Nazi censorship is still ridiculous, but I think THQ are the silly ones in this case. You can't have a(nother) WWII shooter without even calling them Germans. For some reason I think we all know who was fighting who.
@RawnevetSbboD: Although replacing history with Ultraman sounds awesome, Chinese history books mention the 1912-1949 period and tell of the heroic struggle for freedom and eventual victory for the Communists.
China is now preparing for the 60th anniversary of the Communist party and PR of China. There's a huge clampdown on criminals, as nothing must interfere with this upcoming harmonious celebration.
Not the best time to test out the censors in China
@ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat: It depends. If this is going out to Taiwan, too, then they would want it censored, because the Nationalist Chinese- whom the US also supported, mind you- were in pretty deep cahoots with the Nazis. The reason that China didn't immediately fall to Japan was, paradoxically, that they were using German weapons and equipment for the first years of the war.
I have no idea what countries you're referring to, but I know the holocaust isn't censored in france, germany, austria, switzerland, england... actually pretty much every major EU member
I also have no idea why it would upset their Muslim population at large (and why they would even care if it did if that was the case)
@omgwtflolbbqbye: He's probably misinformed. The Nazi party itself is illegal in Germany and that may be what he's referring to. People don't understand just how much censorship goes on in China. I've been there and spoken with highschool students and as much math as they know they don't know a dang thing about politics or current affairs. People only know what they government tells them. For crying out loud the government mandates when people can turn their heaters on in the winter time! Not joking! Go read Animal Farm. It's about as accurate a portrayal of communism as you can get.
@yantelope(pirate): That's pretty interesting. I've lived in China for some time and I'm basically around University students, but they seem completely different. They tend to take anything the government tells them with a grain of salt. Most of them desperately want to leave the country and study in the US or Europe somewhere, usually not because they hate China or anything, but just because they want to get out and see the world. (Prague must have been in some movie popular there or something... because 85% of the students who want to go to Europe want to go to Prague.)
The ones who are English students go even further as they commonly read English websites and news (BBC, etc...) as part of their study.
Most of then use various, very easy to get programs to go around the firewall in China, most of them pirate uncut versions of games and movies, etc...
I'm not going to say they were all 100% savvy on politics and current affairs, but that'd be ridiculous because even in the US a huge portion of college and highschool kids don't know or give a damn about that stuff. I worked with two people last year who didn't know EITHER Vice Presidential candidate by the end of October. Young people across the world are just too interested in other things, usually.
Well, I'm buying Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes right now, then. I've wanted to get DoW II for a while, but never wanted to spend a full $50 on it. $25 makes it a must-buy. And although I've never played CoH, I've heard it's really good, so I figure I can afford to spend $7.50 on it to give it a shot.
As an owner of all three Company of Heroes games as well as Dawn of War and Dawn of War II, believe me when I say the Relic has the very best thing going on when it comes to RTS games.
DoW II (for me) was GREAT for single-player, while CoH is better for Skirmish/Multiplayer.
Relic games are half price on Steam. I never noticed. What with the huge multi-banner half-page size ad.
I'm guessing DOW is quiet the money spinner for Steam/Relic if Valve are giving them a great huge sale poster instead of the usual small dinky one in the corner for normal WE sale notifications.
Company of Heroes is still awesome. Playing Dow2 now, but find that though it incorporates CoH mechanics into it, it still feels like a regular RTS.
DoW2's cover doesn't seem to provide as much protection as in CoH. It also often feels that cover tends to get overshadowed by the 41st century's awesome weapons and melee fighting. As such, it feels like a regular RTS slugfest.
But then again, I haven't played it more than 10 times... maybe I just haven't gotten into the intricacies of the game yet.
In my opinion, every one of them is worth getting.
Right now I'm playing through all the Company of Hero games again getting all the medals, it's great fun and the missions are really well scripted.
Dawn of War II's campaign was great fun as well and the multiplayer, while pale in comparison, is still good for a few romps.
The first Dawn of War is great if your looking for more traditional RTS gameplay and the balance now is finely tuned, at least in the original.
Protip: Company of Heroes, as great as it is, is notorius for patching. The game and all of it's expansions together have a lot of patches so if you get all all of the series, be sure to install Tales of Valour first and let it patch, after this, all it should take is entering in the keycodes for the first game and expansion to unlock all the content.
@-MasterDex-:
Too true. I remember back when OF first came out, biggest bitch to patch. EVER. Still rings true with the latest expansion. It puts A LOT of people off, which is why the community kinda dwindles after each major patch, or expansion for that matter. Hell it even put me off. I used to play hardcore competitively online, Until the latest expansion came out.
But it was some of the greatest times i've ever had online, really rewarding if you invest the time.
@Spidery_Yoda: I know but if you were to get all three and install them beginning with the first game then it'd take a lot longer than simply installing Tales of Valour, letting it install and patch(part of the initial install time) and entering the keycodes for the previous titles.

but China? they were on the other side. they largely censor their own history for political power but what's the use of censoring others' now?

That's...pathetic.
And by historically accurate, I mean, you know, the fact that the Germans were involved in WW2. That's kind of important.
08/26/09
Really, it's not like the Chinese Government wants people to forget WW2 happened.
