One thing I hate about the NPC titles is the box art. If you thought the "Greatest Hits" bar was tacky...imagine the original box art smushed into maybe half the space and surrounded by a big empty WHITE.
When I first saw it on the shelf I thought I was looking at a pre-order box instead of a game.
"The Piklopedia is an in-game list of all the plants and creatures in that you have come into contact with throughout your exploration, from Bulborbs to Wollyhops. The Treasure Hoard lists all the treasures you have collected throughout your quest.
Pikmin 2 also features new Purple and White Pikmin. The Purple Pikmin is super strong, while the white Pikmin is immune to poison and can find hidden treasure."
Without eBaying it, yeah it is. I got one copy in used at my local Gamestop and it went in hours - to me. I bought that shit right quick. :-) Great game.
It's like rocking horse shit, I managed to pick up a copy of pikmin for my girlfriend a while ago but wished I had waited for the new control one. I've never seen 2 second hand and most places have given up selling second hand gamecube games.
I am still looking for a copy of Beyond Good and Evil for a reasonable price.
@Steph2Def: Pikmin 2 is the only game that I've seen Gamestop try to get $40 for as a last-gen used title. When you can even find it.
This is one wiimake that is fully 100% justified. You'll be able to buy it new for less than the used price and get the better controls. Kudos to NIntendo on this one.
@TRT-X: Clearly that's not what JahB meant - I think your Troll Radar is set a little too high. What JahB meant was that re-releasing Pikmin 2 isn't going to appeal to the 'core audience' because they already have it. This re-release is intended to appeal to new players (aka the casual market) who have no idea what the difference is between a red Pikmin and a yellow Pikmin, let alone realise (or care) that it was released to hungry Nintendo fans many, many years ago.
I like the idea of re-introducing the new gamers to gems that they may have missed, but seriously why can they not focus their efforts toward some new game or IP? I loved Pikmin, Pikmin 2 and Mario Tennis but devoting valuable man-power to ports of old games with added waggle seems a bit ridiculous.
I mean, do you think that people would re-buy God of War and God of War 2 if it included new SixAxis controls with no other features of significant value? I know I sure wouldn't. Games live or die by their gameplay; even on the Wii where you can do things not possible on other systems. I think Super Mario Galaxy could be possible on the Gamecube. It's not the motion that makes the game great, it's the amazing gameplay. The motion doesn't hurt the game, but doesn't add anything significant other than the point-to-starbit thingy.
@Gyaruson: Why do people think that a gaming company is only capable of developing one product at a time?
One thing you do NOT do when making software is simply throw more people at it. While more people theoretically means more can get done...it also means more people to have to organize communications with...and more components that inevitably have to be joined together.
The kind of developement effort needed to put out a New Play Control title is likely incredibly small comparred to what's needed to produce a title from the ground up.
These NPC titles will hopefully sell well to Wii owners who never got involved in the GameCube market, which will help provide the funding to support the full-scale new titles.
One could argue that they devoted and wasted the man hours on these games during the GC era and they're repackaging them now in order to make that initial investment. That being said, I'm not buying these. But still, the argument about GoW doesn't count because "everybody" owns a PS2 and played those games. The GC did not fare so well, so some game gems were overlooked.
@Mommar: There's that, and also the part where the Wii is selling to people who have never gamed before.
Longtime gamers may have long since played these titles...but people only hopping on board with the Wii never have.
I give Nintendo credit for not just doing a straight up re-release of the original game...and putting some effort into including the new control scheme (thus making it worth while to people who truly have never played them).
And since they only cost $30, it's not like they're treating these like full on new games.
@Gyaruson: Because the Wii is just a gamecube with a funky controller, so it makes sense to release gamecube games that work with the funky controller.
I'll be picking up Pikmin 2 though, I never had a gamecube myself.
I am not naive enough to believe that a company like Nintendo only has it's hand in one thing at a time - hardly. I also agree that the teams are probably much, much smaller than before. I even said that this is great to reintroduce the Nintendo newcomers into great gems that passed them by, going unnoticed.
BUT, and this is a big 'but', what other news has been trickling down from Nintendo lately? Wii Sports Resort, Motion Plus? Seriously, they remain so tight-lipped all the time it's kind of hard to not feel a little "Yeah, yeah, but what's new that you have to show us?" ya know? I've been a die-hard Nintendo fan forever - I grew up on them. That being said I've already played the crap out of Pikmin 1 & 2, and also Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. It's great for newcomers, but this seems to be all they've talked about for a while. I guess I'm just hoping that E3 will provide more good news than last years. :-/
The same could be said about Gamecube owners. Obviously not all Wii owners were Gamecube owners, but I think the same can be said about PS3 owners. I know a lot of people who just bought/buy that for the Blu-Ray player.
