I think Sega might be taking a nod from EA's missteps last year with Dead Space and Mirror's Edge. New IPs get lost in the shuffle 'round the holidays. However, with the sheer amount of triple A titles now dropping in early 2010, I'm not sure how smart this is after all....
@hobob: I think it's safe to say Modern Warfare 2 will dominate all sales. I'm sure Mario, Halo, and Uncharted will sell well, but those are tied to a single console. I'm most curious how Assassin's Creed II will do given how many people seem to have written off the first as a redundant flop despite the hype and sales. Not sure if it'll benefit from now having an established brand or hurt by poor gameplay memories of the first.
ARGH... '09 is starting to annoy me.. i want some lengthy freakin sp games.. though i do realise Brutal Legend, KoF and Demon's Souls will ease the pain.
but damnit 2010 seems to a year to look forward to. Team Ico's creation, GoW, Bayonetta, Borderlands and there will be anouncement of a full adventure game featuring a hefty battlesystem which consist of catching, training and battling monsters.. in 3d! It'll happen, you'll see.. you'll all see!!
For all of the game delays we've been seeing lately, I've been pretty nonchalant about it, but before you know it, all that will be released this holiday is MW:2.
Much like 30 is the new 20, I predict fiscal 4th quarter will be the new fiscal 3rd quarter.
Ugh...I was really looking forward to this one. To know that it's being pushed back simply so it doesn't get lost in the holiday shuffle is disappointing. Especially since it seems like half of this year's fall releases are getting pushed to 2010. -_-
@excel_excel: you took the brit slang right outta my mouth.
This is/was my next anticipated game. I like shooters and all, they're fun, but I like my single player action/adventure/hack & slash more, and in my eyes Kamiya fulfills that to a tee.
why are people sad? Nobody wants to see new IPs during the holiday, after what happened to EA last year, they'd be stupid to put a new IP up against Modern Warfare 2, Halo and every other sequel coming between Oct and Dec. The gaming industry needs to learn, and finally looks like they are, what the movie industry learned a long time ago: there's a season for everything. There's not just christmas and nothing afterwards. You can, in fact, sell video games all year long.
Firstly, Alpha Protocol, Brutal Legend, Dragon Age, Borderlands, and Saboteur make plenty of non-sequels finding launch between October 1st and December 31st. It's one less than before with Bayonetta's push to 2010, but it's not a season devoid of new intellectual property.
Secondly, the 'Holiday' season sees the largest sales of any given time of year. There's a reason for that, and it's not that 'the good games' come out then. Yes, games can sell any time of year, but when there's a release model that a publisher can see which maximizes profits, it's silly to ignore it.
These delays are along the same model, maximizing profit. The publishers felt that there wasn't much chance of competing reasonably with titles that will take advantage of the 'Holiday' season.
As for the movie industry, the same thing happens. Remember when Harry Potter was delayed to a part of the year that will maximize their profit? That's exactly what happens when deciding when to, and when not to, try to launch late in the year.
...and sadly, aside from probably Brutal Legend, which is riding a wave of good PR, most of games are going to get screwed just like all the new IPs got screwed last year.
and yes, the holidays are the biggest sales time of the year, for obvious reasons, but what's silly is putting a game like Bayonetta, a game that, to be quite honest I haven't heard of until now, against games like Call Of Duty, Halo, Splinter Cell and the like. And so it's better to take those games and move them to other times of the year like Sega is doing with this one.
which is basically what you said, which is what I said at the start, so I don't know why you're arguing with me.
I've been ignoring Bayonetta as Devil May Cry specifically re-imagined to maximize fanservice. Judging by these comments, apparently I missed some revelation that suggested the game, regardless of its fanservice, holds merit.
Now, unexpectedly, I join in mourning the loss of yet another title to the graveyard known as 2010, and wait impatiently for the year that was supposed to be this year.
What exactly does Palin have to do with this game..Please don't get political on me Kotaku, the internet is leftist enough to give me an aneurysm already.
@ShoopDaBoofs: The sad part is, and people on the right still haven't realized this, just because you're "conservative" doesn't mean you have to defend every idiot who also calls theirself a conservative. McCain lost because he couldn't figure this out, and the Republican party will die if it doesn't distance itself from the idiots, warmongers, racists, liars, torturers, etc. that infest their party.
Or just keep whining about everything being a "leftist" conspiracy and calling people socialists or reverse racists. I'm sure that will work this next time.
@ShoopDaBoofs: Stop bringing politics in this and stfu. You don't like the "leftist" internet, unplug it. Simple as that. This article compared appearances, and that's it. Nobody wants to debate with you, nobody wants to talk about your politics, nobody cares. GTFO to foxnews.com and stay there.
@Saiwyn Hy: Sorry, but you seriously need a wake up call if you get your history lessons from Savage. Leftists have been commies. Rightists have been fascists. Fascists are the ones that thump and yell nationalism. Hitler's party was right-winged, for example. Leftists are Communists, like Castro and Lenin. Of course, the extremes both tend to end up looking like one another.
Extreme right wingers, like the Objectivists, for example, are similar to extreme left wingers in their disdain for religion, but their methods of control of the population is the same. Except Objectivists propose extreme levels of selfishness and separation from any concept of community and extreme Communists propose extreme self-sacrifice at your own expense for the betterment of the country/"motherland". Both are retarded.
No, but many also think we should privatize everything and that will solve all our problems. Like CA and Enron weren't proof of that mantra not working. Imagine if our water ever gets privatized.
Or that we should give only rich people money and that will magically trickle down on all of us.
Or that a woman should have right to an abortion even if cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening circumstances.
Or that pollution in the name of profit is a good thing.
Or that we should leave people who are poor (sometimes for generations) completely without assistance to help improve their lives, because there's no chance they might turn to crime in desperation.
Or, I could go on...
Yeah, the left-wing ain't perfect for sure, but they get more right than they do wrong.
@ShoopDaBoofs: Winguttary at it's finest! Why are you assuming something as simple as Sarah Palin's mention is automatically negative? Obviously any mention of Palin is typically the punch line of a joke, but really, can you blame anyone? No. You can't. Even as a wingnut crying about the "leftist" internets you can't help but see her as someone nobody mentions unless making a joke about her.
Most importantly, why is making fun of her "leftist"? She's an impossibly stupid, frighteningly dishonest clown of a person with little to no understanding of basic English. The sooner people such as yourself realize this, the sooner you can start saving your party from the lunatic base.
@GLaDOS: Sure thing guy....and I bet you think Lincoln was a Democrat.
I don't remember saying anything about Savage, but great way to generalize. Technically we are both right and both wrong as Fascism is opposed to both ends of the spectrum and sits somewhere off by itself.
I do agree that both extremes are retarded though.
I would probably still be occupied with Arkham Asylum till then.
We'll still see some other good titles coming out, unless all of them pull out. Then that wont work.
Seriously guys, get one game, play the hell out of it, and by the time you finish, that other game you wanted to get on launch would have already been available at a discounted price at online fronts.
This is how you deal with backlogs, boys and girls.
