Eagle-eyed Kotakuite Jeff caught a listing on D3Publisher's website for Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad, an Xbox 360 exclusive version of the game. Control both sisters, Aya and Saki, as they strive to save the earth from zombie infestation. A special dress-up mode allows you to unlock special costumes and outfit the girls as you see fit, so I'm pretty much sold already. Others might enjoy Story Mode, Free Play Mode, Survival Mode, and Quest Mode, but I'm all about playing dress-up and then showing off my outfits via co-op multiplayer.

D3Publishers is being a bit sneaky with this one, as I found no mention whatsoever of the game outside of their page, but we'll be sure to update you as soon as we have info on a release target, more gameplay details, or pictures of the pretty, pretty clothing.

<![CDATA[ D3 Publisher: Boobs, Sheep, and Aliens, Oh My! ]]>
At this year's E3, D3 Publisher had several offerings to show off, ranging from kiddie show spin offs and more Naruto games to M-rated boobs and gore, as well as the 'spiritual successor' of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. While I passed by the Naruto games due to time constraints and lack of interest, I did look at five other games: Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, Onechanbara, Ben 10: Alien Force, Bangai-O Spirits, and Shaun the Sheep. Hit the jump for some art assets from the games and impressions.

A 'Spiritual Successor': Puzzle Quest: Galactrix:

The most obvious changes in this semi-followup to Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords are the space theme and the new circular game space, which allows for some interesting mechanics that are a slight-but-satisfying shift from the typical match three rules of play. As is obvious from screenshots, Galactrix has a galactic setting, with spaceships, stars, and planets. In this incarnation, players can have up to three ships with various capabilities and stats, so they can swap up play styles easily throughout the game.

I found the new layout of the play area, now in a circle shape, interesting — instead of falling down in a straight line, game pieces can slide in from all sides. The direction from which they slide depends on how you play your line of three (or however many) — while casual players probably won't notice this feature, it does add an extra bit of strategy. The game is due out in the first quarter of '09, for PC, XBLA, and DS.

Aliens for the Kiddies: Ben 10: Alien Force

Ben 10: Alien Force is a Cartoon Network property that features a kid (the titular Ben) who, while on summer vacation, comes to possess a watch known as the Omnitrix. The Omnitrix allows Ben to transform into a variety of alien forms in order to battle evil and save the world. A game based on the series (Ben 10: Protector of Earth) was released last year, and Ben 10: Alien Force is seeking to follow up on the apparent success of that game.

The game is an 3D action-brawler; it features 5 playable characters. While only Ben can transform into aliens, these aliens are selectable and each have unique qualities. The Wii and PS2 versions will feature a multiplayer coop mode; the DS version more strongly resembles a side scroller, but does feature three exclusive aliens. The game also features puzzles, though it was mentioned that it is not a puzzle heavy game — the focus is supposed to be on accessible, fun gameplay, estimated at 6 to 11 hours if one is breezing through and not focusing on collecting all the unlockables.

The game will see an October 28th release, launching simultaneously on the DS, PSP, Wii, and PS2. Yuri Lowenthal, the voice actor for Ben in both the cartoon and the game, wandered over to offer some thoughts on the challenges of recording for games — namely, most sessions are done alone, sometimes with very little context for what is going on beyond the actual lines.

My, That's Some Rack You Have: Onechanbara

Despite the enthusiasm of the person demonstrating this Wii game from Sandlot, which was compared to Earth Defense Force, I came away pretty unimpressed regarding this hack and slash — and I do love me some ridiculous hack and slash games every once and a while. 'It's like playing a cult-following B horror movie!' cried the demonstrator as he hacked and slashed his way through hordes of zombies with the Wiimote. It certainly had enough ridiculous costuming, jiggling cleavage, and blood to qualify.

The game features two sisters, Aya and Saki; players can choose to play as either and also engage in coop modes. Perhaps the most 'interesting' feature is the 'blood coating everything including your character' aspect of the game — if your sword gets covered it blood, it becomes dull and starts getting stuck in your zombie enemies. You must clean the sword off to return your weapon to its slashing glory. Furthermore, your character can become completely coated and go into a special rage mode, doing tons of damage ('The developers really like this because she looks naked!').

The game only has a Wii release planned in first quarter of 2009; it will be a 'budget title' and clock in for less than $59.99, actual price not yet decided.

