Not a hell of an impressive list at this point. I realize there's some backwards compatibility built-in to DX11, but I'm going to wait for at least SP1 to get Windows 7 (at the moment, Vista is festering on my hard drive, feasting on my resources like a glutton). #directx11
I just built my new computer, but I decided against an early model DX11 card. Got a Radeon 4890 instead and it's amazing so far.
AMD Phenom Quad Core @ 3.4Ghz
ASUS RoG Crosshair III motherboard
8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 ram
ATI Radeon 4890 256-bit 1GB DDR5
1.5TB 7200rpm Hard Drive (x2)
23" Samsung monitor @ 2048x1152
Also have a very nice X-Fi PCI-E sound card and a Zalman heatsink/cooler. So far I haven't found a game I can't run on max settings at 2048x1152. I have yet to run Crysis though. I hear that's the benchmark, so I should probably give that a shot. #directx11
@serotoninzero: Your PC should be able to spit out Crysis pretty cleanly, but I am confused as to why you're not running your DDR3 (which is triple-channel RAM) in threes? Assuming you're running the PHII 965 in there, I'd say grab a third stick of RAM, and watch your PC take advantage of improved bandwidth (although slightly poorer latency)... #directx11
I barely noticed games that took full advantage of DX10, and now there already moving onto DX11. I can't keep up with the new graphics cards now, my old 7950GX2 seems to play the occasional game I throw at it just fine.
Not to mention games like Crysis whree you could almost enable DX10 effects under DX9 with a simple number change. I really haven't seen the progression or need for the new versions recently. #directx11
@SystmOvrload: DX11 should have been what DX10 was. Same rules applies for Win7 should have been when Vista came out.
It's a love/hate relationship with technology.
I sooo miss OpenGL support in most games. Hate/love DirectX because of easy use but monopolized the PC API standards and yet never had a big problem with OpenGL.
I blame you the game programmers or whoever in charge to only use DX!!!!
@Zelmor: Same here. I've used it in the short time I had Vista on my system but back then, the improvements over DX9 weren't all that much.
I'm planning an upgrade to W7 sometime in the near future though and I'll probably pick myself up a DX11 card once some lower-end cards come out but for now, I'm fine playing in DX9. #directx11
Must be an update to LoTR Online, I'm guessing. Some great games on that list, hopefully I'll have finished rebuilding to take advantage of some of the new DX11 games. #directx11
@BrighamCabarn: I know it's a DX10 exclusive game that can't be played on DX9 systems but I don't know if it has any DX11 support. Someone else may know though. #directx11
That is a remarkably small and unimpressive list. To be honest I'm surprised that there isnt more effort by Microsoft to identify and work closely with a variety of engine-builders to give them features they need / want as part of the latest DirectX revisions.
If for nothing else this will allow DirectX to evolve into a scheme that is most beneficial for the development of truly phenominal next-generation technology for the next Xbox #directx11
@Qhue: The list of games compatible with Direct X versions is always fairly small initially. Think of it like the launch lineup for a console. It's small at first but as more people move to it, it gains more support from developers.
Right now, it doesn't make sense to focus on DX11 for a lot of developers as it means extra development time. #directx11
@-MasterDex-: Yep; You also have to remember that DX11 just came out, it takes years to develop a game and its pretty hard to just say "Okay we're going with DX11" when you are almost done creating the game.
In other words, if you're planning on getting a new Graphics card; wait until the HD 5850 or HD 5870 drop down to the $150-$200 range before committing to a purchase. Or wait for the GeForce 300-series (Q1 2010).
Otherwise, the HD 4870, HD 4890 and GTX 260 are your best bet for excellent 1920x1200 performance. #directx11
@Mromson: My advice would be hold off until the fall of next year if you don't want to spend too much. By then there should be a good range of cards to choose from. #directx11
Hmmm a Genghis Khan MMO eh. That sounds quite interesting actually. I wonder how they will approach an MMO based on actual history. Or perhaps they will take the name and nothing else and turn it into another fantasy type MMO.
Be very interesting to see a game , an mmo especially, with an actual historic setting. Perhaps we will start learning something from our games. I'm not really a fan of MMo's in general but if it approaches the history aspect of Genghis Khan I might be willing to fork out some coinage for a few months play.
I need to look into this game apparently :) #directx11
Sure they support DirectX 11, but how many actual use any of the features DirectX 11 brings? Will we be getting tessellation? Will we get displacement mapping instead of just normal/parallax maps? #directx11
@Yiffy Curry: In 2012 when they're rolling out DirectX 12. Right about that time is when DX11 will be in mid range PCs. For now DX11 will just be used for the shinier version for oohs and ahs.
Like a model that just stands there being pretty in a swim suit because she has no other talents except to be the butt of a sexist joke.
Don't worry. Guys have a version of that. They're much less known though. The incredibly rare straight camera man for porn. They're rare though. I'll trade you three football players for it. I need one for my collection. #directx11
@Black-Dog-Howls: You are not exactly right. The thing with DX11 is that it is basically an improved DX10 as far as features go, and generally improves GPU performance, even in DX10-mode games. The leap from 10 to 11 is by far not as huge as from 9 to 10. Think of it as the jump from Vista to Win7. The core stays the same, it's just more stable, faster, and has some added shinies.
@MrMighty: DX9 is still the base platform, not DX10. As Windows7 is the platform to upgrade to, DX11 goes with it, that's what'll be in mid-range PCs by 2011/2012.
That's what I was referring to. That DX11 is just the shiny until everyone can get it then things will be truly optimized for it. #directx11
Lets face it. Its Direct X. Direct X is all about the graphics and nothing more.
And its a PC version. I mean the whole reason people get the PC version of games is to get the better graphics, higher resolutions, effects, etc, that the underpowered consoles cant compete with. (and sometimes because people like to play with keyboard/mouse and dedicated servers) #dirt2
Like i said: The visual quality usually doesn't increase by huge leaps anymore. At least not in todays age and not 5 years ago not even really 10 years ago.
20 years ago is another story..
But today it's more about the small changes, it's next to impossible to throw out a complete new engine that "WOW"'s everybody. #dirt2

DX11 is a different way of implementing almost all the same rendering techiques, with just a few effect differences.
The most effective change in graphic rendering was shader models. Not the dx versions. #directx11
