I already gave up on the psp. I bought one, enjoyed FF7:cc, Castlevania, and a few other titles before selling it and getting fallout and l4d with the money. (new, of course. I support good devs.)
Id like to know why everyone thinks the PSP is a failure because it ddnt beat the DS. Well the reason is because the DS is some freak of nature behemoth. The PSP has already been more PROFITABLE than the Gamecube AND Xbox, and those were home consoles. Just because its not leading the pack, doesnt mean its not making money. I dont know why people put such suggnificance of "whose winning the console war" when it doesnt matter. as long as the company is making a profit, the company doesnt care what "position" theyre in.
Im all for a new PSP redesign. mine got stolen a few weeks ago, but it was in VERY bad condition and barely worked (along with my 4gb card, which was the worst thing) so I need a new one, and it being taken is my reason to pick up a new one. ill have to hold off until i see this redesign though. I cant wait for Rock band Unplugged. Im hoping theres some sort of backwards compatibility between DLC you bought for the PS3 version
@Matt Dusza: I absolutely agree. To think 50 million units sold is poor is absurd. I always roll my eyes when people say it's "dying".
I suppose it is a testament to the Sony brand, in a way. With a company as successful as Sony, people have the expectation that they will be triumphant in everything they do. I mean, when you sell 140 million + PS2's worldwide, people expect that success to be repeated again and again.
-The PSP was supposed to kill the DS within six months of launch.
-The attachment rate is in the shitter.
@Matt Dusza:No, the PSP has not been more profitable then the GameCube. The GameCube was profitable from day 1 and up till it's lifespan ended. It also had a higher attachment rate and nowhere near the piracy issue that the PSP suffers from.
The DS isn't a freak of nature, because it's forefathers repeatedly beat down more advanced rivals with ease. The PSP's profit margin hardware and software wise is nothing compared to the DS's.
@Komrade Kayce:Not completely. Pokemon sells fantastically everywhere. Monster Hunter is largely unknown outside of Japan.
@James Johnson:It's not Sony's job to shrill third party games.
While I'm all for digital distribution, I tend to like having a hard copy, and personally hope games continue to be released on blu-ray, UMD, etc. There is something special about having a nice gaming collection on your shelf, that you can actually pick up.
As far as more games for PSP, of course I'm all for it. I love my PSP, and the more games the better. Games like Assassins Creed definitely peak my interest, and I'm glad they are looking into expanding their library by going back into the PS1 vault, so to speak. Japan has been doing that for awhile now, and I always wondered why N.A. hasn't followed suit.
@ReedF**kingRichards: They could always package a UMD "reader" or something that allows you to download the game you want to a PC, then copy it to a memstick.
@Xhacker02: I'm sure this has been brought up before but compression makes it possible even with a 8gb memstick. Sony could lower prices to larger memstick duos to be competitive with microsd cards. I just scored a 8gb microsd card for my g1 for $20 at retail. If sony ditches umd and includes an additional 8/16 or even 32gb of internal storage with a memstick slot then what's the problem? You could still end up with a psp that has up to 40gbs of storage with a 32gb internal flash/8gb memstick combo. The worst case scenario is the internal storage is only 4 or 8gbs but that's still 12 to 16gbs of storage all told.
Games should be downloadable from the psn store considering it can be accessed directly from the psp now. Also, xboxlive's size limit is 300mbs. Psn will support up to 2gbs as far as I know with R&C quest for booty being 2gbs or so. I can't see the average psp game needing more than a gb. Besides, if anyone is bitching because they need to carry around 20 games at one time, that's not a storage problem that's a personal problem. Who the hell carries around their entire ds or psp library especially if its over 7 or 8 games? You carry what you're playing and leave the rest at home. Store what you're playing leave the rest on the ps3 hdd or in the store until you're ready to play it.
Bring it sony. I'm all for a umd-less psp. Could you give it a touch screen too
Whilst the DS is on the scene I just cannot see anything trumping it right now. The only way Sony can grab a larger market share would be by stealing part of Nintendo's market and aiming more casual.
You kidding me? with we're getting Killzone 2 tomorrow (I'm in Australia), Resistance Retribution on March, Dissidia on summer (I'll import it from the US) and Uncharted 2 in November, plus they just announced Motorstorm with snowmobile for the PSP, snowmobile dude!!! I don't give a fuck if GOW3 don't make it this year, it's the year of the PS3, PSP for me.
Growth and momentum? Who are you fooling, Sony? I'm literally a card-carrying fanboy and even I don't buy your crap.
Do you want actual growth and momentum this generation? Try the following:
1. Drop the price on the PS3 and PSP to make them more competitive.
2. Market the PS3 and PSP and games systems and not as all-in-one media devices.
3. Spend money to secure exclusives and timed exclusives for the PS3 and PSP. Don't let MS walk away with all that DLC. (This is why I got Fallout 3 for 360, btw.)
4. SCEA: get off your asses and start making the deals necessary to bring more PSone titles to the PSN Store. At last glance, the US had less than 30 titles. The Japanese store has over 220. Fix that!
5. Drop the price on first-party games.
6. The PSN Store is a goldmine for unique full and downloadable games. Why not exploit this position?

I hope this 'slimer' model makes it look a tonne better. :/

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. The PSP is a fucking beauty compared to the DS

Something tells me the people who would go out and buy Imagine: Babies! wouldn't be first in line to pre-order Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunter is to PSP as Pokemon is to Gameboy.
I bought a PSP the day after I played MH for the first time. Best decision ever.

Sony really needs to bite the bullet and lower the PS3 price for bigger distribution.

Add on SCEE for our friends across the pond. They make SCEA's PSN store look like a model to follow.
