Somehow I think Churchill meant his phrase to be taken in context, not applied to any and every little personal cause you choose to apply it to.
And personally, as much time-wasting as it may have caused, it probably would've shut him up a bit more if the appeal was heard and then utterly demolished in the course of that appeal rather than stopped before it had a chance to begin. That'll make him feel cheated, and then he'll try everything to get himself heard again, yadda yadda.
Wasting the time of the Supreme Court and taxpayers' money to make Jack Thompson feel better does not seem like a great trade off to me. He asked for a writ of certiorari, and if it had been granted it would've made our judicial system look silly, and made Jack Thompson seem like someone with a valid argument.
@Kynes: You mean look silly like beeing able to sue a company cause the coffee in one of their shops was to hot, or that no one told you that you shouldn't dry your pets in the microwave or that you can sue someone when you broke in their house to steal and did hurt yourself during that criminal act?
Don't get me wrong here, i absolutely have no intention to flame your country and stuff, but the reputation on that one is already quite a bite damaged. Well and then there is that one Prison on the corner of an small country. I know it is supposed to getting fixed rigth now...but even without that i do not know if it is really necessary to it get more worse than the reputation is already and rigth now.
@fELIXADER: Disbarring Jack Thompson was a very small step in the right direction. Along with revoking the judges status that tried to sue the dry cleaner over 1 million for loosing his pants....but yes...the system is still completely flawed in many ways.
@velvet396: Exactly! Which is why I think this letter is bogus, and he is just pandering to Kotaku for attention. He knows anything he does will be posted here as factual, won't be vetted, and be thoroughly commented on. Surely he's not stupid enough to have actually written THAT on letterhead to a Chief Justice.
I wish the gaming press would just stop giving this douche bag ink. He always WAS insignificant, and he always WILL BE insignificant. He only caters to Kotaku because Kotaku has repeatedly shown some sort of twisted Jack Thompson/Michael Pachter-fetish, as if these two nitwits actually have any REAL influence on the gaming industry!
Exactly! Which is why I think this letter is bogus...
Bad grammer and childishness does not mean it's bogus. That's just par for the course for Thompson. Seriously, read some of his lawsuits. They are the most inane tripe I've ever read.
Personally I think Thompson is encroaching on the "Tyson Zone." The Tyson Zone is defined by Bill Simmons as the place where people get to that no matter what happens to them, you won't be even remotely surprised. Jack Thompson could jump out of a truck going 50+ down the washington beltway, holding sparklers and screaming an obscenity, and I don't think I'd even bat an eye.
Other Tyson Zone occupants? Ross Perot, Britney Spears, and Mike Tyson, of course...I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now.
"Say what you will about the man, but I'm damn sure I don't have enough money in my bank account to cover that sort of change."
The amount of money a person has does not affect my impression of them.
Jack Thompson is a severely disturbed man, and I believe we should all stop feeding into his narcissistic ways.
Why did he send this message to you? Because he knew you wouldn't resist posting about it on the blog, so he can see your and everyone else's comments.
@MaxSteele: Kotaku is in the business of posting news. As our community's most prominent opponent (even if a comically inept, arch-bungling opponent), Thompson is always news. What's the saying... keep your friends close and your enemies closer? It applies here, too. You pay attention to the world around you-- and Thompson accepting the decision of the Florida Supreme Court and complying with their order to make restitution is a big deal. It shows that perhaps, to crib from history, our long national nightmare is over.
@bluebuju: That's called having a sense of humour, though it could also be filed under not taking yourself too seriously. Both of which you should give a go. :)
Why do you continue to put this man in the spotlight? And how is it news that he hasn't paid for his bar tab? I thought we'd seen the last of him, but it appears that Jack Thompson strikes again!
@armchairnixon: Well, it's news because seeing this Thompson-as-hopeless-crusading-lawyer era come to a close is going to have a definite impact on our community. And this story-- about how Thompson is complying with the order of the Florida Supreme Court-- is actually pretty good for us. No more 'Picture Books For Adults', no more grandstanding, no more apoplectic television appearances on The Loop... we turn a slight corner toward respectability when Thompson fades to black.
PS This isn't about him NOT paying his tab. This is about him paying the money he was ordered to pay. The courts haven't yet moved on the check Thompson cut, and he's seeking clarification. Maybe more reading comprehension, less knee-jerk reaction? Cheers!

I think Churchill would probably bitch slap Thompson for even mentioning his name at all.
