@Ghetto Defendant: We also get it that in one thread he's a trademark-troll-supporting-lawyer, while in another he's a court-ignoring hater. Sounds to me like someone has a lying problem, as well as some underlying Kobe hatred.
When you are famous, you should stick to having sex with other famous people. As soon as you bone an unknown, it makes you look like you're preying on the weak and you glamored them with your fame and fortune only to find out they weren't looking for anything more than a fat stack of bills and at the cost of a funny walk and some publicity.
@Kobun: Proven false? Have you read the transcripts of his police interviews? Even his official apology states:
"Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."
@Gray665: It's called a PR statement. He can't come out and say, "The girl's a slut," without incurring the wrath of many and further tarnishing his name as these false allegations have done. Documentation shows she both slept around and bragged about nailing Kobe to a desk clerk among others.
An apology admits wrongdoing, and that statement does no such thing. Likewise, if you read the transcript yourself, you'll see Kobe details consensual sex even going so far as to offer the police his boxers from the night before. You're welcomed to post a link from the transcripts where Kobe admits raping the girl though, and you should have no trouble finding it since I know The Smoking Gun still has them available.
Remember a couple of years ago when football was something that you really only heard about for 16 Sundays at the end of the year and then a few more if you lived in a city that went to the playoffs? This constant media blitzing of football is getting annoying now and I'm going to be glad when the football fad dies off and people can go back to watching football the first half of the winter, basketball the second half, soccer and baseball during the summer, and ignore hockey. I like football as much as the next person, but I don't care about it from February to about October. I don't need football constantly being shoved down my throat all year long trying to steal the attention away from other sports. It's bad enough they've taken away that specialness of football Sunday by making it so by the end of the season there are games on Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. Football isn't an everyday sport like baseball is. Football is a sport that was driven by the fact that it's season is so compact that in one day a team that looked like it was going to win the super bowl could become a team that might not make the playoffs. And now they are even trying to extend the season by two games.
Now, I know that this is EA's announcement and not the NFL's, but there is no way that this announcement is being made just as the media circus around the NFL draft is putting up its tents.
Oh, and do we really need NFL draft day events at baseball games? WTF? It would be one thing if the NFL draft was in September.
Damn sucks to be Palamalu and Fitzgerald! Good looking cover, but the fact that now they are going to be subject to the curse? Haha.
I don't usually wish bad on players but I want the Arizona Cardinals to FAIL so hard this year. I'm still upset about what they did to my EAGLES in that NFC championship game.
Personally I thought they'd have a down year all year anyway. Warner isn't going to be able to just do 1..2...3... throw to Fitz all year, and if he has more than 5 secs in the pocket where he has to make a decision it's sack city.
Boldin is crying for a new deal or to be traded, and Arizona's cap money is being tied up like crazy.
Good luck Cards fans hope you enjoyed your "world beaters" and time in the spotlight. Cause that fat lady is walking to the stage.
@Akua: While I was living in South America, I was once asked that question. My response was that Americans generally consider it boring. This naturally prompted a passionate response about the excitement of the strategy, the running, the excellent footwork, the trick shots, etc. My response was that, yes, all of that stuff is great, but even the best games usually end up in the very low single digits for score. Americans, for the most part, care about the points not the process. There's a reason why touchdowns are worth 6 points. A score of 21 to 14 sounds much more exciting than 3 to 2.
It's a shame really, because soccer really is quite enjoyable once you get into it. It would also be nice if the US had a team consistently good enough to root for in the world cup. I get too many weird looks wearing my Paraguay jersey every four years.
@Cururu: I think it's moreso the fact that, at least in my opinion, American football can be a lot more ADHD than Soccer. Soccer games can drag at times (this is coming from a guy who played for 16 years as a kid into college), though there are times of action, you have to keep focused on it the whole time.
With American Football, you've got short spurts of action that hardly last more than 15-20 seconds each if you're lucky, with plenty of breaks in between that the people with short attention spans can refocus on something else for a minute. Plus, they'r guaranteed said action because everyone's in a tight enclosed space to begin with.
