Prince of Persia is the most casual next-gen action game available. Based on the fact that you can't die and you basically play the whole game with three buttons. The worst part is that it's boring, the combat is terrible.
@yargh: While I know I'll be promoting this simply by responding to it, I just have to say the whole "you can't die" argument is simply idiotic.
Death: Falling, screaming, fading to black, spawning at last checkpoint.
Elika Saves You: Falling, screaming, fading to white, spawning at last checkpoint.
Sorry it creates the illusion of the Prince only having one life to live.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I love the art style, voice acting, and gameplay. I really love Prince of Persia. Not to mention the fact that Elika is totally amazing. My favorite female companion in all of video games.
Don't agree that it made me feel like a tool. In fact, I thought that ending was one of the more brilliant endings to a game ever. If it had ended with him simply bringing her to the altar and done, I would have been ticked. But instead, he makes a choice. A choice between spending the world in peace without her, or awakening a dark god so he can be with her.
@Pancake_Ninja: I completely agree, and the strength of the ending should silence all claims that Ubisoft somehow cheated us by putting the "true ending" in the pay-to-play Epilogue.
The Epilogue adds remarkably little to the story - it's mostly Elika being pissed at the Prince, and the Prince grovelling - love it! :)
But the "true ending" is what's on the disc. It has a much stronger impact without the coda, so I'd argue it's a good thing that the Epilogue wasn't in the full game.
It was just a very strong addition to the game for those who wanted more.
I know the game is not popular on the interwebs, but I'm eagerly awaiting a sequel.
@zgreenwell:
You do have a choice. You've already seen that credits at that point. You can call the game done, and stop playing, or you can do something more questionable.
@Antiterra: Whoa whoa wait a minute, he's a prince? I never once heard him say anything about being a prince, nor is there any hints that he may be one. The only indication is the title of the game, and it seems to me that title is there only because there's parkour involved and it's in "Persia." Also he stole a shitload of money and never finds his donkey (in the retail game).
But to agree with you, I did like the ending. It's not really a choice for you as a gamer, and you're forced into making the decision to save her. However, I like that the protagonist falls in love with Elika throughout the story, and he decides a world without her is not a possibility. Her simple response to being revived really pulls heavy at the heart strings, because you know all she has fought for was just thrashed, but the love element is just too strong for the hero to bear. He has the option to save her, so he does.
The game was entirely built around the platforming aspect and the story -- there was little combat to speak of. Orb collecting was not my favorite piece, and I think I may have comlpetely gotten all orbs in only one or two parts of the map. I mean seriously, 45 orbs x 20+ subsections? That's a large amount of backtracking once you unlock all 4 powers. No thank you.
@Pancake_Ninja:
I agree. great ending. And since i got the epliogue for free with my game, i didn't feel like it was a waste of money. In fact it fixed the only part i disliked about PoP, it made the platforming more challenging and made the feeling of playing the game on "autopilot" disappear.
the more i think about the ending, the better it gets :)
@zgreenwell: You would, but the prince wouldn't. It's his story, not yours.
Think about it, it was brilliant:
You could have just put the controller down, you had the final boss and the credits. It was the end. Many games just leave you in the open world at the end.
However you see that there is something to do. Thats because the prince want's to do it. But you don't want to do it since it would undo all you did. Thats because the prince knows that he shouldn't it's against what Elikas wishes.
You try to jump to the first tree and press the elika button, but she doesn't come and you fall. You feel how weak the prince is without Elika, how he needs her.
@relic1980: Serves it right since we didn't get a epilogue for the PC release. I bought mine on Steam and then later found out about oh no epilogue for you PC users. I haven't bought a Ubi game since... on PC.
@Belabras ate my dingo!: I ended up buying the limited edition of Brothers in Arms:Hell's Highway with the lil' action figure for 6.00 (I admit; the fact that the dolly was designed by a company that is housed in a small house in Groveport OH (my old home town) factored in my decision to buy it ^_^).
Am going back to that Big Lots later today, though.