Classical Shmup: Bangai-O Spirits

A follow up to Bangai-O, a side scrolling shmup released for the Dreamcast and N64, Bangai-O Spirits is a pretty retro looking game that features some playful technology. Featuring over 160 levels with an old school arcade feel, most of the presentation focused on the level editing and sharing capabilities.

Every level can be customized as you play to tailor your play experience, and for those among us who like creating things, levels can be created and shared. The interesting part is the delivery method, known as 'sound load.' It was a little hard to hear in the D3 room, but as a level was saved, it was possible to hear a sort of melody. This melody — the level save — can be uploaded or saved to computer as a .wav file. To transfer a saved level to the DS, one plays back the .wav while using the DS microphone. I didn't get an exact explanation of precisely how all this works, and it does seem ripe for mistranslation somewhere, but it's a cool idea nonetheless.

The North American release features some exclusive content, including eight all new levels and can support one to four player local wifi play. It will be released August 12th, and will be going for $29.99.

Baa, Baa Black Sheep: Shaun the Sheep

OK, I love sheep. I think real sheep are pretty cute, if kind of stupid, and really like the variety that don't barge through fences (i.e., trapped in a video game). Shaun the Sheep is an animated series from the Wallace and Grommet people, Aardman Studios — shown on Disney in the US, it's now getting a darling DS title to go with its adorable show. These are really, really cute sheep, and I had to stop myself from squeeing when the DS was fired up to demonstrate the game.

Shaun is a preternaturally intelligent sheep who is tasked with finding fifteen of his less cerebrally endowed herdmates in the game; the puzzle/adventure title is, unsurprisingly, being marketed as family friendly and fun for kids. Shaun features lots of mini and micro games and lots of cute sheep. The nature of gameplay is designed for kids, but also won't bore the pants off adults, especially those who are fans of Aardman productions.

The game will be released for DS on September 23rd and will retail for $29.99 — and feature lots and lots of cute and fuzzy sheep. Lots of sheep.

<![CDATA[ D3 Publisher's E3 Line Up - Onechanbara And Friends ]]> After announcing that they're bringing the bikini-clad, cowboy hat-wearing, zombie shooting Onechanbara to North America yesterday, does D3 Publisher have any other games featured at E3 that really matter? I suppose it depends on who you ask. Me? I'm excited about Puzzle Quest: Galactrix for Live Arcade, DS, and PC, but I am the puzzly sort. Anime fans might enjoy Naruto: Clash of the Ninja Revolution 2 for the Wii, though I'd say we're all wishing they'd just advance the storyline already and give us some new characters in the states. Same with Path of the Ninja 2 for the DS. The new Bangai-O Spirits certainly isn't anything to sneeze at. Ben 10: Alien Force? Shaun the Sheep?

I suppose once you announce a game where a scantily clad woman gets splattered with zombie blood the rest of your line up looks a bit pale by comparison.

<![CDATA[ Bikini Zombie Slaying Comes To America With Onechanbara ]]> Finally, D3 Publisher of America has come to its senses! We don't want your Dark Sectors, guys; we want your poorly animated super soldiers shooting giant bugs and gooey zombie killin' adventures in combat inappropriate clothing. We want that mind-numbing stuff. That's why we're so pleased to learn, via GamesRadar, that Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers will be coming to the Wii in early 2009.

Sure, it wasn't my most memorable experience at Tokyo Game Show last year and these games aren't exactly "good," but you can dispatch the undead in bikinis, biker outfits and barely legal schoolgirl get-ups. We're willing to sacrifice our joints to over-waggling if it helps convince D3 to bring Onechanbara VorteX over here.

Onechanbara's coming to the Wii [GamesRadar - thanks, Jeff!]

The Japanese hack and slash and tits and ass flick based on the D3 video game of the same name will be screened Friday, June 20 at 10:45pm and Wednesday, June 25 at 4:00pm at the IFC Center in New York City. Brain activity will be checked at the door.

