While it's a shame you won't be able to game, not gaming because you'll be in Australia is not a bad deal. Have fun under the sun and soak up some rays while us New Englanders are stowed away inside or on the cold mountains.
@TexasJack: yeah, my cousin's boyfriend has been in basic for a while right now, i'm sure it's freaking killing him only because he probably doesn't have access to any games.
@Cerabret100: Basic must be horrible. Then you have to go to your advanced personal training(can't remember what it's called, just that they train you for your specific MOS). Since I never enlisted in the military, I can't really say what you are and are not allowed to have, but I think all they let you have is a laptop with cruddy net access(one of my closest cousins was in the Army, and we communicated very sporadically via MSN while he was in training).
For those that do not know what an MOS is, see this link. [www.wisegeek.com]
It sounds like an ideal opportunity to crack out a PSP for the downtime...
That said, I wouldn't want you to miss the giant poisonous spider waiting under your toilet seat due to you being distracted by a speed-run on half-minute hero!
@RemyTheGambit:Sam Fister:
@Cerabret100: lol... come on, Australia, especially it's rural areas, are famed for gargantuan killer spiders, the likes of which plague the sewers of Raccoon City! It's common knowledge!

@Mardoch: I work just a simple entry level office job, 9-5, but it's been so busy lately trying to do a bunch of last minute stuff for the managers and directors, and this will continue through the end of the year.
I don't blame them for it because they are really busy too, but they get to take vacation time but I have to stay in the office as layoff-protection.
@-MasterDex-: Or a DS for that matter. Although I guess what Brian means is he won't get proper "console" gaming... and i guess besides some slow moments won't be able to play handhelds either.
I just got an elite... I've long decried the 360 for its reliability, but the demographics here are so weird - I hang out with one person with a PS3, and something like 7 with 360s, so I figured I'd take my chances so I could finally play something online with them...
It draws an impressive 85-95W, and runs very quiet except the DVD drive. I'd tested older 360s that drew closer to 300W (much like my large BC non-Emotion PS3). I'm hoping with less power to dissipate, it should be less likely to overheat / desolder... still, it's a 360 so I'm not overly optimistic - these things are terminally ill out of the box. #daynote
@fuchikoma: I'm also that 1 guy in a group of friends with a ps3, but they all ended up changing their tune when the large gang of exclusives started to fall out of the sky this year. :/ Now I wont feel so special and going against the grain. #daynote
@Ribbuku: i have a older, refurb one - while it does make noise (the dvd drive) it's drowned out by the seemingly endless white noise my apartment generates anyway...so it all works out in the end!
@fuchikoma: I got a new elite as well. I noticed the power brick is a little smaller. Also its pinned in a way the new power adaptor will not fit an old 360 but an old power adapter will fit the new elite(used with the old one before I realized they were different).
Yeah, the freezing is def a prelude to 3 red rings of death.
Ok, Sunday night my Xbox fizzled and got the 3 red rings, but yesterday morning I tested it out again after calling Xbox support and it works now, and is playing great actually. But the thing is I was OKed for a shipping return to get a replacement, but now I can't exactly do that. My 3 year warranty ends next month and I have a non-hdmi pro system. Is there a way I can red ring my system for good so I can get a newer system sent to me??? #daynote
@Sharkey1337: Use the tower trick on your xbox and leave it on all night. That might work.
edit : be sure to have a game running in the drive as well. Something like GTA IV or fallout 3 should do fine.
@Sharkey1337: Get a hair dryer or put in a crappy game that you don't care about start playing it while the towel is tightly wrapped around the console. Use more than one towel if necessary, the more insulation the better. Make sure that sucker isn't getting ANY airflow.
Once it dies, throw it in the fridge or freezer or outside, where ever you can to rapid cool it. Rapid cooling will help to prevent the solder from reforming a proper circuit again. If it still works after that, rinse and repeat until it permanently red rings.
also, leave it in the cool area for a little bit, don't take it in and out periodically or else you'll start getting condensation on the inside and MS won't repair it if they see any signs of water damage.
@Adhominem: Sheesh, is it possible for the freezer to cause water damage if you're not careful? Seems like if I'm not too careful I could bust it in ways I don't intend, and thus maybe void the repair...=( #daynote
@GangztaX: Ah, I might try that. I've been trying to play it to death with long gaming sessions when I can, but the damn thing hasn't frozen once since it RROD, grr... #daynote
@Sharkey1337: haha, just insulate the crap out of it until it RRODs permanently, might take you a couple of temporary RRODs to get the big kahuna. #daynote
@Adhominem: Awesome, well thanks guys and wish me luck!!! If anything I can always trade in my 360 at gamestop and get $95 in trade I can put toward a new Arcade System with a new 3 year warranty #daynote
@Sharkey1337: They send you a refurbished unit though, so you could get an even older/more likely to break model.
My newest Xbox was the one I actually bought from the store, the two that I've received since then were manufactured more than a year earlier. #daynote
@VBerg: Hm, wasn't too sure as I got a new unit when my xbox RROD last year, of course I bought my original at the end of 2006 so it'd make sense for them to send me one manufactured in 2008. #daynote
You're an editor for a major video game blog. I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't let your console die... publicly. They'll stealth send you a new console and backup tools then tell you to go along with your business. All free of charge. Long live press privileges! =/ If only that was true.
@deanbmmv: I'm a teacher and a dork. I've been known to walk around in the room wielding a meter stick as a katana, swiping it at students and saying things like, "You can't sneak up on a ninja!" #daynote
hey mine too! i turn it on, it shows red rings. I leave for 10 minutes, and its fine. back up and working. just to test it, I turn it off and it locks again... is this related to the new update? I never had problems with it before... #daynote
@WhiteMåge:
Mine had the same problem. . . but clearing the cache didn't solve anything because it was actually the GPU deciding that it wanted to end it's life in as spectacular fashion as possible.
It gave me a hell of a show to remember it by, the water on the ground in the favelas in COD4+2 was flashing different colours right before it finally kicked the bucket.
First generation hardware, eventually it's going to just die. #daynote
@KingMongoloid: How, pray tell, does one go about doing that? I'm sure it's easy, and I may have done it, but I want to make sure. Thanks for any help. #daynote
@KingMongoloid: I'm pretty sure you can just select your hard drive under storage options and then hit Y. It should show you an option to clear the cache.
That link you posted is pretty old and states the 'code' will remove your updates as well. #daynote
@Monoxide1: Yep, there's no need for a code. That might have been the way in the past, but I think the one button fix came with the NXE update rendering the code obsolete. #daynote

I'm getting a job in federal law enforcement, it's 16 weeks of training, that's atleast 16 weeks of no consoles AKA 16 weeks of hell. =(
But it'll be worth it in the end. =)
