After watching almost a season of the show, I came to the realization that Penn and Teller were ridiculously hypocritical. For instance, they spend time in one show arguing how the use of statistics and numbers to prove a point is BS, but they use statistics and numbers to prove their points. They also show that anyone can bend the truth to suit their argument, something they do quite often.
Basically, the show is an attempt to win over the audience through swearing and nudity, while their arguments aren't exactly sound and the people they attack are generally so stupid and worthless to begin with, attacking them becomes redundant.
Would still like to see Penn chew out Jack Thompson, though.
@CowLion: They pointed out that they have an agenda in an a couple episodes. They talked about how they are biased specifically. I mean how can you not be. I would love to know where you saw them say statistic are bullshit. I mean what statistics were they talking about? Some random poll done by a religious group or a variety of polls done by respectable groups. I mean sure believing everything authority figures tells us is a little risky, but we have to do it. If we don't we couldn't trust anyone and nothing would get done. I would say though the majority of the stuff they dubunk is completely right. I have disagreed with a couple (gun control), but I still liked the reason why they wanted less gun control.
@CowLion: While they do some questionable editing at times for the sake of good television, Penn and Teller have always been up front about their bias. All they're trying to do is make you think differently I'm guessing they attacked something that was a little too close to home and then decided you didn't like it anymore? That was it wasn't it?
@Cartman86: That is what's great about them... They don't fake objectivity... They're just honest about being biased, and if more "news" organizations would do the same, the world would be a better place... Really...
I hate the way that dude talks. It's abrasive and condescending yet somehow totally insincere at the same time. Penn, I mean, not Jacky. Well, him too.
@Matt Reilly: As much as I love Penn & Teller, I'd agree that he shouts down to his audience too much to be an effective persuader. He seems to think that because the facts the show presents is on his side that it's all he needs, but the framework of the lecture matters, too. I can definitely see it being off putting to people, but it's really just an extension of his barker personality stemming from the magic act.
I love this show, I'm only up to season 5 so far since I only discovered it about 2 months ago. But the news that they'll be doing something videogame related sounds like fun.
I bet they'll have naked women running around at some point during that episode.
Really? As much as I agree with most of their viewpoints, I just can't help but be slightly repulsed by their collectively obnoxious assholishness. Ya know?
Eh. The show is a bit bullshit itself. I can't remember the exact details, because it's been so long since I've seen it, but the one during the... second season, I think? Where they talk about survivalists, or the end of the world, or something? Every single person they interview and meet never actually mentions the topic they're covering. The whole thing's just 'insinuated' by Penn & Teller.
@Moleculor: Yeah, while I love Penn & Teller, and sometimes I totally agree with their stances and sometimes I don't... they really need to an episode about how pre-taped exposé shows that can be edited to serve whatever point they're trying to make (such as theirs) are Bullshit.
@716: Yeah, while I love Penn & Teller, and sometimes I totally agree with their stances and sometimes I don't...
This is a good thing. It shows that you're able to watch the show and make up your own mind and not just follow along with them. Frankly I'd be more concerned if you agreed with them all of the time, because it'd show a lack of an ability to make up your own opinion.
I absolutely love Penn and Teller because they're obvious libertarians who aren't afraid to call bullshit when they see it (duh). Sure they can be abrasive but that's just a backlash against the wave of dissent of the entire world being unable to see what's really going on. Basically they have to as loud and obnoxious as possible at times just to get noticed and heard and I appreciate how they challenge the viewer in to thinking against the norm.
As someone else pointed out, it's not that this is the first game marathon--it's that we're essentially cruel, heartless beings, and we love to inflict torture on each other. What really makes this tick is that these poor, unfortunate souls have to continue this exercise in Sisyphean futility according to the amount collected, giving us vicious bastards a good, solid reason to donate.
At least they're doing something they don't want do to.
I've seen a guy on the local news a few years back claiming he was going to ride a roller coaster continuously until he raised a certain amount of money. Wow, big sacrifice. Take a week off from work to ride your favorite ride for charity. I'd like to take page from this guy's book to raise money for charity. Find something I love doing then and do it nonstop until people donated enough to make me stop.
I might donate some money to these guys. But only if I can get the proper documentation so I claim it on my taxes. I'm not charitable enough to give twice.

I think I'm too impatient, when I know there's a video waiting for me at the bottom of a post, to delay watching it with the text that sets it up.
