Ok, if I can player poker with my bridge officers to boost their stats I will buy one of those lifetime thingies, Cryptic. The nuts and bolts of Trek in this game keep impressing me more and more! #startrekonline
Eh... looks like they've fallen prey to the same mistake of most Trek games (as I suspected by one of the previous posts here), which is that the battles are too fast and the ships all handle like fighter jets. Absolutely no strategy involved, and not much in the way of tactics either. Just blast away until the other guy blows up, which seems to take about five seconds. Sorry, that's just not Star Trek. There's a place for games like that, but the Star Trek universe isn't it. #startrekonline
@badasscat: Having played Bridge Commander and a few other ST games that are "slower" I can say they would translate poorly into an MMO game. Espically if your going for the customization that the game is reaching for, having upgrading all ur shit would mean instant win when it comes to a slower paced game from what i could imagine. #startrekonline
I'm surprised there isn't more fan complaint for a Star Trek media product. Say what you will about gamers, but Trekkers are insanely more picky and always want more, more, more! ...despite how much they love to complain about their franchise is dying. #startrekonline
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I agree, I get embarrased myself when I hear some things the avid Trekkies say. I love Star Trek (the shows and the movies, including the new one). But I *hate* the die-hards who wanted stupid things like saying JJ Adrams should've had the new Enterprise bridge looks EXACTLY as it did in the 1960s. Barf. #startrekonline
I was afraid the space combat and travel would be too much like Eve Online – where you have to wait ages for anything to happen. Instead, I was pleased to see somewhat snappy movement and reasonable physics to account for the fact that you're maneuvering a huge starship, not a tiny fighter craft.
I'm confused by this - you seem to be saying two contradictory things here. "Snappy movement" and "huge starship" don't mix.
One of the big reasons almost no Star Trek game has ever been successful in the slightest is that ship-to-ship combat is always terribly unrealistic, and therefore unsatisfying. Not that the shows or movies were always very realistic either, but at least most of them understood the idea of mass.
These are large capital ships that do take time to move around. Combat is less about maneuvering and speed and more about strategy and bringing firepower to bear - more like the way battles were fought between capital ships on the high seas in the 1700's and 1800's. Game developers never treat Star Trek starships that way, thinking it's no fun to fight with capital ships.
Well, all you've gotta do is watch Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to see that that's not true - the whole movie was just a long, drawn-out battle between capital ships (that for once, was actually fought in real 3D). But it's the best Star Trek movie there is. (Yes, I've seen the latest one.)
Just once, I would like to see ship to ship combat handled *at least* as realistically in a video game as it was in the various series' and movies. No Trek game that I've played has done it, and it doesn't sound like this one will either.
And before you say "it just wouldn't sell" - none of the other Trek games have sold very well either. So I'm not sure that argument's very relevant. Why not *try* to actually please the many millions of Trek fans, rather than attempting to make a game for some non-existent mass audience? #startrekonline
@badasscat: It's also the only Star Trek to portray a bunch of crewmen being horribly burned and maimed during combat. It always bother me that the neglect all those crewmen who must be killed each time a phaser penetrates the shield or a torpedo slams into the hull.
Wrath of Khan definitely gets my vote for best Star Trek movie because of how it treats space combat. Huge capital ships shouldn't zip around like fighters like they do in every other Star Trek film. #startrekonline
I'm so excited for this game I could have tribbles. I just hope the story and dialogue are great and feel like the Trek TV series. A great action Star Trek game is one thing, a fantastic Star Trek RPG would be even better. #startrekonline
Sounds pretty nice, but they picked the worst time for a sci-fi MMO, for obvious reasons. At least they might have some solid numbers for several months. #startrekonline
It could be One Million and One if they would sell me one on my X-Box 360. lol. I'm still itching for MMO action on my X-Box. I know I have some prospects for my PS3... but the 360 seems to have trouble actually getting MMO's onto the market. FFXI aside. True Fantasy Online was a victim last gen. This gen we lost the Marvel MMO, the Conan MMO, and Champions is being held up for whatever reason... and Old Republic, an I.P. that started on X-Box, is going to PC first with no word on a console release yet... A.P.B. hasn't hit the PC yet, so no telling if the supposed X-Box version will make it. Word was they wanted to put Star Trek Online on 360 too, but if they don't handle Champions well, the studio may have second thoughts on that. Is it too much to ask to get some X-Box Live MMO loving? :) #championsonline
Best P2P MMO out there right now, despite its occasional server issues. I wish WoW wasn't digital cocaine for some reason, and people could give a good game a chance. #championsonline
Still trying to figure out how cryptic runs their game. I've seen more high level characters with vulgar names and racist names then anything else. And I don't mean minor things, I mean names like "HANGALLNI**ERS" and "IRAPEKIDS", of course fully typed out, not the stars. I played for a few weeks to give it a fair try, but the community is somehow below WoWs. #championsonline
@Nulls: Name me one word that uses the letters n-i-g-g-e-r all in a row that ISN'T offensive. That should have been caught by a program used to prevent the creation of offensive usernames. Regardless of whether or not Cryptic can stop every offensive name from being used, it would not kill them to make a simple effort at banning the most common ones. #championsonline
@msimmons: Okay, I feel like I'm missing something. I got the key, activated it...but I still have to download the actual program from Fileplanet? For 15 bucks?
The industry needs to redefine "Open Beta" and "Closed Beta" if you really think this is an "Open Beta."
Requiring to pay money for a beta is a "Payed Beta" not closed because anyone can get in but not open because it still has a requirement that is not free.
Please, stop calling this an Open Beta, because it is NOT.
@DaveKap: THIS. There is nothing open about this beta, and it pisses me off that they would call it that.
And I wouldn't call the majority of your playerbase not being able to download the PATCH let alone try the actual game "minor snags". I'm a WoW player, I've seen worse. But let's not pretend this is going smooth. My official Champions Online patcher has idle disconnected me five times now... and I tell you with no hesitation that my connection is NOT the problem.

If you reported those people like you should have, then I am sure they would have been forced to change their name or banned.
I think it was probably worse at launch with the wow tourists. I haven't seen any offensive names in a while. #championsonline

A program filter at this point is more of an annoyance than effective at enforcing rules to prevent offensive names.
Such obscene names like these deserve to be handled by an GM and not a program to enforce. #championsonline

Second answer is the one it wants. Enter your email. Worked fine last night for me, and quite a few others.
Patcher is totally broken, and so on. Haven't heard much good about the game - nothing good actually, but I'd like to see for myself. Good luck.
