how do people become fans of games that have never proven themselves and are still far from release? this type of hype phenomena has always had my puzzled. #halloween
I'm kinda liking the retail box DLC. But it is going to get people not in the know to thinking they are buying a full fledged expansion. This is rarely what DLC is about. They're more smaller content upgrade packs. When I think of Expansion, I think of Bloodmoon or Tribunal. 8-20 hour games for 30 bucks. When I think of DLC, I think 1/2 the price and 4-10 hours of gameplay tops.
It'll be curious to see how this changes when it goes retail.
This is a terrible birthday present, Microsoft. Kindly delay it and announce Lost Odyssey 2 to come out on the 28th instead. :P
Seriously, though, I wasn't too big a fan of Gears 2's multiplayer. I only played it back at launch before all the patches came out, so I don't know if it's changed much since then, but the whole "4 on 4, no respawns" gameplay isn't really my style. Horde mode was great fun though.
Well, you'll have to forgive me for not remembering exact numbers for a game I played maybe 15 matches on total, the month it was released. :P
Honestly, just never held up compared to Halo for me. I prefer the looser more freeform movement in the Halo games when it comes to multiplayer shooters.
@Archaotic: The multiplayer still sucks hard. They now have a 1 second delay before you can shoot or melee out of the roadie run. So, if you hold down that "A" button a second too long while trying to dodge a incoming shot, beware, as you will know have a full second of not being able to do jack shit.
Also, the lag is still atrocious, maps are still stacked with enough explosives to kill 20 man teams, even though its only 5v5, and the country filter is a piece of shit. All in all, the game is still at least 2 more major title updates away from even being as enjoyable as the first game.
It should be called Gears of War 2: Unreal Tournament Edition... everything sounds like it came straight from UT3, even the suits that their wearing in the pic, looks like they came straight from UT3.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...don't remind me. Half the reason I'm not a fan of Gears is because Epic shifting focus to Gears of War effectively nailed shut the coffin on Unreal Tournament, which has been my favorite FPS series since the 90s. :[
@soddice: Dude I still play UT99. Easily one of my favorite FPS of all time.
@Archaotic: That pisses me off to no end as well. UT2004, while good, wasn't quite as good as 99. UT3 just didn't do anything for me, and it really looks like Epic's focus is straight up Gears for the near future. It really is sad to see one of the greatest PC FPS franchises of all time be so neglected.
@DragonYen: Well if you play MP a lot. $20 dollars isn't much compared to how many hours you can pull out of it. At least that's how I see it. Really, $20 is a drop in the bucket. $20= 2 lunches at most vs. 50+ hours some people can get out of it.
@DragonYen: I'm ok with it, I haven't bought any Gears maps yet because I don't spend a lot of time playing the game. $20 for all those maps? Count me in.
@Apo7heosis: I agree... but I already bought the other map packs for 20$ -- Epic has taught me a valuable lesson. From now on, no DLC will be baught until it's been out for a minimum of 3 months. By then I should be able to get it cheaper (Epic) and Bug Free (Bethesda) -- well ok, at least less buggy :)
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: It's right in the article you didn't read :p : "the package also contains an introduction from Cliff Bleszinski for "Road to Ruin", a collectible poster, a strategy guide, and a custom Xbox Live theme."
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: Uuuh..."The Dark Corners DLC will also be available for download via Xbox Live on July 28th for 1600 Microsoft points, which is also $20."
Although with that price point, you're better buying the retail version and getting all of the extras. I don't understand why the cost of the digital DLC is the same as the retail one when you don't get some Dude Huge with it...
@NeVeRMoRe666 RROD'd and is sad: Yeah, normally you must pay for the privilage of Dude Huge! But seriously that's the thing I don't understand. I enjoy the service of Xbox live for the most part, but stuff like this and Xbox originals that cost 15 bucks when many of them like Halo 1 and Fable 1 are "Best of Platinum Hits"(yes that's a real title) and only cost 10 bucks in the store annoy me. In this Gears situation the same price thing is a little understandable as they want to keep retailers happy, but in general I thought digital distribution was supposed to save us money because publisher's won't have to pay for packaging. I'll stick with physical copies of games if this is the case.
By the by, Ben Folds would probably crack up at this. He's recently divorced and has a song on his new album called "The Bitch Went Nuts". I love it, classic stuff. It's a return to the good old Folds uptempo wisecracking smartass form, highly recommended for anyone who liked Rockin' the Suburbs or any of the Five albums. Divorce is always a sad thing, but damn if it didn't help bring back the Folds I love.

Sometimes it's the other half of a game - the world/premise - that draws people in, not just the game play.
You can have an interest in something that hasn't come out yet. But when it's being defended... then it's a little strange. #halloween

Redeemer, anyone?

The Redeemer is the best weapon in FPS history.

Agreed. Epic should remember where they came from. While they're at it, why not bring Jazz Jackrabbit to PSN or XBLA?

Is it basically the multiplayer portion of the game on a disc? Or is it full of download code leaflets?

I think Epic just believes we're the dumbest consumers on the planet.
I mean, when they feed PC gamers this line as to why Gears 2 won't be on their platform:
"..the guy who knows enough about PCs to upgrade their GPU to play Gears on the PC is tech savvy enough to pirate the game.."
Then yeah, they think we're pretty dumb.
And I too am sure this will sell like hotcakes. Maybe Epic is onto something here..