<![CDATA[ D3 Does Ben 10 Again ]]> ben10af.jpg The Ben 10 cartoon series recently relaunched as Ben 10: Alien Force, featuring a more mature Ben and Gwen teaming up with enemy Kevin Levin to form a super team of sorts, kicking all sorts of alien ass and garnering an absolutely huge ratings boost for Cartoon Network. D3 Publisher is ready to cash in on the hype with a follow-up to last year's Ben 10: Protector of Earth titled, aptly enough, Ben 10: Alien Force. Grandpa Max has gone missing, the world is in danger, and it's up to those three plus five of Ben's new forms to save the day. The game is being developed for the Nintendo Wii, DS, and PlayStation 2, with a release date sometime this fall. While I enjoy the hell out of the cartoon, the last game failed to please the fanboy within. Perhaps the second time around they'll get it right?

D3PUBLISHER OF AMERICA TO WOW GAMERS THIS FALL WITH VIDEOGAME VERSION OF BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE, THE NEW CARTOON NETWORK SERIES

The successful inaugural game for the brand, Ben 10™: Protector of Earth, launched in October 2007 and has sold more than one million units worldwide. Based on the next generation television series launched on Cartoon Network last month, BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game begins five years after Ben put away the DNA-scrambling Omnitrix, but now Grandpa Max has gone missing and the planet Earth is in grave danger. Gamers must help Ben take the Omnitrix out of retirement and lead eight different playable characters—including cousin Gwen, enemy-turned-ally Kevin Levin and five of Ben's brand new alien forms—to utilize their all-new super powers and defeat the intergalactic invaders! BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game is slated to ship to retail outlets across North America in fall 2008.

"BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game is the only console videogame that allows players to take command of the ALIEN FORCE team to authentically control and experience their brand-new superpowers," said Alison Quirion, vice president of marketing, D3PA. "Based on fans' warm reception of Ben's newest adventures and the impressive million-plus unit sales of the first Ben 10 videogame, we're confident that our latest collaboration with Cartoon Network on BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game will prove even more successful."

"BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE set records as the most-watched original series premiere in Cartoon Network's history, winning its timeslot when it debuted, and each week the series continues to grow as destination viewing for kids," said Christina Miller, vice president of consumer products for Cartoon Network Enterprises. "The release of BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game this fall will build upon the success of the first videogame by expanding fans' experience with the brand and giving them a new battle to win with Ben."

In BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game, players work to find Grandpa Max and stop a diabolical Highbreed alien plot as they battle more than 20 types of enemies, including Highbreed invaders and DNAliens. Gamers take control of Ben and his new alien forms Swampfire, Jet Ray, Humungousaur, Spidermonkey and Big Chill to employ distinctly different and complex powers to manipulate fire, swim underwater, grow more than 60 feet tall, stick to walls, fly at mach speed, plus lots more! Gamers will also harness cousin Gwen's new talent to create an energy shield and use it to protect and attack, as well as Kevin Levin's ability to absorb materials like concrete, wood and metal to create an impenetrable shell on his body. BEN 10 ALIEN FORCE The Game is a fast-paced, 3D side-scrolling action adventure that offers eight playable characters, an unlimited combo system and puzzles and challenges that will engage players of all levels for hours at a time. The Nintendo DS version will offer alternate playable alien forms including Goop and Echo Echo, giving players additional unique powers to command and explore.

BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE The Game for Nintendo DS is under development by 1st Playable Productions, LLC. All other versions are under development by Monkey Bar Games™. The game is currently rated "RP" ("Rating Pending") by the ESRB.

<![CDATA[ Dark Sector Launch Trailer ]]> Here's the launch trailer for D3Publisher's Dark Sector, and while the gameplay still strikes me as a bit unexciting, the cutscenes certainly seem to pack a punch. This is one of those releases that is going to have me extremely conflicted. Not so much interested in the single player, but the multiplayer sounds nifty and the storyline and voice acting might be just enough to tip me over to the purchase side of the fence. It's one of those games that will have me at the game store on the 26th, endlessly picking it up, getting halfway to the register and then putting it back down again. The GameStop employees absolutely love me. ]]> Fri, 21 Mar 2008 09:20:05 MDT Mike Fahey http://kotaku.com/index.php?op=postcommentfeed&postId=370664&view=rss&microfeed=true <![CDATA[ XBLA Puzzle Quest Expands ]]> Xbox 360 owners won't have to wait for the upcoming Galactrix to get their Puzzle Quest fix, as D3Publisher announces Puzzle Quest 1.5, and expansion pack due out this spring for Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. Don't like the name Puzzle Quest 1.5? Starting today at noon central, fans can head over to www.puzzle-quest.com and enter their name suggestions for a chance at leaving their mark on the franchise. The expansion features an all-new storyline involving Lord Bane's brother, Antharg, the Lord of the Plague, who is a bit pissed off that you killed his bro with glorified Bejeweled. The game takes you into the newly uncovered Southern portion of the map, and features over 25 new quests, more than 50 new spells, 40 new items, plus new monsters and bosses to take on. The expansion also features four new player classes - bard, rogue, ranger, and warlock - which should prove just as entertaining and refreshing in multiplayer as they will in single player. I suppose now I am going to have to spend hours and hours leveling up my new rogue once the pack hits, No word yet on pricing, but where my PQ addiction is concerned, money is no object.

