@TexasJack: I dunno, comparing it to CnC3, it's sounding more fun, I really enjoy their storyline especially [/flamebait] Tiberian Sun, but the gameplay has often left a lot to be desired. Taking it away from the ephemeral units, base-assault centric mode of CnC 3 actually sounds very appealing to me.
I suppose I shouldn't mention that of all the games in the series, I had the most fun with Renegade.
is it better or worse to fling an expensive keyboard across the room while playing against a machine opponent? not that i personally have done that, i want to know about a friend of mine. maybe he's more of a friend of a friends. yeah...
People get in a lot of things for a lot of reasons. You could say people get into "smashing another human being" about most things. Sports, the police, running for President, all have an element of "in yo' face sucka'" to them.
The real issue I think is that gaming is seen to have only that element. The others have some kind of visible positive societal benefit. Until a) the gaming medium develops to create games that have a similar societal benefit or b) people change their beliefs and realize games already have societal benefit (teamwork, problem solving, newb pwning, etc) then this "unbalanced gamer" argument will rage on.
The problem isn't that gaming is seen to have only that element, but that other games aren't seen to have that element.
"Chess players are great people but some of them have very little balance in their life. So their enjoyment is entirely derived from smashing another human in a board game."
"Monopoly players are great people but some of them have very little balance in their life. So their enjoyment is entirely derived from bankrupting another human in a board game."
"Football players are great people but some of them have very little balance in their life. So their enjoyment is entirely derived from smashing another human in a sport."
"Dodgeball players are great people but some of them have very little balance in their life. So their enjoyment is entirely derived from smashing another human in a sport."
"Thumb war players are great people but some of them have very little balance in their life. So their enjoyment is entirely derived from smashing another human in a playground game."
That's a great way to drum up interest in your game. Call your core group unbalanced.
Honestly, its no different from any kind of game you play against someone and find yourself losing or really into it. I think back to when I was younger, and all those games of Monopoly that ended up in a few sibling fights on more then one occasion.
What does this mean for "The Saboteur"? I'm assuming their previous statement of the franchises "living on" means it's not been killed yet but have they mentioned anything about it in this kerfuffle? #ea
@Erode: All this means is that they're defending their trademarks and copyrights. If they say it's dead, it makes it easier for poachers a few years down the road. If they claim it's alive, it's harder to prove abandonment. Never ever take a companies claims about its IP at face value - they're just as likely to be playing legal games. #ea
@badasscat: It could mean a number of business models but the basic tie-in between all of them is the internet.
So, it could mean ...
1. Free-to-play and supported by microtransactions.
2. An MMO or similar "always-online" game.
3. Heavily tied into DLC expansions packs and general content.
And so on.
I think C&C is going to head in the direction of that second option. A persistent online 'world' that has players choosing factions that influence how and where you can fight.
However, I am not sure how to monetize that beyond a subscription fee. Would consumers want that? Perhaps a combination of one and two could work?
(Did C&C3 do something like this? Perhaps I am thinking of another game, but I could have sworn it did ...) #ea
@GohanGVO: I was making a point, and you illustrated it, which is that nobody knows what the hell this jargon-esque term "digital model" means. "It has something to do with the internet!" is not a business model. #ea
There are many "digital models," including the ones I outlined. C&C will, apparently, make use of one, many, all or a new form in order to extend the life of the new product.
Or perhaps I am completely wrong.
Do my examples not illustrate what consists of a digital model? #ea
They have to move MoH out of WW2. I don't care how good the graphics are, how well written the story is, or how innovative some new feature is. I never want to see another Garand or MP40 again. #ea

I'm very interested in seeing some concrete stuff on the new Medal of Honour. With any luck, they'll go the way of Dice and keep dedicated server support for PC and hopefully provide enough guns and gear to make any FPS fan salivate profusely. #ea
@-MasterDex-: If Infinity Ward were making it, I'm sure that they would put in the IR tracking, but would remove any need for it as they would have already taken the 'lean' function out of it. #ea
@kearneybobs: Or a couple of months before release, they would say it's supported then 3 weeks before the release say that they removed it in favour of making the head movement automatic since people were complaining about how hard it was to aim for themselves. #ea
@-MasterDex-: For sure, for me, my first 3 games i played on my AMD 700Mhz athlon were Unreal1, RtCW, and MoH Allied Assualt. Airborne had some cool features, but it lacked heavily in others, and my buddy was even talking down the games graphics constantly, because the effects weren;t what they could of been. Here's to hoping that they get thier act together and put together one good release that will bring back the respect that the franchise once held #ea
@Devilbless: C&C didn't always suck. When it first came out it revolutionized the RTS genre but not it's stagnated and nothing has really changed apart from visuals and the rest of the genre has moved on.
Also, you seriously don't want to be older, you're 17, enjoy the freedom while it lasts cause being an adult sucks ass most of the time.
Whatever happened to traditional Base Building RTS's? I enjoyed locking myself inside of my base until i had an army worthy of the dark lord... Now they got rid of that in most games =(. Bring back base building.... please?

@Michael Dukakis - Mets fan: After Starcraft there was a period where you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting an RTS. Getting rid of base building was a natural response. I agree with you 100%. I loved the crazy defensive structures used in Total Annihilation.
@-Skyline-: Oh god you're so right! Playing defensive for the whole game, staying quietly in your corner of the map, reaching the unit cap then unleashing a wave of destruction and ending the game in minutes is one of the best feelings I've had in gaming ^-^
After all these reviews saying that the RTS genre was stale, and how it lacked innovation...developers have finally started changing the mechanics, BUT THEYVE CHOSEN THE WRONG DAMN ONES!
@-Skyline-: get sins of a solar empire entrenched. it's a defensive rts players wet dream. and it's massive. most skirmishes take like 6 hours. but I do see the point, devs probably don't want their rts denigrating into a 3d map tower defense game.
Or they hate you. Go with the second one, and kick some ass!
@-Skyline-: Agreed :( I really dislike this mobile base / squad based RTS fad going around developers right now. The only reason I still bought and played command and conquer games is because I love base building.
@Skyburnbright: I agree, SC, AOEII, RA and early C&C were my favorites because of base building. RTS used to be one of my favorite types of games until they started getting rid of base building, now there is not a single RTS that has that old school feel. Here's hoping SC2 has good base building. *crosses fingers...
