Did you know there was an even more pretentious way to refer to comics than 'graphic novel'? Thanks to our friends the French Bande Dessinée can be your go-to phrase when you want to compare The Punisher to Infinite Jest.

Which brings us to Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée, a 'slideshow' movie based on Konami's game and released on UMD for the PSP last year.

Turns out (and - honestly - who saw this coming?) that even movies that resemble violent Powerpoint presentations look better on bigger screens, so Konami have 'ported' the flick to DVD. You may buy it now, if you wish.

<![CDATA[ Legendary Backstory Revealed In Graphic Novel ]]> Spark Unlimited's fantasy action game Legendary has become a graphic novel (like a comic only you get to stroke your chin and go 'hmmm' while you read it) available now from indie publisher Top Cow Productions.

Legendary, the graphic novel, is written by Mark Waid - author of DC apocalypse tale Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright and penciled by Top Cow house artist Martin Montiel.

The 96-page comic will flesh out main character Deckard's backstory - including how he came across (main MacGuffin of the game) Pandora's Box, how he came to terms with his powers and why the writers couldn't be arsed giving him a character name not already used in Blade Runner.

<![CDATA[ Geoff Johns Scribes The DC Universe Online ]]> The man responsible for bringing the original Green Lantern Hal Jordan back from the dead has been tasked with bringing the entire DC Universe to life in an all new medium. DC Comics writer Geoff Johns has been tapped to pen the story behind Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online, collaborating with comic artist Jim Lee on the project.
"Taking comic books into the online space presents an exciting and unique opportunity for me as a writer," said Johns. "I'm looking forward to creating a thrilling story that explains why the DC Universe has suddenly been populated with millions of new heroes and villains in a way that will engage players."

Excuse me if I gush a little bit, but the union of these two creative minds can only mean good things for the upcoming MMO. The only thing that could go wrong with a dream team like this working on the project is their work not translating well to the new medium, and that hardly ever happens. Hit the jump for some new screens from the game while I try to swallow that massive lie in the name of hope.

Geoff Johns Announced As Writer For Upcoming DC Universe™ Online Video Game

Acclaimed DC Comics Writer To Script DCUO Back Story

AUSTIN, Texas - Sept. 15, 2008 - Geoff Johns, the renowned writer behind popular DC Comics such as Green Lantern, Action Comics and Justice Society of America, has been brought on to write the saga of the DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer action game from Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) in a first-ever collaboration with legendary comic artist Jim Lee, the company announced today.

DCUO for the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system and the PC is currently in development by SOE in collaboration with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

"Having a writer of Geoff's caliber brings even more authenticity to the DC Universe Online, and should provide fans with an exciting new medium for his storytelling skills," said John Blakely, SOE-Austin's VP of Development. "Together with Jim Lee, who is our executive creative director for the game, we are tapping into the very best talent from the comic book industry."

Johns, 35, was born in Detroit and studied media arts, screenwriting, film production and theory at Michigan State University. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked as an intern and later an assistant for film director Richard Donner, whose credits include Superman: The Movie, Lethal Weapon 4 and Conspiracy Theory.

Johns began writing comics starting with 1999's Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., which he created for DC Comics. Comic writing eventually became his full-time career with notable works including The Flash, Teen Titans, 52, Action Comics, and Infinite Crisis.

"Taking comic books into the online space presents an exciting and unique opportunity for me as a writer," said Johns. "I'm looking forward to creating a thrilling story that explains why the DC Universe has suddenly been populated with millions of new heroes and villains in a way that will engage players."

"We've brainstormed about the DC Universe many times but this will be our first time working together on something of this magnitude," added Jim Lee. "This really shows the level of commitment everyone on this project has to capturing the DC Universe in an authentic, compelling way."

DCUO offers a dramatic online setting where players can enter the DC Universe and battle alongside or against their favorite DC Comics heroes and villains including such icons as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker, as well as many other fan favorites such as Green Lantern, The Flash, Catwoman and Martian Manhunter. The action and drama will play out in such well-known locations as Gotham City and Metropolis among others.

Shame for Marvel fans, but que sera, sera and all that. Anyway, here's what it looked like! Pretty rough code, we know, but you can still get a good idea of the kind of scale they were going for: large, destructible environments, big enough to cram plenty of civilians and destructible stuff into. It's a great idea, and one another developer should notice, steal then put into a game that doesn't get, uh, cancelled.