<![CDATA[ Dark Sector Multiplayer Gimped On PS3 ]]> D3 Publisher has dropped details on the two multiplayer modes included in Dark Sector, revealing a slight gimping of the game on the PlayStation 3 versus the 360. While the Xbox 360 supports Quick, Custom, and Ranked matches, the PS3 will only allow you to search or create games. Boo! As for the game modes themselves, in the Infection game mode, one player takes the role of super-human main character Hayden while up to nine others play members of the Lasrian military, trying to take him down. When one of the troopers takes Hayden down the match ends, with the killer stepping into his super-powered shoes the next round. The second mode, Epidemic, features two teams each with their own Hayden, with rounds ending when a Hayden is brought down. Interesting choice, taking two game modes traditionally tacked on to multiplayer shooters and making them the focus. Hit the jump for more details.

Dark Sector - Multiplayer Features

Game Types - Dark Sector's multiplayer is broken up into two distinct game types: Infection and Epidemic.

Infection - The Infection game type is a match between Hayden and the Lasrian military. One player assumes the role of Hayden while all others (up to nine) assume the roles of Lasrian Troopers. Hayden is considered the infected target, and it is up to the Troopers to bring him down. Once Hayden is brought down ("finished"), the Trooper responsible becomes infected and a new round begins. A match will run until either time expires, or a set number of points are reached. The ultimate goal of an Infection match is to have the most number of points when the match is over. Points are granted to Troopers by either stunning Hayden, finishing Hayden, or assisting in bring Hayden down and points are awarded to Hayden by killing Troopers (Troopers can lose points by committing suicide).

As a Trooper, the player will be armed with either an assault rifle or a shotgun, have a couple grenades, and one proximity mine. Troopers can only attack Hayden, and so they can either work together (communicating via a shared chat channel) or go solo. In order to bring Hayden down, they must inflict a set amount damage which will stun him, and then, while he is stunned, perform a "finisher." The Trooper that performs the "finisher" becomes infected and plays as Hayden in the next round.

As Hayden, the player has no allies, but is armed with a Tekna 9mm, the Glaive, all three Evolutionary Powers, and any weapons dropped by the Troopers or lying around the various maps. Hayden also has access to the elements fire, ice, and electricity (depending on the level) to use against the attacking Troopers.

Epidemic - The Epidemic game type is a team based match between the Lasrian military, and the Agency. Players are divided into two teams where (on each team) one player assumes the role of Hayden, and all others assume the roles of Troopers. Matches end based on a time limit, or point total, and rounds end whenever a Hayden is brought down. Team points are awarded whenever an opposing team brings down the other team's Hayden, and individual points are awarded to players based on kills and assists (players can also lose points by committing suicide). Players can only communicate with other players in the same team, and can only attack players on the opposing team. Both the Troopers and the Haydens retain the same functionality they have in the Infection game type.

In both game types, players will respawn at designated spawn points when they are killed.

Multiplayer Customization

On the X360, MP games can either be played using Xbox Live, or System Link. On the PS3, MP games can either be played on the Playstation Network, or LAN.

Each multiplayer game type supports up to ten players and has access to five different maps. The maps are unique in size, detail (such as weather effects), and layout. For example, the map called the Deck promotes a more close combat oriented play style, whereas the Court promotes a more team-based play style with its symmetrical layout and numerous opportunities to surround opposition. Multiplayer games can also be customized in terms of time limit, number of players, score limit, and the existence of bots.

Leaderboard

A Leaderboard is available for both the PS3 and the X360, however the X360 board uses TrueSkill™ rank and the PS3 uses a traditional scoring system. A player's score on the board (either PS3 or X360) is based on the multiplayer game performance game performance.

