Wow, you'd think Part 2 would have landed at $10 since those early adopters bought in at $20 and need to use up HD space to play the game. At least keep it on level with the retail packaging.
@splatternick: Exactly! I'm sure plenty of old school gamers here have fond memories of Double Dragon and are probably ripping on Watchmen the End is Nigh for being repetitive.
I wonder which it is, hypocrisy or selective forgetfulness?
@Twisk: Standards evolve over time. People once enjoyed Dragon Warrior. Now, I doubt any modern player would stomach through the game aside from any feelings of nostalgia.
I do agree that Watchmen is actually a pretty decent game going from the demo. The enemies are repetitive though -- Double Dragon has more variety in its first level than Watchman appears to have. I loathe having to unlock stuff, especially when it comes to gameplay elements such as moves in a beat-em up. The only game which I believe pulled it off was the Double Dragon NES port.
The movie was great, just got back from it. I'm so happy that they didn't exploit all of the recognizable icons, like...the box of this does. The blood splatter for the I? Really? Either way, the movie was excellent, if you're not a Watchman purist and can enjoy, and accept, a few changes for the big screen.
As you may have picked up, this is a micro-review, which only run to three "points". Those three negatives were more important than the couple of positives, though I did still point those out in the body of the review.
I bought it! Yes, its far too short. But the combat is more than enjoyable enough to merit some playthroughs, especially with friends. Lets hope the next installments (apparently it's episodic?) are longer, and feature the rest of the characters!
How is the split screen co-op? I am always sad when games think we ONLY play online multiplayer and don't have actual friends over for anything other that Guitar Hero/Rock Band and Wii Sports.
So why is it that Luke says that he likes the combo mechanics (arguably the most important part of a beat 'em up) and graphics, but completely omits the "Loved" section?
Were they not good enough to warrant bullet points? Was there an error in posting? Or was it just an attempt at sensationalism?
I grabbed it, but haven't tried it yet...looks like it will be at least $20 worth of fun for a big Watchmen fan like me though. (I have the graphic novel...Ok really big ass comic book, and the Blu Ray of the motion comic, and already have my tickets for Sunday at the Imax screen...most were sold out until then)
@TheGreyFox: I'm glad someone did some research... you'd think the reviewer could at least do an IMDB search, let alone finish the game and look at the credits.
So if Luke can't be bothered to get that tiny bit of easily researchable info correct... does this obviously slanted review hold any water? He also mentions that the graphics were fantastic... why no 'Loved' section? Looking for commenters to react to it, I'll wager.
Bought the game, never read the GN, haven't seen the movie yet. It's a very entertaining piece of videogaming. To each their own, though.
@Tenth: Probably because as he said, there's a lot of recycled material and you wind up seeing the same environments, textures and enemies your entire time through.
So despite good graphics for what's there, there wouldn't exactly be that much to love since it quickly grows tiresome in it's presentation.
@Guts_: I was hoping all the negativity surrounding the game was just coming from Moore fans whining about "tarnishing" the name and the lack of Moore's direct input, because I was hoping to get a fun Streets of Rage style beat-em up. The videos looked promising. Oh well. Early candidate for a Gold discount maybe? :^)
A) Make it episodic B)Make it almost exclusively co-op C) Make that Co-Op same system only D)Sell it to me for $20 E)Basse it on a movie
Any one of those things (Well except maybe C) would have me think twice about the game. Putting them all together lets me dismiss the whole thing altogether quite easily.

If it's packaged as a movie with the game included, we may be able to see some good discounts on Amazon and the like.
I've never seen the movie but hear it's pretty good. I could see myself getting this for a good price. The games would just be extra.

A strange new hybrid chimera of a beast that features both the games and the movie...on separate discs

Yes, the characters were voiced by the film actors. Honestly, that's my bad.
They were SO bad, though, I didn't bother checking. Like, it wasn't "oh man, this is kinda bad, I wonder if it's the same guys".
It was more "lord, this is awful, it can't be the same guys".
Doesn't change the fact the voice acting is bad - in fact, that just makes it worse - but it's still an error. Sorry.

Reading IGN's review left a bad taste in my mouth with Hilary Goldstein being an idiot and trashing on the concept.
All games that include co-op should strive to provide both so everyone can enjoy.
