

<![CDATA[Sony Launches PSP Download Store in UK]]>

It looks like Sony has rolled out some sort of working download service for the Playstation Portable in the UK. If you visit YourPSP.com's download section in the UK you get dumped into a kinda new interface called the PSP Store. So far the store seems to only feature a bunch of freebies, including movies, demos, music and photos, but its designed to allow you to purchase online downloadable content. Could this be Sony's answer to iTunes? It looks like a workable interface, though it will be hard to judge until it's packed with tons of content you'd actually want to download let alone pay for. Let's hope this is the first step toward television shows making their way onto your PSP without having to record, convert and transfer them.
