Dead Space Upgrade Packs Are Scary Too

Just when we thought the horror was over and we could go back to playing games that were more colorful and less deadly, EA goes and announces Premium Upgrade Packs for their new survival horror franchise Dead Space, delivering a brand-new sort of terror to the series - useless, cosmetic upgrades...for a price! Now to be fair, some of the upgrade packs do add functionality to the weapons and armor in Dead Space, such as the Heavy Damage Pack that adds a new look and increased firepower to several of the game's weapons, but at the same time we get the Hot Rod Pack, which lets us pay a dollar for flame graphics for the flamethrower and pulse rifle. The only difference between that and horse armor is the horse armor cost a bit more.

The new packs will be available on the 13th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Store in Europe, with the rest of the world getting the PS3 versions on the 20th. Hit the jump for a full list of all nine packs, plus two console-specific packs per system. More »

What New Games Excite Dude Huge

There are tons of big games coming out. (There always are!) Gears of War 2 designer Dude "Cliff Bleszinski" Huge gives a laundry list of what's on totally awesome radar:
Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I'm dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid. I'm a fan of horror games — I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great.

Dead Space: Downfall To Air On Encore Action Sunday

Did you love Dead Space, but not enough to shell out $15 for a DVD version of the animated film tie-in Dead Space: Downfall? Well if you receive Starz's Encore Action channel from your cable provider then you're in luck, as the full animated feature will be making its world television premier this Sunday, November 2nd, at 10PM Eastern and Pacific.

“We are thrilled to have the world television premiere of Dead Space: Downfall on Encore Action,” said Nancy Silverstone, vice president of program acquisitions for Starz Entertainment. “The feature sets a new standard for animated horror that our audience will love. It provides the story thread from the comic books to the newly released game, using the background and sound design from the game and the same artistic spirit of the comic book series.”

The feature starts up where the Dead Space comic books left off, leading up to the beginning of the video game storyline. If anything, it's bound to be 10 times more entertaining that anything else on television late on a Sunday evening, and there's also DVR in case it airs past your bedtime. More »

Dead Space Review: True Stories Of Space Horror

Space is a frightening place, even without the monsters; a soundless, airless void where nothing can survive. Even in the most well-fortified spaceship, you're still moments away from death. Science fiction movies and novels have explored this primal fear on numerous occasions, with classics films like Alien capitalizing on the fact that the only thing more hopeless than being trapped with unidentified flesh-hungry creatures is to be trapped with them millions of light-years away from home.

Now EA hopes to translate that experience into a video game with the release of Dead Space, a twisted tale of horror, madness, and betrayal set within an abandoned deep-space mining colony. Have they succeeded in creating something truly terrifying, or does Redwood Shores' effort evoke more laughter than screams? More »

Dead Space, Army Of Two, Battlefield: Bad Company Sequels Planned, Sun To Rise

According to EA Games president Frank Gibeau and EA Redwood Shores general manager Glenn Schofield, EA is planning on producing sequels to recent hits Army of Two, Battlefield: Bad Company and Dead Space. We'll agree that it's about as shocking as finding one's nose still attached to one's face, but it illustrates just how important original intellectual property is to the company. That's why they've been doing all that brand building recently, y'know.

In recent interviews with Variety, the two EA bossmen loosely confirmed plans for new franchise iterations, with Dead Space looking to have its property further whored out to toys, novels and even a big budget, live action movie. More »

All The Ways To Die In Dead Space

This here is a video compilation of all the death sequences found in Dead Space. The majority of them are decapitations or involve several limbs being chopped off. However, there are some pretty creative ones as well, particularly the sequence starting at 3:28 (which is also my favorite). Be warned though, this video does contain spoilers from boss fights, so you may want to wait until you complete the game. To be on the safe side, I put the video after the jump. Oh, and make sure you enter Ash's contest, too! More »