As far as your question is concerned, more than a good number of people enjoy American football, even people outside of the US (my Canadian brother-in-law prefers it over Hockey! *gasp*).
Sadly, there are times where I think that the only reason why Soccer took off as much as it did is because to several people, it's the cheapest sport to get into (Ball = 15$, Shin Guards = 20$, Cleats = 30$, done), which is why it's the most popular under-10 team sport next to baseball...
@midobustingloose: One could argue that Europeans misunderstand why football may be called football. It could be called football because it's a ball game with lots of running. You know, like a foot race - with a ball.
@Cururu: I would say you're wrong about strategy, trick shots, etc. Most of the football watching audience pay attention to play books, watch the ESPN play dissections, and love the Spartan War Game aspect of the phalanx lining up trying to overwhelm the other army.
What I don't get is why football hasn't gotten more popular outside of the US save a few countries. The only reason I can really see why is the fact that it's one of the more expensive team sports, the belief that rugby(even if it's a dying sport) is manlier because of the whole "lolnopads!," and how much they generalize the actual game.
@Kazzahdrane: Because going padless against 200 to 300 pound men that can hit you as hard as a car at 10 to 15 mph is a smart thing to do. Never mind the fact that even with pads some guys get hit hard enough to shatter bones.
@Cursa: Its funny you say that because its ignorant. If our athletes didn't focus on other sports growing up and everyone was thrown into soccer like they are in other countries America would dominate to the point where other countries would stop playing soccer. Instead of focusing on american football imagine NFL players training for soccer. You'd have the likes of roy williams playing goal, troy polamalu playing center back, and Adrian peterson playing striker
I love proper football more than most americans but it is bombastic to say that we could never compete. We compete now with only average athletes playing the sport. I won't even get into what things would be like if we focused a shift on the importance of basketball in the inner cities to soccer. Just think KG and Kobe playing soccer their entire lives.
@midobustingloose: there's a fanbase for both, worldwide. get over you soccer fanboyism. they're both sports play by extrodinary athletes. don't come on here with your wannabe pseudo-nationalistic pride. take that hate to a soccer forum.
@CriminoleLaw: well, we'll see how that goes in 20 years. not a racist statement, but its known that hispanics really dig "soccer," and their population in america is the only one thats rising at a swift pace.
@Kazzahdrane: yeah because originally, men would die playing am. football. the sport was considered so brutal, it was outlawed in many cities around the country. once they started wearing gear that kept their players from being injured for the rest of their lives... bans were lifted. its definitely one of the most brutal sports out there.
oh and doesnt soccer have professional womens leagues? not am. football though.
@Black-Dog-Howls: actually, i think its called football because the advancing is measured by yards, which ultimately is a bunch of feet. its a measurement thing, not a part of the body.
or the fact that it's the ultimate team sport, no one man can do everything. Try watching and understanding it one day and maybe you'll see, doubt it though
@midobustingloose: I think you missed the post about the footwork. It's okay. Don't worry about it, I know you don't.
So, I guess the part with running doesn't count? Or the men that do footwork for defense? Or, as a poster already put it, measurements?
Both Basketball and Baseball are abstract in name. You're carrying a ball to the basket, that's the goal. You could call it dribble ball, that would be more accurate in a comparison to why Europeans complain about football being called football. In Soccer you're kicking a ball to the goal. Why not call it goal ball? Or kickball?
As i said I used to watch it but it bored me. You stop start and switch players every 2 plays. Whereas with Football its 11 men (plus 2/3 subs) and 90 mins with minimal breaks. I'd love to see AF keep that up.
It's called strategy, it requires a good deal of thinking to figure out the right play by the coaches.
considering how football players are better conditioned because they do more than just run, that would be no problem. Devin Hester would tear up a soccer field easily.
I think that's it for me though, no use in trying to talk sense into someone who finds running entertaining.
@midobustingloose: When I was a kid I liked Soccer more because of that. Once I started growing up I understood a little more about football.