<![CDATA[ Marvel Changing The Way It Handles Game Licenses ]]> For all Marvel's recent success in the movie business, there hasn't been a decent Marvel video game for years. Something the company are looking at changing. Speaking last week at an entertainment marketing conference, Marvel's Ira Rubenstein said a couple of things that should be good news for comic book fans. One is that he wants the production of movie-based games to begin sooner, so as to allow them more development time. As an example, he says Sega are already working on the Thor and Avengers games, even though they're not due in cinemas until 2010. Rubenstein also says he wants more Marvel games that aren't tied to movies, again for development timing purposes, but also presumably to allow for more creative, appealing uses of the company's characters.

She and I talked about a post that would highlight new comics based on new games: stuff like Dead Space, Gears of War and Brothers in Arms. I figured she'd cover five or six of them. But Tracey's the kind of video game writer who makes a post considering the greatest cats in video game history and lists more than 50 felines.

Now she delivers a breakdown of 31 video game-based comics present and past, with pretty pictures, info and some jokes.

<![CDATA[ Prototype Gets Comic Treatment ]]> prototype_1_cvr.jpg DC Comics and Sierra Entertainment are teaming up to bring yet another video game property to the small, papered, non-screen, as the two companies sign a deal to create a comic book series based on the upcoming open-world action game Prototype. Why Prototype? Says Hank Kanalz, VP & General Manager of DC's WildStorm imprint:
"PROTOTYPE's back-story, visuals and gameplay are stunning, and we have every intention of bringing those core pillars to our book because this is a great opportunity to expand on the world they've created, and build something new and interesting for comic book fans."
WildStorm has done one hell of a fine job with their World of Warcraft comic book, showing an amazing dedication to the source material, so hopefully they'll be able to faithfully capture that Prototype vibe, whatever that vibe winds up being.

DC Comics & Sierra Entertainment To Publish New Comic Series Based On PROTOTYPE Video Game

DC Comics and Sierra Entertainment Ink Deal To Create an All-New Comic Book Series Based on PROTOTYPETM - One of the Most Anticipated Video Games of 2008

Marlow, UK - 15 April, 2008 - DC Comics, the largest English language comic book publisher in the world, and Sierra Entertainment - a division of Vivendi Games, today announced plans to publish an all-new comic book series based on the eagerly anticipated and already highly acclaimed open-world/action video game PROTOTYPE™. The series is set to debut this August via DC's WildStorm imprint, and the addition of such unique, original IP video games like PROTOTYPE is sure to increase their successful line of best-selling comics based on licensed properties. Further details surrounding the new comic book series will be announced later this year.

PROTOTYPE puts gamers in control of Alex Mercer - a genetically mutated shape-shifter with no memory of his past, hell-bent on solving the mystery of his existence - as he tears through a densely populated New York City moving with Parkour-style fluidity and consuming anybody that gets in his way...assuming their physical identity, memories and abilities. Fueled by a three-way war between Alex, the military's elite Blackwatch division and a viral outbreak known as the Infected, players will venture deep into a dark conspiracy, 40 years in the making.

"PROTOTYPE is all about shape-shifting action, and we're using that key element to redefine the open-world game space," said Al Simone, Sr. VP of Global Marketing, Sierra Entertainment. "Another key feature setting PROTOTYPE apart from other open-world games is its incredibly deep, conspiracy-based back-story, and by joining forces with the largest comic book publisher in the world - DC Comics - we can bring this new anti-hero and his tale to an even wider audience of comics fans and gamers alike."

"We're blown away with what Sierra and developer Radical Entertainment have shown us of PROTOTYPE, and know with absolute certainty that this will make for a terrific comic book," said Hank Kanalz, VP & General Manager, WildStorm. "PROTOTYPE's back-story, visuals and gameplay are stunning, and we have every intention of bringing those core pillars to our book because this is a great opportunity to expand on the world they've created, and build something new and interesting for comic book fans."

PROTOTYPE delivers a fresh take on open-world games, with key features separating the game from the rest of the pack, including the anti-hero main character Alex Mercer and his deadly shape-shifting abilities, a stunning representation of New York City circa 2008 as the backdrop, and 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay allowing players the choice to either blend in with the population or fully unleash Alex's deadly powers. With Radical Entertainment behind the wheel using their innovative 'Titanium' game engine, and touting a catalogue of successful titles including the highly acclaimed The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Simpsons Hit & Run and others, PROTOTYPE is aligned to be the ground-breaking open-world/action experience gamers have been waiting for.

