It can't. But this, this is pretty damn close. Here, a gentleman is standing and up and stretching in front of a mahjong game. Remember it's okay to enjoy yourself in Japanese game centers, just don't enjoy yourself in Japanese game centers.

Many thanks to Luke for his Pointing Fish skills! The unfished pic is in the link below and not as bad as you think — whatever that means! Still, it's both a little NSFW and a lotta unsettling.

<![CDATA[ Silent Hill Ringtones From Verizon ]]> silenthillart02.jpg I've been playing quite a bit of Silent Hill: Origins lately and was lucky enough to have met Yamaoke himself at E for All, so when Kotakuite Jesterhead369 dropped me this note in my inbox it piqued my interest. If you have a Verizon phone, you can download several Silent Hill ringtones including the popular Theme of Laura. Each ring will set you back $2.99 for the privilege of carrying a bit of creepy town with you. Unfortunately , I don't have a Verizon phone, but hopefully with the iPhone I hope to get for Christmas and my SH2 soundtrack CD (autographed even!), I can cobble together my own SH ringtone to disturb passers by.

<![CDATA[ Look into J Allard's Eyes ]]> Ha! J, you may ignore our Xbox Live messages and call us "creepy." But there are others who are creepy, too. Take Jeff Minter, who features J Allard in the second part of the Space Giraffe level one tutorial, which is appropriately named "The Eyes of Allard." Yes, Jallard's mug is visible. Thumbs up!!

Thanks, Protector one!

<![CDATA[ Clip: Creepy Dogs Get their Own Island ]]>

You can buy these "The Dog" (breed with giant mutant head) stickers and calendars pretty much wherever there's a Japanese bookstore that has a mechanical pencil rack the size of your living room, but I never thought this kind of niche market could land itself its own Nintendo Wii game. As usual, I was wrong and on top of that, there's even a clip to show how cute (but still very creepy) the game looks.

I'm not running out to buy the game, in fact, I'll probably just sit here at home, but it's always nice to see what is on the radar of Japanese pop culture.

<![CDATA[ Burger King Profits from Your Pain ]]>

Burger King has published its quarterly earnings report today, reporting an $11 million rise in net income over this time last year. The leap is being attributed to the 360 video game promotion, which spurred sales as gamers flocked to chain restaurants to pick up the three King-based titles, presumably being unable to find a sharp enough stick to poke in their eyes instead.

The promotion had me going to Burger King for the first time in years, all for the sake of three relatively abysmal game offerings that creeped me out much more than they entertained. They might have gotten the exact same results had they advertised "Massive car wreck with bodies laying about at every store," which would have the added effect of making their food just that much more palatable.

<![CDATA[ XBL Kidnapper: "If I Weren't In Jail, I'd Be Playing Final Fantasy" ]]> kidnapperxbl.jpg

Disturbed pizza manager Michael Devlin kidnaps two boys, gets caught, put on suicide watch and all he wants to do is play Final Fantasy XI. If he hadn't gotten captured, one shudders to think what he'd be doing. But Devlin says:

I'd be in front of my computer screen playing Final Fantasy XI. I like Final Fantasy because it has a network that can connect to people all over the world, from Europe to Japan.

A ringing endorsement of networked gaming! Ugh. Under the name "DevilDevlin," he used a picture of one of the kidnapped boys for his GamerTagPic. On January 11th, he got in a round of Final Fantasy XI before the children were rescued. But with no FF in the slammer, Devlin's doing things like reading another inmate's copy of Death Wish, the novel which the Charles Bronson films are based on. How's that for prison rehabilitation.

<![CDATA[ Clips: God Of War II Gameplay Video ]]>

While the clip is a little fuzzy, it does give us another look at some of the gameplay for the upcoming God of War 2. IGN has posted a bunch of new screens and hi-res videos, including some interviews and more gameplay. I've watched this a couple of times and for some reason, I can't keep my eyes on the action. All I keep staring at is that creepy statue thing that keeps peering through the windows. It really gives me the willies, like something out of an old Ray Harryhausen Sinbad movie. No, not Sinbad the comedian, Sinbad the sailor.

<![CDATA[ These Games Have Underwear! ]]>

What do Metal Gear Solid and Jet Set Radio have in common? Panty-shots. From the Famicon to the Xbox 360, a Japanese website has complied a list of all in-game depictions of underwear. There are guidelines, such as only glimpses of "pantsu" (panties), that keep thing from being a laundry list of porno games. The page is divided by console, title, character and remarks. Comprehensive and containing games from various consoles, for example:

  • Kingdom Hearts, "Seen from the side when Jane is in the jungle."
  • Hot Shots Golf 3, "An array of colors."
  • Shenmue 2, "Possible to see lots of panties. It's a 'Best of Pants' game. (j/k)"
  • Super Famicon Doraemon Series, "Shizuka-chan. White panties when she jumps."

And you get the idea. We can't decide if the inclusion of Street Fighter II's E. Honda (remark: "Pantsu?") and Ghosts 'n Goblins' Arthur ("Red or strawberry colored pantsu") keep it from getting too pervy or make it all the more.

<![CDATA[ TGS06: The Other Side Of The Lens ]]>

We decided to hit up Cosplay Alley at the Makuhari Messe on the last day of Tokyo Game Show to see how the city's homely kids with sewing skills were faring.

We saw tons of Clouds and Dantes and "men" in schoolgirl outfits, but the lamest thing on display were the cyclopian virginal photographers loading up their 4 gig SD cards with enough wank material to last them through to the next Comiket. The TGS otaku take this whole thing very seriously—do NOT cut in line or they'll have your head.

I really have begun to worry for the welfare of these young ladies, but it's almost like they're asking to be stalked.

<![CDATA[ TGS06: Bring On The Creepy Cameramen ]]>

At Kotaku, we know creepy. While E3 was known for dorky guys posing with booth babes, TGS is more famous for creepy guys with huge creepy cameras taking creepy pictures of booth babes. Good thing the showroom floor is dark, sparing us from seeing their creepy faces.

<![CDATA[ TGS06: We Did It For You, J Allard. For You. ]]>

It's Sunday, the last day of the Tokyo Game Show. But, just because our TGS coverage is winding down, doesn't mean our coverage of J "Too Cool for Punctuation" Allard is. I spent the entire day looking for the shiny headed Microsoft bigwig, but came up empty handed and horribly depressed. But, that doesn't mean we won't stop looking for the eXtreme one and taking pics. Oh no, we just won't be posting them, J.

<![CDATA[ The Creepy Sega Cat ]]>

While Sega did bring us the Dreamcast (and for that, we are forever thankful), they also squirted out this horrible robotic cat (and for that, we are freaked). Sega calls this beast "Near Me," a word play on "nyan," the Japanese word for "meow." GameSetWatch stumbled across the kitty on eBay. The seller states:

SEGA CREEPY CAT ROBOT " NEAR ME " KITTLY RETAIL USD 400 Available only in Japan, New in box

When you touch Near Me that will respond to sound by moving it's head in in the direction of the sound or twitching its ears It becomes a different character by your way to raise it, It doesn't walk but Near Me can mew in several different way

A robotic pet so unsettling that "creepy" is used as a selling point.
