Germany Defeated, Company Of Heroes Heads For China

Even now, Company of Heroes shines as an example of a PC RTS done right. And while it's been successful in the West, THQ and Relic can smell the cash money-making potential from the Chinese market wafting in through their windows, and they're interested. Speaking with 1UP/GFW, Relic have explained that they've got a "five year plan" for China, one that involves a persistent-world RTS with the ability for players to "build their character up from private to general through new multiplayer cooperative missions, gameplay modes, and player-versus-player combat". Hope this isn't just for the Chinese market, because that sounds pretty neat. Can we have it too please?

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Open Beta

More fun with beta testing! Starting tomorrow, PC gamers will be able to go to Fileplanet and download the Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts open beta, but how open is it really? From Relic's website:
Starting August 30th, the Opposing Fronts Open Beta will begin. Anyone with a Fileplanet account can attempt to download and play the Beta. There will be key releases twice a week which will continue throughout the remainder of the Beta.
I like the "can attempt" part. Interested to see how this all works out. I suppose I will log into Fileplanet tomorrow and give a go at testing out the next chapter in one of the best reviewed RTS games of all time. Wish me luck! More »

On Mixing Narrative and Violence in Company of Heroes

Gamasutra has an interesting (short) interview up with Stephen Dinehart, "narrative designer" for Relic Entertainment, the Vancouver arm of THQ. The topic? Well, Company of Heroes in general - more specifically, narrative design, violence, and historical accuracy (or lack thereof). I've read a fair chunk of thoughts on narrative design in an academic context, so it's nice to read how people think the stuff is being applied in real-world situations. Dinehart hopes that these sorts of games aren't just excuses to shoot stuff, and feels that his narrative crafting helps facilitate a more mature examination of violence: More »

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

The expansion pack for the best RTS on the computer seems to add quite a bit of neat little extra to the game. This next chapter in the franchise adds two new armies, new tech trees, two new campaigns, and a bunch of graphical and gameplay enhancements.

This time around you can play from both the German and British perspectives. The game adds a full dynamic weather system that actually impacts the way you play the game. Rain can mud up an area, making it impassable for some vehicles. There's another level, I was told, where you can only see enemy troop movements by lightning flashes. What a cool idea. You can also set the time of death and type of weather for all multiplayer games.

Kotaku Swagu: Microsoft Press Goodies

I lugged around this box for a good eight hours yesterday. Combined with a MacBook Pro, snacks, a pair of Nintendo handhelds and my tiny frame, it made for a gruelling nerd challenge. I never really paid much attention to it, but random people would come up and ask me, "Did you get a copy of Vista?" After responding with "I dunno!" too many times, I decided to crack it open. More »
