@tingyu: That's not true at all. I know many PS3 owners who still buy and play PS2 games. They actually spend more time checking for PS2 games than PS3 ones.
Sony taking the original 60GB model off the market was a mistake. The lack of backward compatibility is sure to have been a deal breaker for those who still play their PS2 games. It certainly has been for me.
Even though the price of PS2's have come right down - ideally you don't want to have 2 consoles setup next to one another if it can be avoided and it could've had Sony kept the backward compatibility in the PS3. This is one thing about the Wii I can't fault. It runs GameCube games absolutely fine!
With the PS3 costing less to manufacture, hopefully Sony will see sense and release a newer SKU which has the emotion engine built in.
@Dryden: I convinced 4 people. Two on the basis of MGS4, one on GTA4, and one on Blu-Ray.
Surely, we can get something out of this? ;)
Honestly though, I think the PS3 is a great piece of kit. I am glad to see it do well. If I didn't fully believe that my friends who I convinced to get one would enjoy it, I wouldn't have recommended it. The system is by far the best entertainment device I have ever owned.
I suggest everyone read the entire CNet link. It's got a lot of great numbers in it. It might help answer some of the questions that have been brought up here.
@dgd1542: same here I will wait for the NPD numbers. Internal Data might be shipped numbers and not actual sold to people. We all know that MS and Sony love to say sold when really there shipped numbers.
I think that's great for them. While I don't own a PS3 (big Xbox guy), I don't want to see the competition fail. I'd rather see them flourish and give me a reason to go buy one and improve their business.
Given that PS2 is the best selling console of all time, not having PS2 BC on PS3 is one of the dumbest decisions that Sony has ever made, ever. I still have 27 PS2 games on my backlog to play on my 60 GB PS3 (upgraded to 320 GB).
@gencid: no, it's a smart decision, they didnt take it out for no reason, dont forget, ps3's are sold at a loss. taking out a ps2 would exponentially lower the cost to make them, as to help them start making money and such.
I did my share. Showed a friend a walkthrough of Home and some games(LBP,Motorstorm PR and the excellent PSN games) and he went and bought the 160gb version. He's a big 360 user like myself also. You would have to be to sit through Level 50 on all characters in Too Human.
On all characters? Damn son, that's quite a feat. While I enjoyed the game and the grind, one toon to 50 is all I could stand. That and spending 10 hours grinding for epic armor with not a single drop. WTF!
@enewtabie: I too did my share. Couldn't believe my boyfriend had NEVER owned a Sony console so I let him play some MGS4 and he got the 160gig this christmas too! I did my part though by getting him R2, FO3, and RB2.
@enewtabie: me too, i got my friend interested in the ps3 with home and mgs4. he loved the 360, but he liked the ps3's graphics and games better apparently, and got one.
@Shabadage: Um, a 130% increase is an actual 130% increase...it's the word "increase" that lets you know. It's not "We sold 130% as many units this time as last year." That would be a 30% increase.
With the reccesion hitting it's being said (by psychologists) that people will turn to more interactive forms of entertainment to ease there minds. So this reccession is actually kind of good for the games industry as a whole.
No offense but twice of crap is still crap. As shown by their drop to the 23 position in the net value of the company. All of Sony's divisions are doing bad. And I could care less if they burn. Damn bastards with their root kits >_>
@LokeSTL: Whats the point of BC when, if you do buy a ps3, you probably own a ps2. thus making it pointless for you to spend more money on a feature thats rarely used by most people.
@LokeSTL: I've been wanting to get a ps3 for awhile, and I admit that I'd never use the BC feature...but if the 40g systems were BC when both ps3 and 360 were $400, I would have bought one in a heartbeat over the 360 I ended up getting. Its just one of those features people love to have available.
Some people may view backwards compatibility as a useless feature, but plenty of people enjoy revisiting older games on occasion.
Especially considering the PS3 can upscale the graphics, along with the lovely ability to have a wireless controller. It also means less space in a media centre or entertainment unit being taken up by another console.
Some Sony diehards need to accept the fact that people are annoyed that the company to first truly support backwards compatibility (with the PS2) and even have it in their initial releases of their current hardware dropped it out in favour of profits.
The same people defended the lack of rumble, yet praised it's return.
@buttersstotch: Except when I could sell my PS2 to get money towards my PS3. And then when such games as Persona 3, FES, and Persona 4 come out I'm not praying my decade old console doesn't spit a disc-read error at me.
@tendollarbanana: if they had kept it it, that same ps3 wouldve costed $50+ more than it was, they took it out to reduce cost, you cant always tape an existing console inside another one. (i have an 80 gig ps3 with BC btw.)
@zgreenwell: I know this doesn't count for much but there is a latest purchases thread on the official nintendo magazine forums I go on (in off topic) and there were a crap ton of people posting PS3s around christmas. I only spotted one or two 360s.
The Gametrailers forums had loads of new people, including myself, who got a PS3 this Dcmber.About 10 of my real life friends got one or are going to buy one within the month. The PS3 seems to be gaining steam.
TimDJ84= Sony Schill, possibly a paid one. Multiple comments, same sentiment, same bullshit spin.
Instead of comparing these BULLSHIT percentages that Sony has to fall back on, show us the number of PS3s sold 12/07 vs. 12/08 and the number of XB360 and Wiis during those two periods as well.
A 150% increase is the same number as a 50% decrease.
Rule of thumb:
IF YOU SEE A PERCENTAGE AND YOU BELIEVE IT YOU ARE GETTING FOOLED.
@Qui-GonJim: so microsoft has fooled everyone about the sales of the 360 then? dont be a dumbass hipocrate. by your logic, microsoft has probably lied about all of it's sales. your broad generalizations are stupid.

DRM that allows X amount of installs just like Spore.
$400 for Vista?? XP with more bugs??
Like paying more for Live? It'll come without competition.
Think MS cares more? The only reason they extended the warranty to 3 years was to not lose sales to Sony..
When was the last time MS even worked on improving internet explorer? That's right when Firefox took 15% of the browser market.
I could go on all day about what a shit ass company MS is, and you can give me "Root kits"??