PROTOTYPE is planned to release this autumn for next-gen console systems and the PC, and is currently rated "RP" (Rating Pending) by the ESRB. For more information on PROTOTYPE, be sure to visit the official game website located at www.prototypegame.com.

This March Image Comics will begin publishing a six-issue mini-series based on the upcoming video game Dead Spce, according to Comic Book Resources. The comic books will lay out the story leading up to Electronic Art's sci-fi survival horror game.

When they did this for Mass Effect with a book I thought it was a bad idea... until I read the book, then I thought it was a great idea. The thing that made the Mass Effect book so brilliant was that you didn't absolutely need to read it to start playing the game, it just helped a whole lot. More importantly, those of us who did read the book were extra jazzed about playing the game to see what happened. I think it's great how these sort of literary prequels help to emphasize the storyline of a game rather than the mechanics and graphics.

It is a monthly series of mini-series that will explore different aspects of the Halo mythos. It was always planned to be a series of contained stories that Bungie and Marvel felt would further entertain fans of the epic videogame franchise as well as provide a gateway for new fans to step in and be captivated.

That actually seems smarter on Marvel and Bungie's part: Keep it short and focused. Currently, Marvel's Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev are hard at work on the first mini. Looking forward to it.

<![CDATA[ Marvel - By the Way, Halo ]]> halocomics.jpgThe ongoing Halo comic book from Marvel launches in July, and the comic book publishing giant is taking steps to ensure that the title isn't far from their readers' minds. Over at the Halo.Bungie.Org forums, a poster named JaredR found three references to game across two comics:
Ms Marvel #15
When asked if he can track punctures in the fourth dimension, SHIELD operative Baines replies-
"Quicker than I can kill noobs in a game of Halo."

Avengers: The Initiative #2
Cloud 9 has never actually shot live targets before. So when War Machine hands her a pulse rifle he tells her-
"It's just like playing Halo. Just point and click."

Later, while actually fighting-
"C'mon Abby. Just point and click. It's just like Xbox. Just like — Holy — I just blew up a plane."

If you're a Marvel fan, keep track of this over the course of the next two months, and let us know if you catch more references. I'm suspecting a memo came down from somewhere on high 'suggesting' the game be mentioned, but being the scientific website that we are we'll need more proof. Also, Halo. Michael Fahey

<![CDATA[ White Ninja Makes Luigi Cry ]]> whiteninjaluigi.jpgWhite Ninja is one of the best comics on the web today, mainly because I could, if pressed, draw better than they do. Fortunately Scott Bevan and Kent Earle can do more with their crappy little drawings and a few choice words than many comics with high-quality artists could ever hope to do. Plus, the main character is a ninja, albeit a very 'special' one.

Since White Ninja rarely if ever has crossed over into the realm of video games, today's comic is a real treat, even if it does manage to make Mario's brother cry and does horrible things to a true video game legend. Hit the link for the comic. Bring tissues.

<![CDATA[ Marvel Comic Writer: Games Are For Pedophiles ]]>

Marvel's Mark Miller, the guy who wrote the Civil War comic, had a recent sit down with comic site Newsarama to talk about his future plans and the impetus for Civil War.

Things were going swimingly until they got to the last question and the interviewer asked Mark if he would ever be interested in working outside the realm of comic books and Mark deftly inserted his foot into his mouth.

Like all my pals, the TV and movie people have come calling and even the computer game people (which is weird because games are for pedos and I have no interest).

Wait, a guy who writes comic books for a living is saying that games are for pedophiles? I think tipster Neal put it best: What a jackass, especially coming from someone who works in an industry that is often geared toward a young market. What is this, Comic Industry Stupidity Day?

I did note that the phrase was in parentheses, but judging by their use throughout the interview it appears they are meant to denote asides Miller said.

<![CDATA[ Splatterhouse Comic Book Ad ]]> An alert Kotakuite going by the name of Yardarm51 discovered an interesting ad while flipping through a back issue of an Alpha Flight comic book. Issue 90, to be exact...which was part four of the Building Blocks story arc that featured the return of Mac Hudson as Vindicator...not that I was paying any attention. The ad is for the hack n' slash classic, Splatterhouse for the TurboGrafx 16. Click for a larger, more readable version.

