We'll save you the patriotic one-liners and instead just point out that Cheap Ass Gamer (yeah, we just said "ass") has organized a collection of used, current gen games for the troops in Iraq. The neat part is that after you mail the game(s), the troops will post a picture of themselves with the boxes. It's a nice way that the troops say thanks for us saying thanks for not being the ones in constant danger of bullets, bombs and "sand to butt hole infiltration."

<![CDATA[Lieberman Joins Clinton in Line For Gaming Donations]]> Back in August, 2005 I broke the story that ESA president Doug Lowenstein and Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music for Electronic Arts were co-hosting an intimate $1,000-a-plate affair to raise money for the Friends of Hillary Clinton.

The breakfast, set at a posh D.C. hotel, happened just two months to the day after Clinton took the video game industry to task for "stealing the innocence of our children" and called for a federal investigation into the discovery of hidden sex in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Now it looks like her pal Joe Lieberman, a fellow video game naysayer, has also been caught with his hand in the video game till.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Lieberman received about $73,000 from a variety of entertainment industry sources over the past two years, including Microsoft and Sony.

Asked why he accepted their money, Lieberman first joked, "I really don't get anything [contributions] from that industry."

And, he added, taking the donations "obviously doesn't affect my behavior, and the system allows for anyone who wants to see what I get to view all the donations."

Oh... that money!

<![CDATA[Get-Well Gamers Foundation]]>

The Get-Well Gamers Foundation is a California charity that, similar to Penny Arcade's Child's Play drive, provides games and consoles to children facing long-term hospitalization. From the press release:

Our next step is to see to it that we have the product donations to support our new increased capacity. At the moment, we have nowhere near what is required, but given our track record of success, we are confident that someone will answer the call. With the holidays fast approaching, however, it is crucial that we receive donations as soon as possible.

Jackasses would like you to forget that video games are a proven pain-management tool that are being used in therapy for all kinds of conditions. If you have owned more than one generation of game machine, you probably have some old consoles or carts hanging around that you could do without. Sending them to Get-Well Gamers is a good way to unclutter and score some good karma all at the same time.

Keep your classics, as they're only accepting gear from 1989 and later. A list of hospitals, FAQs, and donation locations is available on the Get-Well Gamers website.

<![CDATA[Penny Arcade Donates Original Art to Katrina Fund]]>

The talented duo over at Penny Arcade have donated some original Penny Arcade art to the Red Cross. The original pencil drawing that was used for the cover of the Penny Arcade Expo this year is up for sale on eBay with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Red Cross. The 8.5 by 11-inch drawning also comes with a high quality color print of the final program cover. Both items are signed by Tycho and Gabe.

Last I checked the bid was at $1,575. Go spend money for a good cause.

<![CDATA[Everquest 2 Calls for Katrina Donations]]> eq2.jpg

In an incredibly thoughtful move, Sony has added the /donate command to Everquest 2. Typing it in while playing the massively multiplayer game jumps you straight to the Red Cross s Hurricane 2005 relief page where you can make donations. Sony goes on to say that they estimate that 13,000 of their players were effected by Katrinia and that they will be suspending their accounts until they can play again.

Sony wraps up by saying that effected gamers items will be preserved until they logon again, meaning their digital houses won t erode or decay.

If you hear of any other game-related Katrina fund-raisers, let me know and I'll try to post an item about it.

The Navy needs you to donate video games. The Naval Medical Center in San Diego is trying to find someone willing to donate a mass of game consoles, cordless controllers and video games to help entertain recuperating Marines. Many of the Marines at the hospital are recovering from injuries they received in Fallujah. Help a brother out, email Kohnhe Communications and they will get you in touch with the right people.
