<![CDATA[This Super Mario Bros. Mushroom May Be *Too* Realistic]]> Can't say I'm much of a fan of the mushroom. And were I in need of a height-doubling fungi in order to save a kidnapped princess, I might have a hard time swallowing this disturbingly realistic Super Mario Bros.-style mushroom.

The above creation, from Kotaku tipster and sculptor Jaime (aka "Kalapusa"), fits in wonderfully with the previously featured realistic—and equally disturbing—Piranha Plant. Oh, and alongside the similarly realistic Blue Shell, it's for sale.

Yes, it's a little tiny. But tiny enough to hang comfortably from a Christmas tree branch, if you have such a thing.

Potentially the most exciting news to come of this particular post is Jaime's plan to create a "realistic Baby Metroid in formaldehyde" for a future product. Uh... awesome?

<![CDATA[Handmade Fable Fortune's Tower Card Set: a Limited Edition of One]]> Shawn Baxter, aka the Capcom-Unity all-star contributor Snow_Infernus, thought for certain someone would have made a Fortune's Tower card set based on the Fable II Pub Game. When no one did, he got tired of waiting, and made his own.

The attention to detail put into this thing is simply mindblowing. For the cards, Baxter took photos of the cards from Pub Games, imported the images into Adobe Illustrator, recreated them there, added distress marks and imperfections to artificially age them, and had a print shop specially order a parchment card stock to print up three decks.

But wait, there's more. The chips. Made of wood in the video game, Shawn got his father, a Chicago artist, to create ceramic chips by hand. Shawn redrew the Fable guild seal and had a special stamp created for his father to emboss the chips. Then they were deliberately underglazed to make them also appear old and worn. Then comes the box. Shawn's cousin is a furniture maker, so, boom, he built that to specification, included an old oiling technique to finish the wood and give it comparatively aged appearance, too.

In all, the materials cost $400. That's not what raises my eyebrows; it's the fact this was only a two-month project.

Anyway, Lionhead, Microsoft Game Studios, Molyneux, whomever, now you have your prototype. Make it happen. I don't think Shawn's dad and cousin are taking orders for the rest of us anytime soon.

<![CDATA[Bringing A Little MMO To The Real World]]> With the real world lacking in loot, Marc Owens set forth on a project to make it appear more like an MMO, by crafting himself a suit that would look more at home in WOW than on the BUS.

Owens' built his"Avatar Machine" costume to "[replicate]the aesthetics and visuals of third person gaming, allowing the user to view themselves as a virtual character in real space via a head mounted interface."

Which means...yeah, you guessed it. "The system potentially allows for a diminished sense of social responsibility, and could lead the user to demonstrate behaviors normally reserved for the gaming environment."

That's all well and good, but we just want to know one thing: can you make us one, Marc?

<![CDATA[Pokémon Menstrual Pad, Yours for Eight Bucks]]> If you're an environmentally conscious Pokémon fan on the rag, or know someone who is, have I got the gift for you.

That, dear readers, is a blue flannel custom made Pokémon-themed menstruation pad. Don't worry, Pikachu won't end up like Sissy Spacek in Carrie, he's on the other side of the battle. I think.

I think. Hell, I'm less qualified to talk about menstruation than I am about Warcraft. I haven't had a serious girlfriend in four years, and she preferred tampons. Handmade, washable menstrual pads seem to be a green alternative to buying up Stayfree and chucking them in the landfill. But Pokémon?

Unbelievable.

<![CDATA['Dawwwww' is Not in Scribblenauts, but 'Plush' Is]]> Crafts-maker Rosemary Travale hadn't done video-game related work in about three years, and this week's release of Scribblenauts inspired her to bring main character Maxwell to plush life. Look, he even has a little-bitty notebook and pencil!

Materials: "His gloves are made of plastic vinyl, his clothes cotton, his body is canvas and linen, his rooster hat is fleece and the star is foam."

There are many more pictures at the link below. Travale says, yes, he is for sale - $150. So this qualifies as a big free ad, but the work is so well done, it also qualifies as art.

<![CDATA[Link Outfit Makes Cosplayers of Unwitting Infants]]> This is one part dawwww, two parts badass. Part one, it's an adorable infant's Link costume. Part two: that's a BABY BOTTLE QUIVER on the back. Part three: It's made by someone called "UpKnitCreek."

Unfortunately, UpKnitCreek's not making this available for general sale, as are most homespun game/geek items like this that we usually post. But look at the craftsmanship - and the fact it's accompanied by a Triforce baby blanket, to be packaged up and delivered in a wooden treasure chest. Whichever newborn gets this, he or she is the luckiest baby of 2009. Or ever.

<![CDATA[Custom Make "Any Game" as an NES Cart Necklace Charm]]> We do a lot of free ads for Etsy craftspersons, yeah, but this is pretty good: Old school NES carts are available as mini-sized necklace charms, in hypoallergenic silver if you want to upgrade.

Artist Laura Swingle makes the charms; her page features Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Zelda, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, Metroid, and Final Fantasy. She asks that you specify which game you want, but it's not clear if that's from the catalog photo, or from all available NES games. I'm thinking "PICK ANY GAME" means what it says. If you don't pick, she gives you SMB/Duck Hunt.

The charms are about the size of a penny - tasteful and inconspicuous, but great conversation pieces once they're noticed. $12 gets you one, $18 gives you the silver upgrade.

Come on, mothers carry around all kinds of silly-looking stuff their kids made. Sure, someone else made this, but you would have too if you thought of it first. And could make handbags.

