Konami Sexes Up Contra Promotion In Japan

Go for the groin! That's Konami of Japan's marketing motto, apparently, as it's pitching the overseas release of Contra 4 with a simple formula. They're deploying "Contra Girls" to the editorial offices of outlets like Impress Game Watch to get Japanese gamers interested in WayForward Technologies' old-school style shooter. Seems to be working so far, as the staffers at Game Watch can't possibly dress up like that at work everyday. More »

Konami Launches Manliest Game Site Ever For Contra 4

Housewives and little girls would probably run in fear at the pure Flash-based display of testosterone on hand at the new official Contra 4 web site. It's loaded with massive pecs, animated rocket launchers and a hefty dose of explosions. In fact, just about everything you do on the site is cause for a new explosion. It's got all the standard web site stuff—wallpapers, galleries, details on the game and its characters—it's just got a bit more masculinity than your average promo site. Guaranteed to put some hair on your chest. More »

    Contra 4 Hands On Again

Not much has changed with WayForward and Konami's Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS, but attendees of E For All got a chance to spend time with what appeared to be the final build of the side-scrolling shoot 'em up sequel. Yes, it's still pure run and gun action, bringing hardcore, old-school Contra gaming to the DS, but now it's more complete. Having bested the first level, after burning through many a credit, at E3 this year, I found working my way through the jungle themed opening level just a hair easier. That means it wasn't blindingly difficult but just challenging to make a grown man cry. The second level? It felt near impossible. More »

Contra 4 Dated And Box Arted

Wayforward's Contra 4 is bringing back old school, Red Falcon ass-kicking action to the Nintendo DS and it looks like they're doing it next month. Marketing materials look to have made their way into the hands of one NeoGAF member, listing a launch date of November 13th and showcasing Contra 4's exceedingly masculine cover art. Guns, flames, rocket launchers, chiseled pecs—how much more manly could it possibly get? Check out the full sized version, which also features a burning skeleton! If I weren't sporting an intense hangover, there would be lots of head-banging and home office trashing. I'm that pumped up. More »

Konami Mobile's Contra 4 Character Contest

Marking the 20th anniversary of the series, Contra 4 is coming to a mobile device near you this fall - and you can be a part of it! Konami Mobile is holding a Contra 4 character design contest, which calls on fans to design a new character that "demonstrates the true meaning of the classic Contra game," which if I recall correctly is either 'Aliens suck' or 'The scatter shot supersedes friendship.' Submit a winning entry between now and October 1st and you have a chance at getting your character in the game, along with a game credit and a Contra 20th Anniversary designer's award, with the top 20 designs getting a credit and a t-shirt. You'll have to beat me, of course. I'm thinking camo pants, a tank top, a headband, and combat boots. I can't lose! More »

    Contra 4 Hands-On Impressions

Konami and WayForward Technologies' Contra 4 brings so little to the Contra formula, now 20-years long in the tooth, that the game plays like a Super Nintendo-era release. And that's a good thing. I played through the first level of the Nintendo DS game at Konami's E3 2007 bungalow, running and gunning my way through the jungle themed throwback to the NES/Arcade original. How does it play? It's Contra. Pure, unfiltered, high-test Contra. More »

    Contra 4 DS Looks Amazing

Konami's announcement of Contra 4 didn't (initially) make with the passionate burning of the nerd loins, not like a flamethrower weapon upgrade would. It was a Nintendo DS game—which is fine, but I was looking for something a bit prettier—and it was from WayForward Technologies—nice folks, I'm sure, but they've got Ping Pals on their products page. 1UP's new preview of Contra 4, however, changes everything. Konami Reveals Contra 4 DS

Contra has needed a real sequel for a long time now. It's been fifteen years since the release of Contra III: Alien Wars, and since then we've been getting nothing but crappy attempts as bringing the series into 3D and the ridiculously difficult Shattered Soldier for the PS2. Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the series that made run n' gun gameplay what it is goes back to its roots with Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS, developed by Wayforward Technologies and due out later this year.