PS3 vs. X360

Both systems will allow players to create, join, and search for multiplayer games. However, only the X360 gives players a Quick game option, a Custom game option, and a Ranked game option. The Quick game option will pick a game for the player based on their preference of Infection or Epidemic. The Custom game option allows players to set up their own games with the customizable settings of time limit, score limit, number of players, and the availability of bots. Ranked games are directly linked to the X360 Leaderboard. A player's performance in a Ranked game will determine their position on the X360 Leaderboard. The PS3 allows players to search for or create multiplayer games.

<![CDATA[ Bangai-O Spirits Coming Stateside ]]> bangaiodcbox.jpgA happy day for fans of the Dreamcast classic Bangai-O, as D3Publisher of America and lovable, cuddly Japanese developer Treasure announce the DS version of the game for North American release later this year. Combining two of Treasure's greatest strengths - puzzle games and shooters - the original Bangai-O was one of the developer's most definitive titles. The DS version features local wireless co-op gameplay for 1-4 players, a powerful level editor, and probably the neatest feature of all - level transfer using sound. The level editor saves files as sound, which can then be transmitted to other DS systems via the built-in microphone, or save them on a PC for upload and sharing via the internet. Players can even use this Sound Load feature to transfer gameplay footage, which means someone needs to come up with a flash app that translates the sound files and set up a website ASAP. Bangai-O Spirits should be hitting US shores sometime in Q2 2008.

D3Publisher of America and Renowned Japanese Developer TREASURE Bring Nintendo DS Game Bangai-O Spirits to North American Markets

New Sound Load Technology Allows Data Transfer Via Sound Files for the First Time Ever on Nintendo DS Handheld Systems

LOS ANGELES—(BUSINESS WIRE)—A jewel of a game will cross the Pacific and delight gamers as Bangai-O Spirits was confirmed today for the North American market by D3Publisher of America, Inc., a publisher and developer of interactive entertainment software. Bangai-O Spirits is a compelling blend of twitch-fest shooter and puzzler genres, seasoned with strategic and tactical elements. Developed in the eccentric, much-loved style of TREASURE Co., Ltd., it is a re-imagination of their '90s cult classic game Bangai-O, perfected for the Nintendo DS™ handheld system. Bangai-O Spirits will incorporate a powerful level editor tool, as well as revolutionary new technology known as Sound Load that allows gamers to transfer data among DS systems via sound files—a first for DS handheld systems. The game is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2008.

"It is an honor to bring a ground-breaking game by a respected developer like TREASURE to North American game enthusiasts," said Yoji Takenaka, chief operating officer, D3PA. "Bangai-O Spirits contains many key elements that define a truly enjoyable videogame—the innovation in both technology and gameplay make this a must-have title for everyone who owns a DS system."

Bangai-O Spirits provides gamers with addictive shooter gameplay, punishing supermoves and a sensory overload of fireworks onscreen, with strategic and tactical elements and TREASURE's quirky design style. The game also offers co-op, competitive multiplayer for 1-4 players via local wireless, a powerful level editor tool which allows players to edit in-game levels or create new ones from scratch, and the revolutionary new ability to transfer data among DS systems through sound data transfer technology known as Sound Load.

Never before utilized for DS systems, the Sound Load technology in Bangai-O Spirits allows players to transfer level data among DS handheld systems via the use of sound and the DS microphone. This technology works by taking the level data and turning it into a sound file which is output through the host DS speaker. This data is then interpreted through the microphone of the recipient DS, and the level transfer is complete!

It is also possible to upload and circulate sound files of level data from Bangai-O Spirits online via the Internet, or to save files to a recording device like a PC or jump drive for transport and distribution, allowing gamers to catalog, share and compare levels online easily with gamers all over the world! Widening the range of play and interaction even further, gamers can also deliver high score and gameplay footage as transferable sound files by using Sound Load. More details about this unique feature will be forthcoming soon.

Bangai-O Spirits for Nintendo DS is developed by TREASURE Co., Ltd. and is currently rated "RP" (Rating Pending) by the ESRB.