A fine example of art of generic comic book video game advertising that continues to this very day. The plot in this one is gripping. Monsters grab this poor man's girlfriend and for some reason cover his head with a mask that gives him the power to kill said monsters. It's almost Shakespearian. Michael Fahey

<![CDATA[ VGCats: Real is Brown ]]> If you've been paying attention, you may have noticed that I love myself some VG Cats. I think Scott Ramsoomair either echoes my feelings on certain issues completely, or his work secretes some sort of pheromone that makes me agree with him. Take this week's comic on creating next-generation graphics for instance (click to see the full comic).
Every time I've seen a screenshot for Resistance, Lair, Gears of War, or any number of cutting-edge next-gen titles, I've been struck by the overabundance of poo-tone. It makes we wish everyone had taken UK Resistance's Blue Sky In Games campaign more seriously. In a way it reminds me of the early days of 3D acceleration, when all lights were either green or purple. Man, I'd kill for a green and purple game right about now.

<![CDATA[ Mario Hits The Funny Pages ]]>

The last time I read the comics section of a newspaper, Funky Winkerbean was still doing his hippie thing and Doonesbury was the most politically charged comic on the scene. I was a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes and anything by Lynda Barry, but I chose to read them in book collections, all at once, rather than have to sift through The Family Circus and The Wizard of Id to get them.

Guy Endore-Kaiser and Rodd Perry have created the quite popular "Brevity" comic that appears in the papers today, taking the space once occupied by do-gooder Mary Worth. Today's edition of "Brevity" features a comic starring Mario, Princess Toadstool and King Koopa. I got a mild chuckle out of it, but I thought it would have actually been funnier if the caption ended with "Mario is dismayed to discover that the Princess is actually a man." I mean, look how big she is...

<![CDATA[ Wii Comic Book Advertisement ]]> While reading through the latest issue of Batman, Kotakuite David came across a two-page comic book style ad for the Nintendo Wii, featuring a black cat trying desperately to get the Wiimote away from the hands of his dangerously hallucinating owner before all hell breaks loose and he launches into an ad pitch. Don't want to spoil anything for you, but the cat doesn't win and the boy manifests his latent mutant (yeah I know, mutants are Marvel) power, allowing him to manifest logos in mid air while changing the background yellow. Since this is the DC Universe, he'd go by the name of Wii Lad, and whenever he meets a stereotypical old Irish gentleman the wacky name confusion will have you holding your sides in laughter.

Hit the jump for full page scans, but beware their mysterious click to view larger image powers.

It was the last time anyone saw the cat alive.

The only problem I see with advertising comic book style is that any message they are trying to convey enters my brain only to be automatically converted into demonstrations on the effectiveness of flakey delicious crust and real fruit filling as weapons against crime.

Thanks again David!

<![CDATA[ FoxTrot Cuts Back to Weekly Reaffirms Love of WoW ]]>

FoxTrot cartoonist and World of Warcraft enthusiast Bill Amend recently announced that he would be cutting back from producing his excellent newspaper strip on a daily basis to a weekly one.

In his explanation he says he wants to get out of the house "and try some new things." OK, after checking out his latest comic I believe exactly half of that.

<![CDATA[ Spiderman in the Mushroom Kingdom ]]> Toyfare magazine runs a monthly comic called "Twisted Toyfare Theater," which mixes action figures and pop culture with often hilarious results. Posion Mushroom have posted scans of the latest strip, which features Spiderman, The Hulk, and Thor traveling to the Mushroom Kingdom.

They've got the whole thing posted at their site, 9 pages of comedy gold from a magazine for creepy toy collectors in their mid-30's. I'm a subscriber!

<![CDATA[ VG Cats eBay Art for Child's Play ]]>

Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats is probably my favorite web comic, combining my love for video games with my secret desire to be a furry. Scott has offered up some wonderful original VG Cats artwork for auction on eBay, with proceeds benefiting the Child's Play Charity. It features Aeris and Leo from his Phoenix Wright piece, and includes both a colored print and a special hacked inked sketch outtake.

If that doesn't strike your fancy, Scott has teamed up with the folks from Applegeeks, Staccato, and Angry Zen Master to create a web comic holiday postcard pack, featuring tactical holiday action! Seeing as the auction is up past $500, I opted to buy the cards. A box of 16 is $12, and all proceeds help the lil' chillins.

Now all we need to do is get Scott to update more than once every two weeks, and it will be the best Christmas evar!