What the hell man? Is 560 like a new standard price point or something? I hate "uneven" price points on the MArketplace. By that, I mean things that don't cost something like 800 or 250 or anything like that. Things that cost 560 and other prices of its ilk make it kind of hard to fully get rid of all you Marketplace points.....I should know, cause for the longest time I had only 20 MP always sitting there because of an early purchase I made. I finally caved in and bought a Kameo GamerPic, but still. I hate...well...wasting MP.
@Antiterra: But the thing is, there is hardly anything that costs less than 80 MP. Case in point, I would've got another GamerPic instead, but Kameo was the ONLY game that had single GamerPics for 20 MP each. All other games have them in packs for 80 MP.
@Yossarian: No thank you. Buying clothes for Avatars is the single most idiotic thing ever....unless it is buying one of those badass video game outfits like for Mass Effect or Gears of War.
@Gaz: Yeah, strange that there's no source mentioned. A quick check of the Marketplace's web interface shows that the price is still 1600 points. Major Nelson's site reports the deal as the Fifa stuff.
What's sad is LATD was better than the entirety of GTA4. Shorter sure, but if you're game is long and bad, then it's not really a good thing. I just hope Gay Tony is even better. Keep it up Rockstar. You're slowly redeeming my faith in your company after how terrible GTA4 was.
@geiko: 800 MS points = 10 US dollars.
Not to be snarky, but not only is this information easily found on the web, it is also calculable from the story above in that the price reduction is described alternately as $5 or 400 points.
@geiko: It's easy, sport! Now listen up. 10 good old American dollars equals 50 strawpennies, and 50 strawpennies equals 30 quid, which in turn is the same as 4 chickens and a bag of oranges, which equates to 90 wooden nickels which finally equals 800 Microsoft points! Ya gotta learn the rates or you'll never make it! Ya know what else never made it? Vaudeville! No matter how good you were, the tv always had ya beat! I, for one, am a tumbler!
@Combat Waffle: I seem to have gotten an answer here just fine. And considering I had already clicked the article, why t hell wouldn't I ask the question. Why the hell am I even replying to you damn kids anyways? Oh and thanks to those who answered the question.
There's a retail pack that's supposed to have both the expansion packs coming soon right?
Considering retail packs drop in price faster I guess if people are yet to get it, it's prolly best to wait?
@WhatTheFrag:
This is what I hate about digital distribution. I am not saying that I totally hate supporting developers or anything, but I enjoy playing a vast array of games, and the only way to do so it pick most of my games up for a median price of around $25.
@wickedcobra03: There's that, and then there's people like me, who are old fasioned in the sense that we love our physical copy - full game or expansion.
@IvanDashSmith: You can always play it, delete the content and then the helicopters should return to normal, right? Just clutching at straws and trying to offer a fix. It's the type of content that you can't miss though.
@IvanDashSmith: The only thing I know that's any different with helicopters is that the military helicopter now has exploding rounds in L&D. Besides that they are the same. Motorcycles drive differently, but helicopters are the same.
@Hi-Im-Asylum: if they did that, you'd actually only have to pay $5 for this. If they stick with their ludicrous point system, however, they nab $6.95. I'm sure that adds up nicely for them :/
@Hi-Im-Asylum: No they do not need Paypal integration. As long as they keep this Byzantine system, there will be retailers willing to sell points at well under face value. Like the 4000 points I scored for about 34 bucks.
In addition, as long as they keep points, the vast majority of casual gamers will spend more than they intend to simply because it's so difficult to understand the "real value" of points...
@thegreatfratsby:Uhh, yeah. That's kind of the point. That and how much more convienient it would be to use Paypal for direct debit from XBL. I've never seen any retailers underpricing MS points, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.
@kobeashi: No, that's untrue. If they switched to Paypal, they'd charge you the same amount ($6.25, by the way, not $6.95) unless they also changed the conversion rate or flat-out announced this was going to be made available for $5.00... 500 points =/= $5.00, and suddenly adopting Paypal wouldn't make that statement true, either.
I was talking about if they used paypal to buy the DLC directly, Einstein. I don't even know where you made the leap to talking about friggin' conversion rates. And as for your 500 points != $5.00, the article quotes an approximate $5 price tag, so take it up with the editor about if that's "untrue" and you want it to be corrected to something "true" to avoid more spouts about your "true" versus "untrue," in truth. For shit's sakes....