<![CDATA[Could Mii Mittens Possibly Be More Adorable?]]> No. And, my God, do I want to be a baby right now, because I would scream bloody murder until someone knitted me a pair of bulbous, fingerless hand-warmers, Mii-style.

Say, if you have a baby, toddler or infant — or simply know someone with extremely tiny hands — and you have some knitting skills, why not whip them up some Mii mittens? The details on how to do something like this are available at Knitty — and look to have been for some time. Why weren't we informed?!

We're sure that a few of you out there gifted with needles and yarn can do the math required to tailor designer Michelle Hotchin's "Miittens" to regular sized human hands. If so, let us know.

<![CDATA[Sackboy Pattern In UK's Leading Knitting Magazine]]> Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet could be the source of the first major commercial cross-over between knitting and gaming as the UK's Simply Knitting magazine features a professionally created sackboy pattern.

The pattern has been created by "hugely popular" knitted toy designer Alan Dart, and will produce a sackperson accurate down to the fingers. It looks far better than the official toys we've seen so far, plus it's got love in it.

Debora Bradley, Editor of Simply Knitting said, “Sackboy will be tremendously popular and this is the perfect time of year to knit the little chap. Knitting and customizing him means that he will be utterly unique and a very cool accessory. We’re very lucky to have him in the magazine and we hope that he’ll help to increase the already sizable crossover between the great communities of gamers and knitters, online or not.”

The pattern can be found in issue 49 of Simply Knitting. For those of you worried about being seen buying a knitting mag, fellow Future titles Official PlayStation 4, PSM3, and GamesMaster will also carry the pattern. I plan on snagging a copy myself for my mother, who I will then force into heavy-knitting labor in order to build my eBay empire. Insert evil laughter here.

LittleBIGPlanet gets the Simply Knitting treatment

Alan Dart brings Sackboy to life!

09/12/08

Simply Knitting, the UK’s leading knitting magazine has ventured into new territory, and in a flash of cross-genre inspiration is bringing the star of LittleBIGPlanet ‘Sackboy’ to life!

Perfect for both gamers and knitters, the cute star of LittleBIGPlanet has been given the full treatment by Alan Dart, the hugely popular designer of knitted toys – described as “the Grand Theft Auto of knitting” by Dan Dawkins, Editor of Future games magazine PSM3.

Tying in with the launch of Sony’s groundbreaking new PlayStation 3 game, the unofficial pattern will help you bring to life the knitted hero, building on the game’s near limitless potential for players creating and sharing their own custom-designed objects, ideas and levels.

Sackboy can be completely customised and accessorised within the game, so once you’ve got your knitted Sackboy all sewn up you can photograph your finest creation with your PlayStation Eye to put it into the game itself! Simply Knitting’s very own Sackboy can be seen indulging in a spot of the woollen craft!

On sale now, the knitted toy matches the digital version right down to the fingers, so there should be just enough time to knit a Sackboy for the gamer in your life!

Future’s sister titles Official PlayStation3, PSM3 and GamesMaster will also be featuring Simply Knitting’s knitted wonder in their issues, on sale in December.

Debora Bradley, Editor of Simply Knitting said, “Sackboy will be tremendously popular and this is the perfect time of year to knit the little chap. Knitting and customising him means that he will be utterly unique and a very cool accessory. We’re very lucky to have him in the magazine and we hope that he’ll help to increase the already sizable crossover between the great communities of gamers and knitters, online or not.”

Issue 49 of Simply Knitting is on sale now, priced at £4.49.

<![CDATA[Iron Man Lives Again]]> In case you haven't been paying attention, both the Iron Man movie and the game of the Iron Man movie are coming out tomorrow (or tonight at midnight), so you only have a few hours to complete your homemade suit of armor before heading out to the stores. Andrew Le already has his done, having painstakingly crafted this suit of armor in just six days.

What the Armor is made out of is Poster board, what was used was Hot glue gun, masking tape and alot of paint. I started making it 6 days ago, and wanted to be best i can make it.
So what drives a man to spend six days of his time to create this damn fine piece of work out of stuff just lying around the house? The answer, along with more pictures, after the jump.
i just wanted to make it for the movie release and for children to have a hero they can actually see in person :D. I done it because i been a fan of Iron man. I noticed that there nor plans or blue prints to make the armor of Iron man so i made one.
That's one mighty damn noble guy right there. To give the children a hero, because he is a big fan, and because it hadn't been done. Ladies and gentlemen, I have officially been out-Iron Man fanboyed. Check out the gallery for more pics, or visit Andrew's MySpace for a whole slew more. Damn fine work for poster board. I'd love to see what he'd do with more time and better materials. Hulkbuster Armor, anyone? ]]>

<![CDATA[Get Your Very Own Crocheted Prinny/Witzbold]]> Kotakuite BrynnFlynn let us know that there's an eBay auction going on currently for a Disagea Prinny ... or is that a Witzbold?:

I was looking for something new and unique to crochet, and so I thought "Hey, why not make a little Prinny?" A few hours of mad crocheting and accidents later, I had a Prinny from the popular video game series Disgaea. Then I thought, "Hey, why not make it into a Witzbold?" Another hour of messing around with different yarns later, and I had a little replica of the infamous "Banhammer Wielder" from Kotaku.com, the most popular gaming website on the internet.

And there's even a crocheted ban hammer to go with it. Awwww. It can be yours for the current low low bid of $5.99, which is way, way cheaper than most of the crocheted curiosities we post.
