As far as Halloween events go... this is pretty badass. WoW's Halloween stuff leaves me out in the cold- sure, the Hallowed Horseman and how he speaks in verse is neat, but overall, it's pretty lame. Wish we could get rampant werewolf disease. #championsonline

As a Star Wars fan since before I was born (no, really! my mom saw the first movie when she was pregnant with me) and a current WoW addict, I really want to be excited about this game.
I have no doubt that the story, acting, and depth of the game universe will be top-notch, because this is BioWare and Star Wars that we're talking about.
My one concern, and the big thing I want to know about, is gameplay. Since this is an MMO, I don't want something that's all story and no action. Actually playing the game needs to be as fun as watching the story unfold. If they can nail that, then I will be there on day one, breaking the promise that I made to myself to never get sucked into another MMO.
@ach77: Amen on all accounts. I am also a WoW addict/Star Wars fan, and certain of BioWare's skill in writing, acting, and creating universes, combined with the excellent existing lore of the Star Wars 'verse. But they seem incredibly wary about showing us actual gameplay... which, in turn, makes me very nervous.
I'm in a slightly different position than you- I actually am looking for another MMO. I love WoW, but I started playing because my IRL friends did... and my IRL friends are getting tired. If we find a decent alternative, they will move on, and I will follow. These days, it's the only way we get to see each other (I had to move), so having a good MMO to play together is crucial. And frankly, I'd like to have some idea if ToR plays decently before I sink the cash into a new WoW expansion, which will almost certainly be released before ToR will.

I realize this borders on Off Topic, but who keeps relatively up to date on Star Wars novels? I am currently reading OUtcast where (SPOILERS written backwards so your mind doesn't read it by accident) .ssenisub oloS necaJ eht revo dehsinab si ekuL(END SPOILERS)
@iam118: If you're going to read a Karen Traviss book, go straight for the good stuff. Republic Commando is fantastic, and has the only Star Wars characters I've cared about since Chewbacca died (Why in the fuck did they kill Chewie? Han should have died, it would have finished the storyarc better.)
@ThisDudeRufus: From what I have heard Lucas said they could not kill anyone with a speaking role. They decided growling/roars didn't count, or some such.
I guess I just don't see the point of all the voice work. At first I thought it would restrict the amount of text, but seems it won't which is nice. But I still find it odd that they would go out of the way to voice the entire script. We're not illiterate after all.
You know, this sort of effort really is inspiring.
I am thoroughly sick of every other company out there trying to compete on equal footing with World of Warcraft. If someone really wants to knock it off its perch (or at least rattle the nest) they're going to have to take those hard but necessary steps to start redefining the "massive" genre.
And yes, one way of doing that, is by starting to blur the line between quality we get from games, and the quality we expect from our other sources of entertainment, like movies. I am actually quite stumped it has taken this long (maybe our data formats are to blame) to realise that the next step in immersing gamers, is to do away with the in-game-novels forced down our throats, and start actually selling the story in a voice-driven, believable way.
That's one of WoW's biggest shortcomings, and people have been saying it since day 1. So all the power to BioWare for identifying what we want next; they're fast becoming my most respected developer.
@Nobuyuki:
All in full voice overs, which hasn't been doen before in an MMO. I can't wait for this title, I've been lurking on their official forums for almost a year now.
I still don't understand why they won't just offer a single-player mode without subscription fees for this game if the story's as important as they say it is and the multiplayer part isn't even that major, with the NPC-controlled allies and all.
Every time they talk about this game, it's like they're taunting the fans of the original KotOR. It really hurts. :[
@Archaotic: That is an issue I've been thinking about. Many of these supposed MMOs could really be great single-player games with a slight adjustments to make parties unnecessary. You've got the characters, items, world, dungeons, weapons...etc., the only problem is that the players are intentionally kept too weak to accomplish some of it on their own. Remedy that and you've got some really epic single-player games easily.
Though I do suppose these developers don't want to surrender the potential fortunes they can make off of monthly subscriptions that currently only MMO can command. But I would eagerly pay a monthly subscription for an epic single-player RPG that received constant developer support and content additions.
I imagine they're just holding out on the big multi-player details and have some good stuff in store.
Like, what about epic wars that involve everyone fighting to defend or assault a base or temple or something. War events could be cool, provided the servers don't explode.