<![CDATA[ Dead Head Fred Wins First WGA Award ]]> dhf.jpgDead Head Fred has walked away with the first ever WGA (Wrter's Guild of America) Videogame Writing Award. While skeptics like me worry that this award might just be a WGA maneuver to eventually get their hands in the small pockets of video game writers, it's positive to see the WGA recognizing some of the excellent, overlooked writing in video games.

I haven't played Dead Head Fred since E3 '06—when I enjoyed it quote a bit. So would anyone else like to share some of the game's more quotable lines in the comments?

D3Publisher of America and Vicious Cycle Software's Dead Head Fred™ Wins WGA's First-Ever Videogame Writing Award

Writers David Ellis and Adam Cogan Are Recognized by the WGA for Their Outstanding Achievement in Bringing Dead Head Fred to Life

LOS ANGELES—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Dead Head Fred, the critically acclaimed videogame created specifically for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) by publisher D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA), and developer Vicious Cycle Software, Inc., has won the Writers Guild of America's inaugural Videogame Writing Award. The 2008 Writers Guild Awards for outstanding achievement in writing for screen, television, documentary, radio, promotion, and videogames during 2007 were announced on Saturday, February 9th.

"D3PA and the entire Dead Head Fred team at Vicious Cycle are all very grateful and humbled by this award," said Yoji Takenaka, executive vice president and chief operations officer, D3PA. "We look forward to bringing fans many more top quality games and continuing to elevate the standard of game writing in the industry."

Developed by the WGA and spearheaded by the Guild's New Media Caucus to encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, improve the status of writers, and foster uniform standards within the gaming industry, the WGA's inaugural Videogame Writing Award spotlights quality work by videogame writers, raising their profiles, and validating their contributions to this rapidly maturing medium. The WGA Videogame Writing Award honors the best qualifying script from a videogame published in the previous year.

"Being nominated along with so many top caliber writers for the first WGA Video Game Writing Award was an honor in itself, so it's fantastic that we won," said Eric Peterson, president and chief executive officer, Vicious Cycle Software. "Dead Head Fred was something we had a lot of fun with and we are glad that players and fans are enjoying the game as much as we do."

The company will also be releasing video games based on Aardman's popular Shaun the Sheep character in 2008, alongside the eagerly-awaited follow-ups to the best-selling Ben 10 and Puzzle Quest.
*twitch* Follow up to Puzzle Quest? More Puzzle Quest for me? I mean, you guys can play it too I suppose, but not as obsessively as I will. Why are they burying this amazing news in the middle of a ho-hum manager appointment press release? No offense to Mr. Roberts, who I am sure will do a bang up job, but D3 needs to get their announcement priorities straight. More Puzzle Quest!
Adam Roberts joins D3Publisher of Europe as Managing Director D3Publisher of Europe Ltd (D3PE), a publisher and developer of interactive entertainment software, has announced the appointment of Adam Roberts as Managing Director.

<![CDATA[ Naruto: Ninja Destiny Looking Fine ]]> You hardly ever see Nintendo DS trailers at the correct resolution, do you? Developer Tomy worked hard to make the U.S. release of Japan's Naruto: Shinobi Retsuden smoother, prettier, and an overall better experience, and they want to make sure that comes through in the video. From what I've seen of the retooled Naruto: Ninja Destiny they've done a fine job. Unfortunate that they choose my two least favorite characters to show it off, but I suppose Rock Lee and Spooky Sand Guy are better than nothing. Yeah, I know he has a name. Sandy or something. I'm slowly warming to Naruto - don't push me. ]]> Mon, 04 Feb 2008 11:20:12 MST Mike Fahey http://kotaku.com/index.php?op=postcommentfeed&postId=352315&view=rss&microfeed=true <![CDATA[ Tomy Brings Improved Ninja Destiny In February ]]> ninjadestiny.jpgQuite surprising for an anime license, the Naruto series has spawned some really excellent games both in the U.S. and Japan, though the Japanese release of Naruto: Ninja Destiny as Naruto: Shinobi Retsuden was pretty mediocre, with a crawling frame rate, poor graphics, and an extremely limited cast of characters. Rather than release the same crap stateside secure in the knowledge that Leaf Village headband wearing fans everywhere would buy it anyway, developer Tomy went and fixed it first.
"We've listened to the fans and made a slew of improvements to the Japanese original, including a much faster frame rate, additional characters, and never-before-seen content," said Laura Yoshioka, director, consumer software of TOMY Corporation.
The 3D fighter now boasts an impressive 16 different characters, with storylines up to the 140th episode of the anime, which I am about 80 episodes away from seeing currently. The new and improved Naruto: Ninja Destiny will be in stores next month. Much love to Tomy for going above and beyond for the U.S. release!

