This year Dahlberg and co. did more than that — they made one hundred gaming cupcakes.

The fondant creations range from table top to video games with a heavy emphasis on retro titles. Dahlberg even has a "quiz" on her site, allowing visitors to play our favorite parlor game, Guess The Cupcake.

<![CDATA[The Giant 1/1 Scale Gundam Statue RETURNS!]]> Missed the 1/1 scale giant Gundam when it was in Tokyo's Odaiba this past summer? It may be long gone, but that doesn't mean the chances of you seeing it are kaput. Far from it!

A Bandai Namco spokesperson has revealed that the huge 18-meter statue will be once again erected in the city of Shizuoka this July — specifically, the east exit of Japan Rail Higashi-Shizuoka Station.

Why Shizuoka? The Production Factory for Bandai's Gundam plastic models are located in Shizuoka. This is a homecoming of sorts. A really, really big homecoming.

Originally, the statue went up in Tokyo's Odaiba last July for the 35th Anniversary of Gundam and was taken done in September. The statue was visited by over 4 million.

<![CDATA[Life-Sized NES Made From LEGO]]> More than that actually — the NES has two LEGO controllers, a LEGO Tetris game cartridge and a LEGO TV.

"So why did I decide to build an NES?," writes Dave Sterling. "I think mainly just to see if I could. I've never done something I would consider ‘art' or ‘sculpture' in LEGO and I really wanted to give it a try and see if I could recreate something directly to scale."

His creation is 1/16th of an inch of the actual dimensions — bravo!

The SNES Portable sports a 2.5 inch screen, and according to darthchris13, the tricky part was getting all the SNES wiring into such a small casing. Nice work.

<![CDATA[You'll Never Guess Who's Directing Warcraft Flick [Update]]]> Well, you might. Who knows. But according to movie news site Ain't It Cool, the director has been confirmed — and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Ain't It Cool is reporting that Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) has signed on to direct the film version of Warcraft. "It [the announcement] will come out in trades later this week or next," writes Ain't It Cool. "But you can take this one to the bank."

The movie version has been in development at Legendary Pictures for several years now.

Not official confirmation by any means. Stay tuned!

Update: Variety has confirmed that Raimi will be helming the picture. Legendary Pictures and Blizzard will be collaborating with Warner Bros., who will be co-financing and distributing the film.

The movie will be produced by The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven. Blizzard's senior VP of creative development Chris Metzen will co-producer. Raimi is supervising the film's development while shooting Spider-Man 4 next year.

"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

The official press release refers to the move simply as "Warcraft" and not "World of Warcraft".

<![CDATA[Sony Motion Control Patent Shows Coffee Mug Gaming]]> We know about the EyeToy. We've seen that motion controller Sony showed at E3. But there is another motion controller Sony has been working on.

This new patent filing reveals a Sony motion controller that uses a mapping system to incorporate everyday objects such as "coffee mugs, drinking glasses, books, bottles, etc." as a motion controller. In the drawing, those everyday objects are illustrated by that horse-shoe-looking U in the man's hand.

Basically, this tech appears to allow players to use a variety of real world items in game play.

To map the object, players show it to the camera and rotate it so that the object is captured and saved as a file. The system can then identify this object and respond to its movements.

The manner in which the object is held can affect game play. For example, in the illustration below, the object is held "up" which reveals the lightsaber-like sword. Holding the object down turns the sword "off".

<![CDATA[Playing Super Mario Bros. On A Theremin]]> The theremin isn't only good for playing "Good Vibrations", it's also good for playing Super Mario Bros. — not just the music, but the game itself.

YouTuber conquerearth explains how it works:

The sound from the theremin is split into its frequency and amplitude components in real time, which are then mapped to values in a linear scale representing the X and Y axis. Pitch becomes horizontal control, and Volume becomes vertical control.
The X and Y scales are then cut up into different zones. In this case, Left; Right and dead zones for the horizontal, and a single trigger and dead zone for the vertical.

The trigger zones are then mapped onto a virtual joystick hooked into an emulator.

The end result is a fairly usable input control for playing games like mario. The bars give the much needed visual feedback as to how "in tune" you are, so you have a better feel of where the trigger points are.

As conquerearth points out, it's possible to control the game with your voice or even a guitar or a violin.
