<![CDATA[Nintendo Sending Out Free Wii Dev Kits?]]>

Just got word of an interesting (and totally unconfirmed) rumor from one of our insiders. It seems that Nintendo is giving Wii development kits to smaller studios. A developer in a big coastal American city apparently received a mysterious package from Nintendo. Office staff, programmers, and even the president weren't aware what was inside. The box was opened, and viola, Wii dev kit. This could be a ploy on Nintendo's part to get as many companies working on Wii games as possible. If this is true, it certainly shows Nintendo has improved its stance towards third party studios, as opposed to the iron-fisted days of yore. As I mentioned, this is totally unconfirmed, could've been some mix-up or miscommunication on the developer's end, but it does come from a good source. Do what you will with this tidbit.

<![CDATA[Wii Devkit Under $2k?]]>

It's true! Maybe! According to some forumers over at Ninty fansite Wiivolution.com, other Ninty fansite Codename Revolution says Iwata is down with a delectable devkit price drop:

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata along with the Board of Directors answered many questions at a corporate management policy briefing held last week which revealed that the price of the Wii development kits would now cost as low as $1,732. Iwata expects to increase funding for research and development to prepare for launch.

Third party games galore! Encouraging, that we will have alternatives to Mario Does Milwaukee 2: Ham Sammich Forever.

<![CDATA[IGN's Revolution Dev Kit Hands-On]]> hands-on-revolution-dev-kit-20060309051620301-000.jpg

IGN got their hands on a Revolution dev kit. I'll let that sink in for a second. OK.

While they weren't able to play with any software on it, they were able to grope the hell out of the controllers and peripherals it came with, including a cool motion sensory bar.

Here's the goods:

One attribute about the controller that may be difficult to ascertain from photos is its size. For as many times as we've seen it in various videos and pictures, we're surprised at how tiny the device feels in the hands. The freehand unit is much smaller than the remote that ships with the premium package of Xbox 360, by comparison.

Despite how small it is, it's very natural to hold. The peripheral offers extremely intuitive access to the A button, D-Pad and underbelly B-trigger, all of which are properly labeled.

Interestingly, the A and B buttons located beneath the mysterious home key are labeled twice: A and B in capital letters and again in lowercase letters. We're not sure why. The buttons themselves are clicky, not unlike those found on a Game Boy Advance SP.

The nunchuck unit is snugly held in the opposite hand and the Ethernet wire connecting it to the Revmote is obviously far from final. The two shoulder buttons on the development nunchuck unit are not labeled.

Finally, there's the motion sensory bar, which is a thin black device in the shape of a baton that sits on a tiny stand near or on a television. Nintendo has stated that this bar is a prototype and therefore the unit that ships with the basic developer kit shouldn't be considered final in any way. It is about a foot long and relatively unobtrusive, except for a wire that extends from one side and plugs into the GCN dev kit's Memory Pak slot.

Frankly, I'm happy to see something that isn't obsessing about processing power and graphics churning. I'd much rather hear about the innovative bits and pieces and how they will feel curled in my hand.
