Picking this up, I thought this movie was pretty good. I think what made it the success it was, was the fact that it was really well made on such a low budget. Added to my blu-ray collection. #ps3
Why would anyone think it's Gears of War? It's on a Blu-Ray disc... What would you do with it? I've seen like 4 people think it was Gears. Made me lol.
@SocraticMethod: I agree. I've posted my reason for this on imdb but just to rehash my thoughts:
"I really had high hopes coming into the movie but was left vaguely disappointed. I think my biggest issue wasn't the silly acting, the inconsistencies, or the poorly written dialogue. What really disappointed me was how the director trivialized an inherently disturbing issue (apartheid) with giant mechs and alien butt sex. I'm all for outlandishness (as is often the case with sci-fi movies, the suspension of belief is a must) but what this movie lacks is any substance. I felt no connection to the characters, I didn't feel the weight of the deeper, more fundamental issue (although I recognized them for what they were- who couldn't?) and yet my deepest qualm with the film wasn't that it was unrealistic, but that it slowly devolved into a monty-pythonesque parody of a deeper issue it so desperately wants us to take seriously. All in all, it was an okay film by a first time director but it shows, the film was amateur at best. I would give it a 7/10 and I would definitely see more from Blomkamp as he could only get better. However, I can't help but feel his first time out would have been better served directing the Halo movie."
In my opinion, I thought Inglourious Basterds and Moon were much stronger movies than District 9. Bill Murray, however, takes my pick for best acting this year for his role in Zombieland. #ps3
@NeVeRMoRe666: I agree with everything you said (especially regarding them trying way too hard to take the issues seriously), but I didn't even enjoy it. At all. The film starts off boring (like 20 minutes of an episode of COPS with aliens as the perps), but got into outlandish antics that even allusions to real social issues could not help make more enjoyable. You said it perfectly about it being a monty python-esque parody of deeper issues. However, I thought the worst part was the atrocious dialogue. The dialogue alone is worth saying this film is not very good, let alone Oscar worthy (god forbid).
Inglorious Basterds and Moon were light years ahead of this movie in all aspects. It's too bad Moon will probably be overshadowed for anything and most people haven't even heard of it. #ps3
God of War? Really? don't use "GOW" unless its Gears of War lol. Getting me all excited over some crap game. Still buying it though this movie was great. #ps3
i guess im the only one who hated this movie? i walked out. it also IRONICALLY was fairly racist.
but w/ all that said. District 9 was a much better move than Halo would have been. and there were a few neat ideas burried in the garbage pile of a movie that is District 9. #ps3
@deanbmmv: how they portrayed the Nigerians as savages who are willing to eat and have sex with the aliens thus becoming subhuman. I to hated this movie, not what i expected. The main character was obnoxiously annoying, Its beyond me how someone can call this a "must see". #ps3
@JJBro1: Your the one calling having interracial sex sub-human.
The eating of an enemy to gain its power is a common tribal act.
Also be aware that Blonkampf actually lives in Johannesburg. Many of the cast were hired form Johannesburg.
So ever thought that the movie was actually portraying a twist on what South Africa is actually like? #ps3
@JJBro1: You do realize that part of the reason Africa is so fucked up right now is because of people that behave the way they are portrayed in that movie, right?

@tok1879: Uh, are you dense? Of course aliens are real. They couldn't possibly be symbolic of something else. I'll go away as long as you go back to school, kay? #ps3
@Sir-Lucius does anything for Dethklok: So i take it you're not slow then? So can you kindly enlighten us the unfortunate dense ones with information on how having sex with aliens could actually be symbolic of anything since you seemed so certain you knew what the fuck you were talking about when you so eloquently stated that "the reason Africa is so fucked up right now is because of people that behave the way they are portrayed in that movie." #ps3
@tok1879: Do you really need me to describe the warring states of Africa? You haven't heard about the corrupt governments, the bands of warlords that brutally rape and murder and turn children into soldiers? The various race battles that go on throughout the country? Or the fact that Africa is continually raped of its natural resources because there are large groups of "people" that thrive on chaos and war and keep the general populous in a state of terror?
District 9 was an allegory for the apartheid that occurred in South Africa. This isn't me making it up, this is Blomkamp saying as much. I'm not gonna sit here and lecture you on one of the most well known human rights violations of recent times. There is plenty of information on it all over the web. #ps3
@deanbmmv: its late but ill try to remember most of it.
lets start w/ humans (for the most part) = white people, and aliens = black people. im tired of this metaphor. by reinforcing the idea that black people are monsters or its difficult to relate to them we take a major step backwards!
the aliens are in danger. the only entity that can save them is a white man. why not have the fucking aliens save themselves if this is some big racial metaphor?!
the aliens (black people) are stupid and savage. iirc the only one that wasnt was the one who behaved like a white man! #ps3
@Sir-Lucius does anything for Dethklok: Dude, nobody asked you to lecture on the state of things in Africa. I'm only asking for the correlation you see between the reality in Africa and aliens having sex with Nigerians(not all humans) who were discriminated against just as much as the aliens in the movie.
I think this is a situation where you're seeing things that are not there. Yes i agree that some of the stuff in the movie were truly meant to be symbolic, but to retort after someone took offense to the particular way Nigerians were portrayed with that flimsy comment just shone a light to your masked ignorance. #ps3
I don't know what's more annoying: People who think District 9 was the result of a failed Halo movie or the fact that people have never even seen of heard of 'Alive in Joburg', which was what District 9 was inspired by.
Just because Blomkamp and Jackson were supposed to work on the Halo movie doesn't mean that District 9 had anything to do with it. It was only a matter of time before they turned Alive In Joburg into a full-length film anyway. #ps3
I have seen that short, but I don't think it's annoying at all that people have never seen it. Just because some people aren't hardcore fans, doesn't make them annoying. #ps3
@Dangerwillrobinson: Well, the typical movie-goers aren't annoying, just the fact that most gamers or nerds can't mention District 9 without having to add Halo into it is annoying.
hodayathink: Better luck next year promoted this comment

Demo's are promotional material. This is like selling a movie trailer yet people eat this shit up with a smile on their face. It's like the "Commit to buy a game at Gamestop and play the demo before everyone else". Seriously have we gotten so dumb that corporations can sell us glorified advertisements? #ps3
Oh any news if this will be on all Blu-Ray versions of District 9?
Or is it just going to be limited to NA like all ways?
Loving the fact I found out theres a Directors version of Watchmen. Only in NA. hoorah #ps3
@chamoo232: Actually NA is the wrong term, but for a different reason.
Thats cos its America as a whole.
Canada is part of Region A, you can get the same Blu-rays as US,South America, and Japan and some odds n sods.
Europe/Africa/Australia get Region B and Asia in Region C. #ps3
@deanbmmv: but we often end up with different dvds than the US even if they are both region 1 due to canada having 2 official language. french and english. a good exemple of how canada can have different stuff is that recent problem with fallout 3 game of the year not compatible with the normal fallout3 for canada. we would expect that it would be the exact same game and disc but it seems there is a difference. #ps3
@chamoo232: You may have the diffrent discs sold there, but you can buy and play US sold discs in your Blu-Ray player. They are compatible. Europe can't. Don't have the option.
Which means I cant buy and watch the Directors Cut of Watchmen. and I'm not rebuying it. Kinda annoying (cos both went on sale at the same time, but for an arbitrary reason it wasn't sold in Europe) #ps3
@deanbmmv: with the $ conversion and the taxes and shipping it's really not worth getting a blu-ray from a US retailer for me. I do hope we get the god of war demo too but I dont plan on getting a movie to get a demo. #ps3