@Archaotic: If I recall, wasn't it Everquest 1 that had a "Demo Download" of the first 5 levels of a character that was basically a glorified single-player experience? It was a small chunk of the game that you could go through while waiting for the rest of the game itself to download, and once you finished all of the "tutorial quests" you could jump into Freeport (or wherever) with that same character.
The way the game itself is reading, it's sounding very similar to the setup Turbine hsa done with their LotRO gameplay, setting things up in a "book format" and several Single-Player instances that players would go through to immerse themselves in the storyline. It may be a taunt for KotOR players whom still want a single-player experience, but in all honesty it sounds like they could (and should) expand upon it with this.
I was going to add that if this succeeds we may see a third in the series...but if Blizzard has shown us anything, if this works they're going to devote a lot of their manpower behind it.
@Qhue: That's the funny part, though. With subscription fees and hefty PC hardware requirements (and of course no Mac version)...I won't. Too bad for LucasArts.
@AncientUnknown1: That's exactly what it is. They're in it for the subscription fees.
@Archaotic: A large part of MMOs is the fact that your character is simply one of thousands in an existing world. It's just not something you can replicate in a single player experience. I also think group gameplay is still going to be an important factor, but adding NPC party members simply allows you to avoid FFXI/EQ syndrome, where you're left unable to play a majority of the game because you're unable to find anyone available to group with at the time you may be playing.
All-in-all, it's a fitting formula and one that works for an MMO. You simply can't recreate the same "feel" of the game by making it single player (Ask anyone who's played WoW on a private server that can do everything by themselves. It's just not the same).
@Tenshigure: From here, its most similar to Funcom's Age of Conan, at least the Tortage section, which has a detailed storyline and several singleplayer sections, but is paired up with typical MMO segments. It can work. Tortage is a lot of fun. Funcom couldn't/didn't make the entire game like that, but a company with the resources and time of Bioware possibly could.
The problem comes when playing Tortage as a different class. There is a different story for each archetype, but if I want to play a Conquerer then a Guardian its the same thing. I am sure Bioware is aware.
@Kanji08: The problem is, though, LucasArts and Bioware are going out of their way to point out that this is essentially a single player game, but played online. You have NPC buddies following you around, there aren't raids. It's a single player game with subscription fees.
@The Amazing Exploding-Man: Which is exactly why I'm wondering why they don't just have an offline mode for people who don't want to pay subscription fees or deal with idiots.
@Archaotic: One could argue that these features are being touted the same way Blizzard likes to rave about their casual features in WoW - to bring in more people to the game. Going back to my example of playing WoW on a private server: You can very easily play the game on your own, accomplish all the major goals by yourself, and even bump your stats up to solo raid bosses, but it's just not the same game when you're by yourself.
Communites are the most important factor in MMOs. Without them, the game just doesn't work. If the game is modeled around that structure, I see no way it could be reduced to a single player experience and still be viable. Additionally, the scale of MMO worlds is something that just doesn't work in a single player game. Can you imagine multiple zones in a single player game with nothing going on in them? Every area would feel like the Forbidden Lands in SotC - both in size and solitude.
Ultimately, I guess we'll just see when the game finally releases. While I can't say I've been following details of it with a microscope, I generally try to keep tabs on MMOs that interest me; And from what I've seen, it doesn't come off as a single player game molded into an MMO for the sake of subscription fees. I get more of a WoW-esqe, "Look how casual our game is! We're not a hardcore MMO grindfest! Don't you wanna play our game!?" vibe from it.
@Kanji08: I just don't see the point in paying a subscription fee for a story-based MMO that is clearly designed to be played solo. I don't want to interact with other people. I don't PVP. I don't want to do raids. I want the story. Nothing else.
And yet LucasArts wants to charge me $15 a month so I can grind to see it? Why not just offer a "solo mode" that doesn't include any community features or online stuff and just lets you play alone, with no subscription cost? Seriously, I can't be the only person who thinks this is a good idea.
@Archaotic: You can't box up KOTOR 3-10 (if their marketing is true) for $60. They are undoubtedly spending at least $100 million on this game. Games with that sort of budget and scale can't be built and then thrown on the shelf with a one month sales window before Amazon is pushing them on Gold Box for $39.99.
