@Esper_tricks: I don't see this happening. The demand for the DSi cannot possibly be that high. With over 20 million of the previous iterations sold, how many people honestly need to upgrade?
There will be a good amount of gamers, but I can't imagine the casual market SCRAMBLING for this from day one. Casuals are fine with their DSlite. Casuals don't understand why you'd even need another, and Casuals especially don't understand why you'd pay $169.99 for it.
There will be a strain on them, but "wii-like"? absolutely not.
@nago: are you kidding?? I already have a huge reserve list for this at my store. Almost everyone that comes in asks about it, and seems interested in it. Very few people have actually scoffed at the DSi. The casuals are VERY into reserving it. :D
As for Ninty "not having enough" to go around at holiday- we all know that's a line of BS. ;) It's all part of the retail game.
@Menolly: "Ninty"? Are you AUS or UK? I'm speaking purely from a US standpoint here, and I know it may get a lot of pre-orders but honestly I just can't see the DSi selling out "like the wii", especially since the DS and DSlite never did...
I'll eat my hat if I am wrong.

I always advise people to buy early. One of the things that people don't seem to understand is that factories are producing constantly; they don't peak and trough. So we're producing product all the time, but then everyone wants it all at the one end of the year. It's just so hard to try and keep up.
@ReedF**kingRichards: The question is why don't they peak and trough. Everyone knows that there will be a spike in hardware purchases at christmas even more so than in software, so why not by out a couple more factory spots for the run up to Christmas? A great many parents will end up buying DS Lites for their kids because there are not enough DSi's to go around and that is nintendo losing £50 each time it happens.
I know that they are financially bomb proof at the moment, but they really should be making hay while the sun is shining before boom turns to bust and I run out of cliches. :p
Ok I know a lot of people do it around 3 months early. But 8 months that's ridiculous. Jeez Yarnton sounds like someone who's going to soon say buy your Christmas presents for 2012 before Christmas this year.
@WhatTheFrag: A textbook example of "christmas creep" in which the holidays begin more or less earlier every year.
Personally I can't stand it; Christmas should be a special day or maybe two. As it stands now we might as well rename December "christmas month" and before long November will be Christmas month eve...month.
Makes me all the more glad I don't watch TV, or there'd be yet another source of media bombarding me with crap I don't want to hear about. The internet is all I need, thanks :P
I've read a good number of these comments and I'll say this.
I agree that Nintendo for the most part, has been what they have always been, releasing Mario, Zelda, SSBB, Mario Kart and Metroid within the first two years of the Wii's lifespan.
Yes it's also true that third parties are full of shit when they release shovelware on the console and then bitch about how nothing sells on it compare to Nintendo made titles.
But I also blame Nintendo because they gave us (the core gamer) too many "more of the same" games. We got "another" Zelda, "another" Mario Kart, "another" Metroid but nothing that really stood out from what he got on the GameCube or the 64 before it.
Sure, these games had the usual Nintendo polish but it was just too much of a case of "been there, done that." I actually looked forward to the Wiimake of Metroid Prime than Metroid Prime3. It's sad. I'll probably never finish Mario Galaxy because it feels like a game I already played before on 64 and Gamecube.
Is it all Nintendo's fault, no certainly not. Nintendo is still one of the best developers in the world. But 3rd parties as a whole are just fucking pathetic this generation and not just on Wii. This will be forever known as the "patch happy, Nickel and Dime" generation.
Staying on point...Nintendo's business acumen is superb. They created a market that the competition ignored. They now command the industry at the head of the table. But the recent statements show that even Nintendo realizes that core gamers can't be ignored or it all ends in tears in the long run. From a gamer's perspective, personally, it's too late with two exceptions. If Nintendo can capitalize on these two exceptions then they may have something...
The Conduit
Monster Hunter 3
Those are the only two reasons I still own a Wii. Sin and Punishment 2's trailer looked like shit so don't even go there. Punch Out looked ok but The Conduit and Monster are potential killer apps.
It's true that they have delivered on almost all their major IPs this generation, already. They didn't ignore us. What they did was create a niche that caters to third party developers who ignore us. Microsoft and Sony have a similar amount of first party releases per year (actually, probably a little better but...) while establishing their systems as catering to hardcore gamers. That creates an environment where third party devs can come in and know that if they make a stupid, silly, shovelware product we will ignore them entirely. Nintendo has not created such an environment, and so with no third party support to speak of, Nintendo's games are the only ones hardcore gamers have to play, and it appears that there is a massive gap between titles. That gap should be filled by the third party.
Nintendo isn't ignoring us, but they certainly created this situation for themselves.
Their development cycle is screwed up. They shotgun their regular old titles all in a quick period of time, then essentially make us sit there for 2 years while they reload.
Then again, you can't stretch a few titles out THAT far as to cover that.
I am not satisfied however with the first party Nintendo titles anyway. Each one has given me an experience that was about as next gen as an old sock. It felt like I was playing gamecube games... with motion controls.
I am much more interested in third party titles, though I do know why big third party titles aren't hitting the wii, and understand. They are putting more effort into 360 and ps3 titles because they can push things and make something that is advanced and new, rather than develop last gen games with waggle.
@Demonbird: I'd rather wait while they polish games then have themm shoved out the door earily just the meet a release date.
I love Zelda: WW, but they could have done better. There was too much space between islands and not enough to do on the way, and the fire and ice mini-temples where just sad.
Personally, I don't see why more big 3rd party titles aren't coming to the Wii. It's less powerful, but the PS2 was sadly under powered by compairson to the Xbox and the GC, so that really isn't an issue. Furthermore, they are spending a ton to make games, that even if they go multiplatform, still ahve a smaller install base then the Wii. It seems to me, they are just pouting because they would have to compete with Nintendo and not kick their games out to door and patch them later.
"I'd rather wait while they polish games then have themm shoved out the door earily just the meet a release date."
I'm not saying they should push things prematurely, but just that they shouldn't have them all come out in a 6 month period every 3 years. Spread them out.
And unfortunately, the wii to 360/ps3 is not the same difference as it is with ps2 to gamecube/xbox. It's closer to the difference between something a bit more powerful than the dreamcast to the xbox.
the third party devs can simply do more with the 360 and PS3. The added processing power makes a huge difference. Just look at dead rising on 360 and on the wii. It is the exact reason why devs are putting more big titles on the 360 and ps3.
I havent turned on my Wii for months. right now im busy alternating Fable II with Dead Space and already got Little Big Plante and Fallout waiting for my full attention, and pretty soon Resistance 2 and GOW2 among others. I think im not "core" enough for Nintendo. Too bad, I wanted a smile on my face.... :(

Seriously? March? Really? Nintendo must really be desperate in this recession or something... though I really don't see why they would be.
To be fair though, it's not like the guy was saying go buy now....

Did you know that, at least where I live (US), it costs about $75 to get a DS repaired?
...But only about $90 to get a brand new factory certified DS Lite, and you still get to keep your old one, too?
One of the many interesting things I've found out about nintendo recently.
I know have yet another DS...

I see a "Wii-like" DSi shortage this year.
