TigerDirect yesterday announced that they will be snatching up CompUSA instead of letting the PC store go out to pasture. The agreement, which will be closed throughout the first quarter of this year, includes the purchasing of the brand, trademarks, e-commerce business and some of the actual stores.

"We believe the value of the CompUSA brand remains very high. The company has a long legacy of value pricing, service and customer loyalty among consumers nationwide," said Systemax CEO Richard Leeds in a statement. "We view this acquisition as a strong complementary business to our TigerDirect operation."

Man, I wonder if they're going to cancel some of the gi-normous store closing sales going on right now? I was just over at my local CompUSA yesterday and picked up a couple of things, including a new keyboard. All of their games were 15 percent off.

<![CDATA[CompUSA Shutting Down Retail Stores]]> Retailer CompUSA will be closing its 103 brick and mortar stores, giving gamers one less physical option for getting their hands on software, hardware and accessories. Reuters reports that the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim sold the retail chain to Gordon Brothers, who will oversee the liquidation of store assets. That could mean slashed prices on video games, computer hardware and consoles. CompUSA hasn't quite been the destination of choice for core gamers, so I doubt most readers who aren't currently employed at a location will have many tears to shed for the store. However, frequent visitors may be able to find some deals in the wake of store closings.

<![CDATA[Auto Assault Bargain Binned]]> img271.jpg

Found amidst memo stickie pads, ballcaps and the countless other useless crap that fills a CompUSA bargain bin: Auto Assault.

Wow, I still say the game is fun, it just suffers from terminal bad-timing syndrome. If it has come out before World of Warcraft or perhaps next year, it would have done much better.

<![CDATA[CompUSA: Buy 40" HDTV, Reserve A PS3]]>

Fry's Electronics PlayStation 3 Bundle. Cheap at $1079.

Wal-Mart "Customer's Choice" PlayStation 3 Bundle. A steal at $1491.

CompUSA Screwjob PlayStation 3 Bundle? A minimum of $2300. Oh, the pain.

Found via blog Uninnovate (but scooped by the Cheap Ass Gamer forums), the current promotion running at CompUSA demands that, if you want to buy a PS3 from the retailer, you'll need to invest in a Sony branded HDTV, 40-inches or bigger. (I already ordered three.)

Also, according to Uninnovate, should you return the TV you "must also return the PlayStation 3 and pay a 15% restocking fee". I can't imagine anyone having a problem with that. You guys cool?

Sony taking Playstation 3 pre-order bundling to new lows at CompUSA [via Gamespot]

Update: Angry reader e-mail after the jump...

I was taken in by CompUSA's "buy a 40" HDTV", get a PS3 Reserve on Sunday. I called back today to find out that my PS3 will be delayed 4-8 weeks, and it would cost me 15% (about 300) to return the TV with restocking fees. If this was a Sony-CompUSA deal, what a joke. I ordered from the Schaumburg, IL store. Thanks for alerting other gamers to this despicable scam.

Ouch! Sorry, Jim! Keep your head up, rest of the console reserving public!

<![CDATA[Circuit City, CompUSA Employees Both Locked Out From PS3/Wii]]>

Remember the Best Buy employee pre-order lockdown? Well, it seems like they're not alone. This may be news to you (unless you're an employee), but both Circuit City and CompUSA both have policies in place already that prevent workers from buying the PS3/Wii. If they get caught, they're "immediately fired."

Apparently they had this in place last year for the Xbox 360 launch, but we all saw how well that worked. We mean really, if these employees can ask their wives to go pick one up for them, that's nigh unenforceable. Apparently for Circuit City, sales associates were barred from buying one until after Christmas, and they were never officially given the OKAY to do so. Poor, poor CCers. Maybe your dancing Santa can bring you one.
