Good to see Media Molecule on the list so soon though...also, Masahiro Sakurai's SORA Ltd. is already on there? I guess those guys REALLY liked Brawl.

Anyway, it's a bit sad how SE is doing. I've liked most of their recent releases, but despite new IPs, they end up making more on nostalgia-buys from their FF remakes.
If only FFXI was as smooth, solo-friendly, and balanced as WoW. I know WoW isn't perfect, but they mostly know what they're doing.

Square's like a deaf person wearing a blindfold trying to hit a pinata this generation. The few times they DO hit the damn thing, they don't realize it so they keep swinging randomly.
Seriously, their downfall has been painful to watch, but at the same time they totally deserve it for their constant string of stupid, stupid, stupid decisions.

I don't know, I don't even know if they've DONE this list before, but last gen and during the PS1 era, when they were THE developer to beat, they were likely quite high up. Easily in the top 10. It's only over the past few years that Western developers have really started to explode in terms of mass popularity. Before then they were mostly relegated to the PC sphere.
Sometimes I wish they just stayed there. =/

losing market to KONAMI? heck they havent released any proper high selling next game except MGS4...It should be CAPCOM who is the king of next gen as a Japanese developer. Their games sell millions!

Namco Bandai is the top-ranked Japanese third party developer. Followed, deservingly, by Capcom, then Konami, and Square Enix beneath them. Square's sales in Japan last year were pathetic; Dissidia alone made up almost 1/3 of their total, and it came out in DECEMBER.
Meanwhile Konami released one of their biggest games in a long time with MGS4, as well as smaller titles like Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and the new PES game.

It really bothers me because while I think both developers can be just as goodm I've always found the Japanese devs being more imaginative. Whereas Western devs seem to want to always be anchored in reality. Though maybe I'm just thinking too much in terms of games like Fallout and all those World War II FPSes.
I guess I'm just worried about games losing that unique Japanese touch, as much as people might scoff at me for saying this. I think they've always had something unique to bring to the table, even if nowadays all Japanese-made games seem the same to people (which I really think is overblown).
tl;dr short - I feel like games in terms of variety are slowly changing from a veritable rainbow of colors to a few shades of gray. Call me a weeaboo or whatever, but that's just how I see things.

I agree entirely. The heart and soul of the industry has come from Japan for the longest time, and I think that's still true even now; Nintendo's continued success is a testament to this.
People can go 'LOLZANIME' all they want, but without games like Final Fantasy, Mario, or Street Fighter, the industry would not be where it is now. And if things continue to go as they are, then there won't be much industry left after a few more years.

It's just a shame that SE are slower than ever at putting games out into the market, but you never know now that they have Edios under their wing. And not to mention the up&coming Rapture~

Somehow, I don't see Eidos, a studio that hasn't released a single decent game this entire generation, helping them much.

GG Blizzard, even though I have yet to play any of your games.
