Is the case of the recession having another game-killing incident?
I know lots of people who played Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. It was pretty much a toss up. Though I did get reactions from people that it was "too slow" etc.
From what I know, Mistwalker's last two games didn't do all that well at retail correct? If so, seems sad considering Da Gooch is the father of Final Fantasy...
2008 is the year of great games that didnt sell well: valkyria chronicles lost odyssey little big planet mirror's edge resistance 2(?wait nevermind, that sold pretty well, i love that game.)
It seems new RPGs aren't enough for either the 360 or, to a lesser extent, the PS3 (yeah White Knight we'll see....). Established franchises do better....especially as the palpable fear of the recession looms over Japan largely....
@BouncingOffClouds: "palpable fear of the recession"? How about just "the recession"?
A bunch of stats came out today showing Japan getting absolutely hammered. Factory output down 8.1% in a single month, which is double the previous record amount. Unemployment up. Spending down. Sales down.
There seem to be people here that still think all these cancellations, layoffs, etc. are due to some irrational "fear" of something that's not actually happening. No, all of these things are due to what is actually happening. It is not pretty out there.
Sorry, but F*** the gaming press for eating up recycled kitsch like Fable 2 and Fallout 3 while ignoring a masterpiece like Lost Odyssey. Sakaguchi is a humble god among developers, yet everyone treats him like yesterday's news. Best of luck to Mistwalker. I can't wait to buy their next game.
@jettokisora: no. Are you one of those guys that think that fallout is oblivion with guns? Also while i hardly ever play jrpgs I bet you I could tell you how the combat works in LO or BD just from playing a bit of a few jrpg's
Having cleared all of oblivion and Fallout 3, Im definately in the "fallout 3 is oblivion with guns" catagory. However, Im going to add one more little bit, Fallout 3 has less diversity as well, its actually a downgrade from oblivion. Zones were ugly, it had maybe 10 enemy types(im being generous) and every zone looked identical.
LO was a mixed masterpiece, meaning that some areas were damn brilliant in every way, then you would run into areas where you were left scratching your head wondering if the budget ran out.(not just graphics, but sound, plot, gameplay, etc...)
In the end, I liked them both, but LO was leaps and bounds better imo.
As for cry on's cancellation, it made me very sad to hear it since I was really looking forward to it. Also, Blue Dragon 2 is a 360 game as far as I know, and im still hopeful for another lost odyssey title. Actually, Im craving any rpg from mistwalker right now.(currently stumbling through White Knight Chronicles and am not very impressed)
@RuneX21: Funny how people who consider Fallout "Oblivion with guns", never stop to consider the changes beyond combat.
Like the fact that the level up system is completely different.
Or that the choices you make actually have an influence on the story.
Or that merchants do not have infinite money, meaning you can't spawn richness so quickly.
Or the whole building weapons thing.
Or the weapons damage dealt to the enemies.
Or the character model and voice difference.
Or the difference in art direction.
Or the radio stations.
Or that the character creation is completely different.
Or that the story mode is actually good in Fallout.
Or that party characters are worth a shit.
Or that Bethesda went through ALOT OF SHIT to guarantee that Fallout 3 would be a worthy sequel to the other two, and that means not including a shitload of new enemies for the sake of diversity, making sure things were true to the universe and pleased most Fallout fans who didn't just "want an isometric RPG with pre-rendered bad sceneries and complex combat from the 90's".
...or the fact that, beyond beying a first-person FPS where you roam a big world, go through a few samey dungeons and kill enemies, gathering and selling items, while using a vamped-up engine, they don't really seem to have alot of similarities.
People usually LOVE JRPGs for being the same recycled random turn-baed battle crap people have been playing for years, and sometimes, different franchises even have the same name for items, stats and enemies along with different games.
Don't criticize Fallout 3 for being a western FPS with some similarities to game style.
Lost Odyssey was fantastic, I don't care what anyone else says. That being said, this game's death wasn't too surprising, as Mistwalker was basically formed to give Microsoft a foothold in Japan. With Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, and SO4, they accomplished that (sorta) so it's no big surprise Microsoft dropped the Gooch like a wet sock once their goal was accomplished.
AQ Interactive isn't rich, but if Blue Dragon and LO are any indication, MS has no problem with funding and financing third party games. Why stop now? It's not like MS cares about losing money in Japan. :P

@NeoNess: Lost Odyssey didn't do very well? When it came out I couldn't find a copy for over a week, and then once I finally found it, it was the store's last copy.

No one with that much heritage deserves it.

Hopefully Mistwalker doesn't tank, due to the lackluster success of their other 360 titles.
