[Update]]]> Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and his Massachusetts-based game company 38 Studios have been working on a MMO code-named Copernicus. What platform will it be coming to?

38 Studios has put up job listings for a Senior PS3 Programmer and a Lead Art Director to work on a RPG for the PS3.

The studio was founded by Schilling and has attracted the likes of Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, Everquest designer Travis McGeathy and best-selling author R.A. Salvatore as well as some of the developers behind Oblivion.

Update: These listings are for 38's newly acquired subsidiary Big Huge Games. They are working on transforming the Ken Rolston-led rpg — formerly Ascendant — into a single-player console role-playing-game set in the same universe as the Project Copernicus MMO for the PC. In short, the console versions seem to take place in the same universe as the PC version!

<![CDATA[Game Executive Might Go For Ted Kennedy's Seat]]> "Game executive", "former baseball star", take your pick, whichever one you choose, it's the same guy - Curt Schilling - and he's looking at running for the Senate seat left vacant following Ted Kennedy's passing.

Writing on his blog, Schilling - who founded 38 Studios, a team working on an unrevealed MMO - says:

While my family is obviously the priority, and 38 Studios is a priority, I do have some interest in the possibility. That being said, to get to there from where I am today, many many things would have to align themselves for that to truly happen. I am not going to comment further on the matter since at this point it would be speculation on top of speculation.

My hope is that whatever happens, and whomever it happens to, this state makes the decision and chooses the best person, regardless of sex, race, religion or political affiliation, to help get this state back to the place it deserves to be.

What a world we live in. Schilling has himself down as an independent, but as GamePolitics points out, the guy definitely leans Republican.

<![CDATA[38 Studios Saves Big Huge Games]]> Troubled real-time strategy and role-playing developer Big Huge Games lives on, with Curt Schilling's 38 Studios stepping up at the last moment for a late game save.

38 Studios has purchased Big Huge Games from THQ, adding a huge chunk of quality real-time strategy and role-playing talent to their roster and saving the developer from imminent closure. In March of this year, previous owner THQ threatened to close the studio following losses of $191.8 million in the previous financial quarter. Then came the layoffs. With the purchase, 38 Studios acquires all of Big Huge's intellectual property, development tools, and works in progress, including RPG legend Ken Rolston's upcoming role-playing game.

"It's always about team," said 38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling. "The highly regarded developers at BHG, including leading role-playing and real-time strategy design teams led by Ken Rolston, are a perfect complement to 38 Studios' staggering array of talent. Big Huge Games is a phenomenal team and, culturally, a natural fit."

Big Huge Games will be integrated into 38 Studios, but will continue to operate out of Timonium, Maryland.

Having been eagerly awaiting Ken Rolston's RPG project since it was first announced in 2007, this is welcome news indeed. A feel-good story in a time of industry turmoil. Besides, how often does a star starting pitcher manage to get the save?

<![CDATA[Curt Schilling Retiring From Baseball, Focusing On Game Development]]> Pitcher Curt Schilling has announced he's retiring from Major League Baseball. During his career, Schilling posted a win-loss record of 216-146 and chalked up 3,116 strikeouts.

In his official blog, Schilling wrote: "The game always gave me far more than I ever gave it... The game was here long before I was, and will be here long after I'm gone. The only thing I hope I did was never put in question my love for the game, or my passion to be counted on when it mattered most. I did everything I could to win every time I was handed the ball."

The last game 42-year-old Schilling pitched was in 2007 as he spent most of 2008 on the disabled list. In the meantime, he's kept busy with the game start-up he founded 38 Studios. Now that his pesky baseball career is out of the way, Schilling can concrete on game making. 38 Studios has been creating a MMORPG that code-named Copernicus. Schilling is a well-known for his love of PC title EverQuest. That, and playing baseball.

<![CDATA[Schilling Fields Blizzard And EA Talent]]> Curt Schilling's 38 Studios has just added two new players to its lineup of award-winning game talent, snagging a composer from EA and an interface designer from Blizzard to work on their R. A. Salvatore meets Todd McFarlane MMO project. Most notable of the two new additions is audio pioneer Aubrey Hodges, who was one of the first sound designers to use MIDI in a video game. His work spans the history of the industry, from the King's Quest series to Doom, Quake, and Madden NFL, most recently serving as an audio director with EA Tiburon.

Also joining 38 Studios is Irena Pereira from Blizzard Entertainment, who has spent the past couple of years working on the interface design for World of Warcraft and its expansions. Sounds like 38 is assembling one hell of a dream team for this project. Let's just hope the game turns out as good as the talent working on it.