It's a war on the field. You've got your generals on the side line(coaches). On site commander(quarterback). At his disposal you've got a bunch of different unit types that adhere to different styles. The bench is the reinforcements. Defense is the force trying to thwart an attack. The offense are the invading strike force. Special Teams are the special operations guys.
@shouryuuken: Origins of football as i read it in a book, may or may not be true: some doods were playing soccer/reg. football, and one guy got tired of it and picked up the ball and ran. THey started to tackle him. They made basic rules. They played...Maybe the creators never differentiated the names. i dunno, im just sayin.
@Black-Dog-Howls: yeah.. like where the heck does hockey come from? or soccer even? basketball and baseball make sense.. and i think they kind of go along with football.. their names have the origins of how you score in them. gain feet, make baskets, touch bases. but football for the rest of the world... doesnt follow that.. you dont score by hitting peoples feet or something.
@midobustingloose: see thats the 2 different ways to look at it like i just said.. sports generally named by what you do to advance, or what you use to advance. football - you hit the ball with your foot, like you said with handball. volley is to hit the ball before it hits the ground.. so yeah.. volleyball. but with baseball, basketball, and american football.. its all about HOW you score instead of what with.. you score by touching bases, you score by getting in the basket, and you score by advancing the ball a certain amount of feet. makes sense.
@midobustingloose: I´m brazilian, the land where soccer is LOVED by everyone, and I could care less about it. In fact, I don´t care about any sports and I´m seen as an ALIEN by everyone since I was a kid because I don´t have a favorite team or whatever. The only sport I like is playing video games, proper ones, not sports simulation ones! lol
ps: I do have Pro Evolution for the 360 so my soccer addicted cousins can play...
@lucasreis: Your Coke/Pepsi statement is ridiculously false, but, yes, Americans are different precisely to be different. Those changes were a means to establish the nation's identity apart from the hated British once the colonies separated from the fish and chips queen.
This is hardly a theory let alone yours -- history documents these intentional and seemingly unnecessary changes well enough. That said, some other forced cultural inventions such as the short story are worthy contributions to the world at large.
@Kazzahdrane: That's so ignorant. Having played both Rugby and football, I can tell you the way you hit is different. In rugby, most of the time the hits are wrap-up tackles. In football, the hits are usually flat out more explosive:
wait, now EA is getting into the androgynous lead characters too? I guess SquareEnix's growing sphere of influence was bound to have some negative side effects.
@stealthpengu: If those guys are androgynous to you then we need to have a talk about the female figure. I also question what women you've been with......
@Akua: Yeah, I think there is a definite need for some intervention and direction on the female figure, if these guys are androgynous. Not to mention I wouldn't want to be caught dead calling either of them androgynous. I think that would be a one way ticket to the emergency room.
@Dullshimmer: It's the eyes man. The pretty eyes. I mean, look at them eyes. Glorious shimmering pools you could stare into for eternity. Portals right into them beautiful malicious raging souls bent on crushing the opposition all over a brown and white pigskin ball.
I suppose Federer is more well known, but Nadal has recently shown that he is the new dominant player in most arenas. I don't think any good tennis title can be complete without McEnroe *somewhere* in there.

Wow, way to take five seconds to do some research about this game. I like how you instantly jumped to a conclusion about this game using just box cover art.
I wonder how the world would be if we judged all people the same way.
@BobTable4Four: Uhh so the guy wasn't sure if the game used Wii MotionPlus. I don't really see how that's jumping to conclusions and deserving of your response.

Why not call basketball like toss ball?
Why not call baseball something like hit ball?
Using the same argument people do about football you could find a number of problems with plenty of sports.
04/24/09
Those make sense
Basketball - You put the ball in the basket
Football - You kick the ball with your foot
Handball - You throw the ball with your hand
Volleyball - You keep the ball from bouncing on the ground
Beach Volleyball - Above on a beach
Then you get
American Football - You throw the ball forwards to each other. Wait what?