<![CDATA[ D3 Partners With Illusion ]]> d3illusion.jpgD3 Publisher is having a pretty good year, thanks in no small part to some excellent game publishing choices in the form of my beloved Earth Defense Force 2017 for the 360 and Puzzle Quest for everything that plays games. Now they've made another wise move, signing a publishing deal for the a next-gen game from the Czech Republic's Illusion Softworks of Hidden and Dangerous and Mafia fame. The game is based on an entirely new IP and is in development for the 360, PS3, and PC.
"We are thrilled to partner with D3 not only because they publish excellent games, but also because they publish a more streamlined portfolio of products, with any new and original intellectual property they commit to becoming the central focus of the company," said Petr Vochozka, CEO, Illusion Softworks.
Of course there is no information on what the new IP is or what type of game it will be, but both companies have excellent track records to date, so we should look forward to something special, or be terrifically disappointed.

<![CDATA[ The Police Negotiator ]]> And the quirky DS games don't stop! This time, it's Simple DS Series Vol. 25: The Koushoujin from D3 Publisher. Players take on the role of a police negotiator who has to talk crooks into dropping their weapons. To be totally persuasive, check the bad guy's background info and scan with a remote camera. The crook's data sheet tips off players so they know the right things to say and get the criminal to surrender peacefully. There's a countdown clock for added pressure! Players are then ranked and judged on things like their leadership ability, how calm they are, etc. Off-beat, sure, but this game seems pretty neat. How about a localization, D3?

<![CDATA[ Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire ]]>

The promise of many sword swinging games for the Wii doesn't inspire one with a great deal of hope for developer creativity, nor does budget publisher D3Publisher's track record—though that Earth Defense Force series is a real champ—force me to stand up and take notice, but I'm going to give the newly announced Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire the benefit of the doubt. It actually looks pretty good, like a softer, gentler God of War for the Wii crowd. Graphically, it's got its ups and downs, but it looks like a possible contender.

<![CDATA[ Ben 10 Protecting The Earth This Fall ]]> ben10logo.gifWith the initial rights agreement announced back in early February, D3Publisher of America is moving right along with the Ben 10 property, announcing a game coming out this fall called Ben 10: Protector of Earth for the Wii, PS2, PSP and DS. The game will feature all of the characters from the Emmy-award winning cartoon show, and hopefully a fair amount of the personality. Without the personality, games like this suck.

The DS version is being worked on by 1st Playable of Puzzle Quest fame, with all other developing duties going to High Voltage, makers of the Family Guy game. Oh boy.

After my initial posting about this game I went and bought the entire first season on DVD, so now I'm going to be even more upset if they take this charmingly quirky license and mangle it beyond recognition. I warn you D3 Publisher, should you fail you're in for one hell of a strongly worded letter.

D3Publisher of America to Bring Cartoon Network's Hit Show Ben 10 to Video Game Systems This Fall with Ben 10: Protector of Earth

LOS ANGELES —(Business Wire)— D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA) announced today that it will bring Cartoon Network's hit original series Ben 10 to video game systems for the first time this fall with Ben 10(TM): Protector of Earth for the Wii(TM) home video game system, PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo DS(TM) portable handheld system and PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) system. In Ben 10: Protector of Earth, players take on the role of Cartoon Network's popular everyday-kid-turned-superhero, Ben Tennyson. Using the power of the Omnitrix, which has embedded itself on Ben's wrist, players will be able to battle as one of five popular alien heroes from the show - soon to be revealed! By taking on these amazing powers, players can save the world through the game's diverse challenges, puzzles and skirmishes.

"Ben 10: Protector of Earth authentically portrays characters from the hit animated series, including Ben, Gwen and Grandpa Max, evil Kevin 11, the Forever Knights and even Ben's arch-enemy Vilgax," said Careen Yapp, vice president of licensing and business development for D3PA. "The Omnitrix's most popular alien heroes will be accessible as playable characters, and a familiar summer vacation storyline including all-new locations and content for players will immerse gamers in Ben's world like never before!"