38 Studios Adds Pioneer Audio Director and User Interface Designer

- Aubrey Hodges and Irena Pereira Join 38 Studios' team of expert game designers -

Maynard, MA – November 4, 2008 - 38 Studios, a pioneering entertainment company dedicated to delivering a broad spectrum of immersive products, today announced that Aubrey Hodges and Irena Pereira have joined 38 Studios as director of audio and senior UI (user interface) designer, respectively.

With his music and sound design heard in more than 180 video games, Composer and Sound Designer Aubrey Hodges is an audio pioneer in the video and computer game industry. Hodges is credited as among the very first to use MIDI in a video game, the first to use sound effects in an online game and among the first to use General Midi in a video game. He also is cited as the innovator of ambient music design for games with his groundbreaking work on the Doom and Quake series. Before joining 38 Studios, Hodges spent five years as an audio director at EA-Tiburon, home of the popular Madden franchise; and before that as audio director, composer and sound designer for Midway Home Entertainment for ten years. Hodges began his career in audio for videogames at Sierra Online in 1991. His music and audio credits span classic series such as King's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, and Conquests of the Longbow to some of the most popular video game series including NFL Blitz and Madden NFL. In his new role, Hodges will report directly to 38 Studios CEO and President Brett Close.

Senior UI Designer Irena Pereira comes to 38 Studios from Blizzard Entertainment, where she spent over two years working on the interface design and development for World of Warcraft and its expansions The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. Pereira also worked at game studio Artifact Entertainment where she was responsible for interface design, technical documentation, tools development, and web site design; and at Verant Interactive. Her experience extends beyond MMOG development to include interface development and web design for online companies Hollywood Stock Exchange, Homestore Inc, and LowerMyBills. Pereira will report to Design Director Jason Roberts.

"38 Studios has been able to attract phenomenal talent, and these hires continue that trend," Close said. "Smart interface design and rich audio are key components of the 38 Studios product vision, and Irena and Aubrey have extensive records of exceptional success in these areas."

<![CDATA[Moore Talks EA Sports Camps, Bet with Schilling]]> wsjmoore.jpg

The Wall Street Journal today examines Peter Moore's new role at Electronic Arts Sports, talking to the new division's new president about how he plans to reinvigorate EA Sports after its first drop in sales in at least seven years.

In it he talks about a lot of the usual things and mentions, in passing, that he plans to announce to analysts today the extension of the NFL contract that I talked with Moore about last night. Moore says the company also recently struck a deal with IMG Worldwide, the New York-based sports-management and entertainment company that represents a slew of top athletes, including Tiger Woods. EA hopes to use this to one day put the EA Sports brand on a "variety of consumer products and services, from soccer balls to tennis camps for kids" in the same way that ESPN now shows up on restaurants and a magazine.

Does that mean there could be an EA Sports Bar in our future?

The article ends with the revelation that Moore recently made a bet with Boston Red Sox pitcher, and fellow gamer, Curt Schilling. If Moore can kick a 50-yard field goal he gets to write Schilling's blog for a day. No word on what he has to do if he loses. Dreads?

<![CDATA[Red Sox Pitcher Talks Game Plan]]> CURT!World Series winning Red Sox pitcher and hardcore EverQuest II fanatic Curt Schilling is getting further into the MMO game—he's making them. Schilling opened his own studio, Green Monster Games, named after the famous green wall at Boston's Fenway Park and is talking about his first project.

Why sink money into this surely doomed venture, instead of some other pro-athlete funded doomed venture? Well, Curt has obviously done his homework!

A lot of people don't realize that video games are already bigger than the movie industry now.

Wow! Didn't know that, Mr. Schilling. Oh wait, I did know that... is not actually true.

Green Monster Games plans to ship their first game, a fantasy MMO targeted at casual players, within the next 2-10 years and will feature the artistic talents of baseball fan Todd McFarlane (who previously did work for Ultima Online) and R.A. Salvatore. So what will Schilling bring to the table, outside of a bundle of cash?

I'm making the game, in my mind.

Why do I suspect that's where the game will remain? Best of luck, GMG. With World of Warcraft dominating the crowded market, you're going to need it!

<![CDATA[Ball Player Making Video Games]]>

A comic book dude. A sci-fi writer. And a baseball pitcher. All three have joined forces to create "industry-changing games." Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, author R.A. Salvatore and Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling have formed Green Monster Games, named after the huge left field wall at Fenway Park. Schilling is a diehard MMORPG player and has appeared at EverQuest conventions. Details are scant, but McFarlane will be the company's lead artist, Salvatore will be creative director and Schilling will be Schilling.
