@TearsandScreams: Glad I could help. I'd been looking for another black controller to replace my "secondary" one, which is white.
It's clearly not a necessary purchase, since the white pad works fine. But for that price, I can indulge myself without feeling like I'm throwing cash away. :)
In the Uk last week WH Smith started trying to off load their console hardware, as they move away from selling it.
They have been selling PS3 for as low as £200 Brand new!!!
If you have a WH Smith in your area i suggest asking/phoning if they have any left and if/when they are getting rid of them, as you might get yourself a great deal like my friend did in London :P
@Jolan- needs something witty to put here: Hey, when I posted it, I didn't see yours, so I came up with it myself too! If this were RL, and not a comment thread, I might have to say, "Jinx!"
For those looking for BC, there are new PS2s available for $140, $130 and less, and used for lower prices than that. If you need to have a BC PS3, they are still out there in the wild, but you have to look. Sites as popular as Amazon would have a hard time keeping them in stock if they had them for sale. Look elsewhere, try CAG, ebay, other avenues. There are definitely used 60 gigs around waiting to be bought.
Claiming you won't buy a PS3 without BC isn't going to convince Sony to suddenly fix their error, and those old models will only become more rare as time passes. Just the way it is. Alternately, people could try waiting out for the inevitable price drops, maybe redesign(s), and then get a cheaper PS3 AND a dirt cheap PS2. Not ideal, but could save money down the road. And don't fool yourselves, the PS2 is the best machine for playing PS2 games.
I just realized how deprived a lot of you are. I can understand if the price tag is just out of reach but the lot of you have some really ridiculous desires and needs.
The PS3 had the bigger exclusive library in 2008, and will continue the trend in 2009; yet the lot of you seem to only want 1 game and it either falls into a defacto genre or franchise.
"I only want FFXIII, FF7 Remake, Killzone 2; Otherwise it has no games."
That has been the mantra for so long...while true gamers are enjoying a varied experience in platformers, shooters, survival horrors, puzzle games, RPGs...There is the sour bunch who will for the most part stay isolated in their "What works" and "Cookie Cutter" sandbox and just play the games that they are familiar with.
Over half of the games that have been released on the PS3 thus far have been new IP's and frankly they have been nothing but stellar (albeit lack of commercial success).
I don't understand the "want" for just 1 particular game or franchise. I'm looking forward to Killzone 2, Versus XIII, Infamous, Heavy Rain, GT5, God of War 3, Resident Evil 5...see what I did there?
I'm sorry but limiting yourself to just one genre or franchise is just...I feel sorry for you.
@element7: Exactly. Seems like many commenters in this post are only aware of the popular/controversial games for PS3, nothing else. There are plenty of games out there, both exclusive and multiplatform. Not doing any research isn't an excuse for claiming there's nothing that interests you..
Not wanting to buy multiplatform games you already own is understandable, but pretending they don't exist or assuming they are automatically better on one platform or the other is idiotic.
Contrary to popular belief, there's more out there beyond what television and popular opinion tells us. Crazy..
@element7: That's the thing that primarily irks me when I see people rampantly bemoaning the so called "lack of good games" for the system. The PS3 library has grown by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years just as the PSX and PS2 did before it.
It has some of the most varied and different software available on all three current console platforms.
Resistance 1&2 Motorstorm 1&2 Heavenly Sword Warhawk Uncharted Ratchet & Clank Future Folklore metal Gear Solid 4 Socom Valkyria Chronicles Ninja Gaiden Sigma and LittleBigPlanet are just a selection of the exclusive games that many people praise in one way or another.
Even smaller more niche titles like Disgaea 3 Buzz Eye of Judgment etc. are fantastic in their own ways.
That's not even taking into consideration upcoming exclusives such as Uncharted 2 Ratchet & Clank Future 2 inFamous Killzone 2 God of War III Final Fantasy versus XIII etc. And of course that's only what's known about now.