"Taking the action-packed world of Ben 10 to the next level and creating an immersive gaming experience for our fans is really exciting for us," said Christina Miller, vice president of Consumer Products for Cartoon Network Enterprises. "D3PA has a proven talent for turning Cartoon Network's popular characters into authentic and well-designed video games. The variety of powerful action play in Ben 10: Protector of Earth will engage players of all levels and keep them coming back."

At first glance, 10-year-old Ben looks like your average, everyday kid, but upon closer inspection it's plain to see he's the world's youngest action hero, stopping evildoers from Earth and space! With the help of the Omnitrix, Ben can transform into heroic alien forms with extraordinary powers. The evil Vilgax, with the help of Kevin 11 and the Forever Knights, has set in motion a plan to capture the Omnitrix and the world is in danger ... Ben 10: Protector of Earth is an exciting game full of familiar characters on a quest to stop Vilgax and save the day!

Ben 10: Protector of Earth for Nintendo DS is under development by 1st Playable Productions, LLC. All other versions are under development by High Voltage Software, Inc. The game is currently rated "RP" ("Rating Pending") by the ESRB and is slated for release in Fall of 2007.

The Emmy(R)-winning Ben 10 on Cartoon Network has a devoted fan base with over five million boys tuning in each month over the summer and millions more logging on to play Ben 10 games online. Building on that momentum, the network has also announced two long-form movies for the show, which will debut later this year.

The series has also been doing well at retail with a top-selling, award-winning toy line and numerous deals in place for consumer products including sporting goods, apparel and home furnishings.

Cartoon Network (CartoonNetwork.com), currently seen in 91 million U.S. homes and 160 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s ad-supported cable service offering the best in original, acquired and classic animated entertainment for kids and families. Overnight from 11 p.m. - 6 a.m. (ET, PT), Cartoon Network shares its channel space with Adult Swim, a late-night destination showcasing original and acquired animation for young adults 18-34.

<![CDATA[ Gallery: PSP Cube ]]> Cube is a unique action puzzle game due to hit the PSP next month, featuring the titular hexahedron navigating through 135 levels, one side at a time. The cube moves by flipping over onto its side, and can stick to any surface it touches, allowing for some dizzying movement in 3D space.

If that description doesn't do it for you, just imagine it's Atari 2600 Adventure finally getting the 3D treatment. It has a cube and keys...close enough.

The game is coming from D3 Publisher, whose last two games, Earth Defense Force 2017 and Puzzle Quest, completely ate my weekend. We'll see if developer Metia Interactive can help them bring about the soul devouring gameplay hat trick in April.

<![CDATA[ D3's Earth Defense Forces X Comes Stateside ]]>

Well, I'm shocked. After the American arm of the D3 Publishing group poo-pooed releasing games from the Simple 2000 series of titles that put D3 on the map, it seems at least one of the breakout hits from that line, giant bug and robot shooter Earth Defense Forces X, will make its way across the Pacific.

While EDFX may sport sharper graphics and better production values, it still features the same run and gun gameplay that made EDF 2 a cheapass hit on the PlayStation 2.

Fence sitters who doubt D3's ability to publish anything but T&A-heavy mahjongg games or folks new to the mindless fun that is EDF may want to check out my quick impressions from the Tokyo Game Show. The rest of you celebrate!

<![CDATA[ TGS06: Earth Defense Forces 3 Hands-On Get! ]]>

I love Japan. They have great snacks, the people are exceedingly polite, and companies like D3 make unpretentious (mostly low quality) games like Earth Defense Forces 3. The sequel to the under-the-radar fan favorite is focused on one thing: blowing shit up.

You're a lone agent in the Earth Defense Forces armed with a machine gun and a rocket launcher. With infinite ammo and a giant ant problem, you should know what to do. Whether you're taking down giant robots or alien spaceships, its all about the destruction. There's something very satisfying about firing a tank turret into a sea of colossal fire ants. This is old school gameplay, with a required strong ability to suspend disbelief. I mean, 12 foot tall spiders drop armor and health, people. Take off those thinking caps, k?

Graphically, it's good and bad. Character designs are cheesy, but in a great way. The frame rate is all over the place, which should come as no surprise to EDF2 players, but enemy models and environments are suprisingly detailed for a D3 game.

Hopefully, someone will bring EDF3 outside of Japan, but North American gamers ought not hold their breath.