@Gyaruson: Nintendo *is* working on new games, including Zelda and Pikmin 3. Releasing Pikmin 1 and 2 is like releasing all the Indiana Jones movies on DVD right before Crystal Skull (let's hope Pikmin 3 is better than that POS...)
The wii is my first console since my Atari 2600. I welcome the chance to catch up to some of the best games of the last gen (just finished Prince of Persia Sands of Time the other day). I will be receiving Pikmin in the mail pretty soon...
And see, you're the exact person I was saying this system works great for. I'm so happy you played Sands of Time, by the way. I also know that a new Zelda and Pikmin are in the works, but how 'bout some info, even a little, please?
@Gyaruson: This reminds me of people on the RB forums that ask Harmonix for updates on one thing or another on a daily basis.
Be it the status of a patch for a certain issue, or when they can expect certain bands/songs/albums to come down the pipeline.
I hate having to put on "the Cap", but having worked in software for a while, I can tell you this is usually how it works. You are told "A product is coming..." and then you hear nothing more until there's a workable demo/beta/sample to display.
The reasoning? If you start giving out info, it starts to give people a false impression on when it may or may not be ready. So if there are setbacks early in the process, it looks bad.
How is what Nintendo doing any different than some other company throwing out a fully rendered teaser trailer that does nothing but tell you the game is coming? I'd rather they not waste my time with a teaser because 9 times out of 10 it IS all just rendered and does aboslutely nothing to help show what the game will actually be like.
@WoundedBum: NINTENDO JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE RE-RELEASING EVERY GAME THEY"VE EVER SOLD YOU ONCE, SO YOU CAN BUY IT TWICE! LIKE AN IDIOT! now set yourselves on fire.
@Rayk2099: I Belive Jungle Beat was made basicly a traditional sidescrolling platformer. And some levels were added, because the original was fairly short.
I'm excited about these coming out. It makes sense. I never played jungle beat, despite great reviews, because I didn't want to buy the drums just for one game. I didn't get into Metroid 1 and 2 because I don't like FPS shooters unless I can physically point at the target. And, I just didn't end up getting a chance to try Pikmin. If you don't want to get it, then don't. Is there really a need to be fussy?
From Nintendo's business perspective, why not? Ports are relatively cheap to make, and the Wii has a much larger consumer base than the Gamecube did, so there are probably a lot of people out there that haven't played this. On top of that, the games were good enough to probably tempt a lot of people to repurchase them just to try out new controls.
According to a recent figure on Kotaku, Nintendo first-party software has a higher attach rate than Xbox or PS3. Why do Wii haters hold Nintendo singularly responsible for providing the entire game library?
God forbid they release old games with NEWER content, and upgraded in widescreen. OH NOES!
These troll comments are getting really really tiring. Every single Wii article contains them, not involving No More Heroes 2.
THEREZ NO NEW GAMES OUT FOR WII. Same old stuff being said
Whats that? De Blob and Wario Wii were recently released? Oh no! They clearly don't count! They haven't be hyped up to bejesus for months and months and months!
I think everyone is well aware they're could be more great games the on Wii. But theres still loads of great ones.
wow.. i love these comments. i think its popular to hate on nintendo, i wonder if ill have more followers if i said "i sold my wii" and "nintendo keeps remaking the same games over and over!" on every wii post.
i like how out of all the big games this year.. none of them save for dead space, mirrors edge, and little big planet arent tied to a franchise.
lets look at the big games from microsoft and sony's publishing studios lately.. mostly failures and sequels.. especially in msfts camp. besides little big planet, i cant think of one major game published by either sony or msft that isnt a sequel or a below avg jrpg.
What I want to know is if in addition to the new wii controls if they will still allow the old control scheme. I don't have a problem with wiimote controls but a game like donkey kong jungle beat that I never played before(but always wanted to)I would eventually want to try it out on its orignal controls which would be the drums. Games like Pikmin and Metroid prime however, needs no looking back when going to wiimote controls.
@Chadders: Just because you can plug them in doesn't mean that the game will recognize them. I really hope Nintendo leaves that option. It would be a total waste to disable the existing control scheme.