Never mind the fact that there's a myriad of multi-platform titles already released (Call of Duty 4 Assassin's Creed Rock Band etc.) and forthcoming (Street Fighter IV Resident Evil 5 Final Fantasy XIII etc.). Sure some sites wish to tout the perceived "worse" quality the PS3 versions supposedly have but there are just as many titles on the opposite end of the spectrum which will become all the more apparent in the future since many companies are now designing and developing their games with the PS3 as lead platform.
Lets not forget the absolutely wonderful PSN games out there. Super Stardust HD Pixeljunk Monsters Wipeout HD etc. are all awesome games. And of course mult-platform titles like Bionic Commando Rearmed Megaman 9 Street Fighter 2 HD Remix etc.
All three platforms have their benefits and deficits. Those who bemoan the PS3 for it's so called lack of quality software are gullible naive ignorant and outright liars.
There's obviously things you can dislike (later release of Dualshock 3 removal of backwards compatibility late trophy integration/lack of universal adoption mandatory installs etc.) but there are as many issues with the other two platforms. And many of the "well my console is better than your console" line of reasoning comes straight down to preference (controller of choice online service composite/component/HDMI etc.).
The PS3 has a fantastic library of games to enjoy that is only going to continue growing as time goes by not only in quantity but also quality.
Damn! Another deal I can't avail of since I'm not from the US...Hopefully I can get around to buying a PS3 before the year is up. Just in time for Gow3?! I hope so...
I love having a 60GB model (upgraded to a 160GB hard drive though). The card readers, extra two USB slots and PS2 compatibility are all features I use. I even love the chrome finish.
god help me, I nearly bought one. Then I realized I was just being gripped by Price Drop Fever. See Sony? If you make your prices more affordable, even die hard Sony haters like me consider buying your console.
@ThickSkinned: yeah, me too. I was about to jump on it, and then I realized that Valkyria was probably the only thing I'd play... and I have a queue of six great unbeaten games on other systems to go through.
If they'd lowered it to $300, I may have forgotten about the queue long enough to grab my credit card.
The PS2 compatibility was nice during the transition period, but I haven't played a PS2 game since last winter. Once you start playing in 720p and 1080p, it's really hard to look at anything less.
@Kensukevic: I dunno, I often find there's something to be said for gameplay...appear to be in a disturbing minority here. Really? You can't play a PS2 game because it's not in 720 or 1080p? Your loss...
@Crumplecorn: But maybe a 'good game' to him is weighted more heavily on graphics. This is the same problem with traditional game reviews that try to put numbers and stars on things, not everyone has the same criteria for what they like in a game and what makes it a good game.
@TearsandScreams: no, it's the fact that after youve played HD games, you start nitpicking about what looks good and what doesnt in the HD games. when you go back it's like you are getting off of a drug and are succumbing to the side effects of not doing it anymore. it's hard to go back to low def, it's not even about eyecandy (@Crumplecorn:) it simply doesnt look seem as good. even if it's the best game ever, it will look worse than the worst looking game in HD(whatever that may be). the only games i can see myself going back to are probably the god of war games, shadow of the collosus, the jak and daxter games and games that came out on the ps2 in 2005+. other than those, they better have been the best games ever to be played for more that 2 minutes. also, i'd play some ps1 gaes, but those are classic so they dont count.
@obey81: people who have B/C(i have 80 gig B/C) bare;y ever use it. the PS3's games look so good that we dont want to go back to low def. thats why i dont have a 360. (see what i did there?)
Between saving on tax, saving $50 off of retail price, and getting free Blu-Rays, this isn't a horrible deal. I would jump at this if I hadn't already when MGS4 was released.
"Every day that passes I feel more and more silly for spending $600 on the 60GB at launch. Then I slip in a PlayStation 2 game and feel much better about it."
@Essonse: Not really, maybe Fahey just doesn't like that he spent the $600 when people have gotten 60GB PS3s for less. Nothing wrong with wanting to get the same thing for less money...

It's £17.95 - shipping is free within the UK, £0.99 anywhere else in Europe.
They also have the Collector's Edition of Gears Of War 2 for the same price.
Oddly enough, the regular edition is still priced at... £29.95.
Bionic Commando, for those who were unsure about buying it full price? Same thing, £17.95.
I'd never ordered from zavvi before, but I think I'll check them out more often.