They are emphasizing the singleplayer stuff now because most people like to play MMOs solo. There are more ways to play with other folks than raids (most people don't raid). And of course the value of these interactions is how the game will live or die. If its just good as a singleplayer RPG - even if I go through the game as a few characters, thats only a few hundred hours probably, good for several months of subs. So clearly there is more to this here.
I myself am intrigued at the idea of playing a fast, fluid MMORPG, without the cruddy BS that developers use to slow down progression and keep you subbing in other games.
@Mokon: Why even MAKE a game of this scope though? Why bother? Why not just MAKE KotOR 3 through 10 as normal games instead of using the scope of the game as an excuse to justify the budget and the bullshit subscription fees?
They're just trying to get us to subscribe, and then it'll be the same as every MMO out there. Nothing will change.
@octalass: Well, there's the problem. I don't want an MMO. I want a real RPG. I, and plenty of other fans, feel pretty betrayed by this business decision that feels to be motivated purely by a desire for cash, rather than a desire to honor the franchise they're essentially murdering on the altar of the $15 a month subscription fee.
@Archaotic: You aren't, trust me. If LA and Bioware would drop the subscription fees and add single player offline, I think A LOT of people on the fence about the game would change their tune real fast.
I'm still incredibly bitter that they're making an MMO instead of KOTOR III, but if they added those things, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
@Erode: Exactly. I would buy it day one as long as they gave us the option to play it offine and in single-player.
IN FACT, I would be more likely to try out the subscription mode if there was a free mode for me to play. I've been burned too many times by subscription-based MMOs. At least having the single player game would get it into my house; then maybe I'd give it a look after beating the main story. As it stands though, they get nothing.
@Archaotic: Bioware has said, at e3 i think, that you are able to turn off all the chat boxes and things if you just want to solo and not deal with the people.
As for the emphasis on the single player stuff, they have acknowledged that that has been the focus of all the early info. They do need to shore up their base, if you will (their single player fans, &c).
But for all that, they've tried to assure all the mmo gamers that they will have raids, and auctions and all the multiplayer stuff that usually goes with an mmo.
sorry, what im trying to get at is this: i've never played an mmo, and i'm not super excited about that whole aspect. but playing through 10 kotors (probably twice) with the option to dip my toes into the mmo waters or just play with real life friends in other cities, or just shut that all out and play by my lonesome? probably worth it. unless they bone it.
@Archaotic: Because making the game sub based is what makes it possible. There is no guarantee that we would have had KOTOR3 had this not been made. Bioware didn't even do KOTOR2.
I really don't see what the point of your whining is. It's an MMO. The game was designed as an MMO and budgeted as an MMO and it is being developed as an MMO. That's all there is to it. If you don't want to play an MMO this game won't appeal to you.
There's also nothing to be betrayed about. There's nothing to murder, there hasn't been a KOTOR in 5 years. They can do whatever they want with it.
If you enjoy the game, $15 a month to play it and get continued development is peanuts. If not... it's not for you.
@sereal: As I've mentioned before, my Windows hard drive is completely dead, and I lack the money to buy a new one right now, since I'm currently about to be homeless.
@downlobot: I don't want to "turn off" the online stuff. I want to NOT HAVE IT AROUND AT ALL. I don't want to pay a subscription fee to solo. That's the point. I'm not going to play with other people. I see no point in paying a subscription if I'm not making use of the online features at all, but BioWare seems to think it's essential rather than just letting players have an "offline mode" that lets them play without subs. Like Phantasy Star Online does.
@Archaotic: On the plus side, they haven't finalized payment options yet. I do realize how stupid it is for me to hope that it won't be a subscription (I'd happily pay per class, per character, hell I'd even pay a docking fee whenever I land on a planet).
I am curious, if you don't mind, could you explain how the offline phantasy star works? How much is missing from the game? Do you still get updates/patches?
There better be a skip audio key. They may take pride in having 40 novels worth of VO, but I don't want to have to listen to 40 novels just to go kill some wookies.
@Malfunktion v2: I wouldn't be surprised if, like most all other MMOs out there, there's a "Quick Text" option that will skip the dialogue of the questgivers.
Probably won't be able to skip the in-game cutscenes though...which I guarantee they'll have!
It makes me so sad to see a game that looks like such an all-around masterpiece to be hampered so badly by this terrible voice acting. Not just the voice acting, but the way the characters twitch around unnaturally while speaking. I still expect this to be one of my favorite games, it's just...guh, that sounds so terrible.
