I personally liked the direct fire mode on tanks. I thought you should have the option to take control of any tank in the game across the board I enjoyed it so much (but make it completely optional).
But I was really, truly shocked to find out how short the Panzerkreig chapter of the campaign was. I mean, it was like three stinking missions that took me less than an hour altogether. Really?
I'm a sucker for CoH, and I will keep supporting the series, but Tales of Valor felt a lot more like $10 DLC than a $30 expansion. I regret the purchase aside from supporting CoH.
So I gave the poor singleplayer precedence over the multiplayer. But for those interested, yes, Stonewall (basically a Horde mode) is nice.
The new units, though, are mostly forgettable. If they were really NEW units, that would have been nice, but they're basically re-skins of existing ones.
@Luke Plunkett: You recommend that people should buy the first 2 games instead of this one if they have none. However, if they buy Tales of Valor they get all 4 armies to play in multiplayer, and it's most likely cheaper than buying the 2 older games right now. Then they also get all the new modes and unit swaps instead of having them locked.
I recommend waiting for a deal on the older games and buying Tales of Valor now. Of course, Steam had all 3 for $40 this weekend. Hopefully people jumped on that.
Personally, I felt that Opposing Fronts is what killed this game. I'm at least enjoying the new games modes in Tales of Valor, but Company of Heroes was by far and away best as a stand alone title.
As soon as I found out they weren't adding more factions (such as Russian or Japanese) I found this expansion questionable. Glad I didn't rush out to buy it.
@BillyTheRatKing: As soon as I heard there was a mission where you controlled only 1 unit the entire time, I found it questionable.
A lot of people like DoW II, and good for them. But, to me, it is nothing like an RTS. Even the multiplayer doesn't feel like an RTS. I like innovation and people trying new things, but it seems that Relic's new approach to RTSes is to just strip away everything that made them an RTS to begin with. I can understand not liking base building, but if you can't ever build a new base or move your base, you're a sitting duck and it removes a very essential part of the Strategy equation. I really, really don't like this new direction that Relic is going.
The DoWII environment is a piece of fresh air for me. However, the RTS label is improper... It falls into the "TG", tactical game. Commandos used to be this way to.
Fine, you really didn't get re-enforcements. At the same time, it's the same theory. No base of any major description, and it's you and the units.
I think it made Commandos a really impressive game, and in that spirit DoWII is also impressive... Now, when are they adding CSM?
Will be getting this as soon as I've got the money. It won't be from Steam though. I still believe in fair pricing and I'll be giving my money to Gamestop.
This game has the worst pricing on Steam i've seen in a long time. Thanks THQ. Let's have a look.
USA: $30
UK: £30 (err what?)
EU: 35 Euro (wait a minute..)
The prices worldwide on Steam have been getting fairer to us recently, but some publishers still seem to think they can charge FAR more in some regions than others.
Do you know how much this expansion costs on Amazon.co.uk? £17.99. That is where any sane person will buy the game.
Looks pretty cool, though at times the player in the video seemed to be having trouble with aiming/controlling the turret, and other times managing that along with driving. Hopefully it's just another case of a poor player though.
I think the comparisons to DoW II are a bit off... CoH is not really an RPG, you aren't collecting armor/weapons unless they've added that into ToV unannounced. It's just using the same old upgrade system from the main game but in the context of the tank/squad/whatever you're controlling in the new campaigns. So I understand the comparison but it's probably misleading for those who never played CoH. Just saying.
This really isn't a big leap from some of original CoH's campaign missions. Instead of a mission where you get a handful of squads and no base, you're reduced to one squad or vehicle. I think I'll enjoy it. Plus aren't they adding more vehicles/troops for the multiplayer/skirmish modes too?
It would royally suck if they implemented their new gameplay directions of dumbing shit down to arcade levels onto an eventual Homeworld 3 release.
Homeworld, I consider one of the best, if not the best RTS franchise. And if they fuck it up... man, lots of fans would be pissed that's for sure.
I didn't find any aspect of that gameplay video fun, why take away control of an entire legion of tanks and restrict you to one of them, the only difference being that your mouse movements control the turret aiming. wow..
Here's a video of Homeworld 2 with Point Defense System mod, enjoy
To be fair, Tiger tanks pretty much *were* one vehicle armies. I mean the record was 168 vehicle kills (We can only guess at how many actual people!) with a Tiger I by Kurt Knispel. That's insane!
Looks cool, that tank does look somewhat different from anything I can think of, so maybe it's a new unit or unique to a new campaign story. It might be cool to play though a story only controlling one tank.
This is easily my favorite RTS since WC3, maybe favorite ever. It's really different and hasn't gotten old for me. More good single-player is welcome, but yeah I would've loved 1-2 new factions. More maps are much needed, too though.

Sure HQ will bundle them all together like they did for Dawn of War as well.

Opposing Fronts introduced TWO new factions -- British and Panzer Elite.

Are there all the options there were before?
What are the advantages of the new units?
How are the new maps?
How are the new gamemodes?
I'm sorry Luke, but this really isn't a review of any kind, it's more like you taking a cleaveland steamer on the game.

#1-no new factions (really wanted to play with Russians)
#2-if I'm going to only control 1 unit, I really wanted to control an infantry squad, not a tank
Oh well, it sounds pretty solid so far, I'll just have to wait and see whether or not I'll enjoy it.

Ah, but remember Komrade, they were not perfect.
I liked how the the Tiger broke down in mid mission... That's pretty damn accurate.
From a historical perspective, Tigers were the most feared, but Panthers were the most fearsome.
