In relation to Star Trek, I am seriously wondering, why is it that after the movie came out, it became super trendy? I think I preferred Star Trek being mocked to being turned into chibi yaoi desu...
But man. I'm not usually surprised by all the yaoi chibi stuff everywhere, but Star Trek kinda threw me for a loop. I cannot even imagine how that could be attractive.
@Lineofdeath2: Says the person who doesn't know how to capitalize words at the start of a sentence or how to spell "kindergarten". Honestly, why did you reply to him/her?
@Curse lily: they'd pretty much have to redo all the special effects for this to happen - but given star treks popularity coming back - theres an outside chance we'll see it
@Lineofdeath2: I did that on purpose! At least I didn't say "most better", which I was going to! But I figured that was a bit too stupid for my own doings :x
"The Blu-ray releases of the original Star Trek come packed with extras, as well they should, because when you make something very old very clear it generally makes it look even older than it is."
Um obviously you haven't seen the transfers on these discs then. The show looks spectacular in HD, better then it's ever looked.
Film transfered to HD generally does look great if done correctly. The misconception is that anything that was not shot in HD is going to look bad in HD, however film is a higher resolution than HD to begin with. Just take a look at the HD releases of Casablanca and the upcoming Wizard of Oz.
The only time a film source is going to look bad in HD is if it hasn't been cleaned up prior to the transfer, was transfered to HD badly or if it was filmed badly to start with. Neither of which is true for the the Original Star Trek Series with the exception of the original optical effects which have been redone for that exact reason. (Of course you have access to the original optical effects if you want to see them on the discs.)
@TheTwizzler: I've seen the DVD remasters, and they're awesome. Aside from some of the hokier special effects and costumes, the show looks incredible for something made in the 60's. It doesn't hurt that they remade a lot of the outer space scenes in CG either.
I would think that this is the kind of thing they'd package with the movie when it comes out in November.
for promotion purposes, that'd probably reach more people than shoving it in a Blu-Ray box set of the original series that will only be bought by the absolute diehard trek fans.

Soldier_CLE says DON'T STOP AT THE STAR! REVOKE THE WHOLE DAMN THING, OWEN!!! was unstarred
@Soldier_CLE: I'd be all for Blu-ray Star Wars, but I'm definitely afraid of what Lucas might add (or even remove) from the OT when it makes its way to BD-ROM.
I wish he could just, y'know, not touch a damn thing and release it on Blu-ray.
Although I'm pretty content with the widescreen "Limited Edition" DVD versions.
I still can't stand blu-ray boxes. Is sony really that full of themselves that they have to annihilate the design of all the boxes by plastering an oversized blue rectangle on the boxes? Wouldn't a logo in the corner suffice?
@WhiteMage: It's done for product recognition. Not everyone who goes looking for movies is paying close attention to the logos on the box besides the one they're looking for (i.e. the name of the movie) thus if the blu-ray logo were just a small logo in the corner, you'd have a lot of unobservant or just plain lazy people buying blu-rays when they actually wanted the DVD.
The blue rectangle stands out a lot more and as such they are easily recognizable and more decipherable from DVDs. If you remember HD-DVDs did similar with a large, dark red rectangle.
@WhiteMage: Oh Jesus Christ. How is this not common knowledge? SONY DOES NOT OWN BLU-RAY! And, as others have said, its for the consumers who aren't intelligent enough to actually pay attention. Giant blue ugly rectangle is hard to miss.
@WhiteMage: And to think of Toshiba plastering a big red HD-DVD in exactly the same place.
Honest, it's just to differentiate from DVD.
Much Like Wii, 360 n PS3 each have their respective logo plastered on the top.
@WhiteMage: You will actually complain about anything won't you? You need some happiness in your life. Go out, buy a beachball, get a party started, smile!
To quote everyone's favourite traitor "People don't enter Starfleet to become commanders. Or admirals, for that matter. It's the captain's chair everyone has their eye on".
EDIT: on another slightly off topic note was there ever an Admiral that didn't make you just roll your eyes. I mean they either went evil and started secretly breaking terms of peace treaty's or trying to establish a military junta or they just seemed to be plain morons (I'm looking at you Nechayev!)
The only one who doesn't lead to an instant facepalm was good old Bill Ross (baring one... eh.. unfortunate Romulan incident.)
@spiderweb1986: Thats one Movie. Which required a fair bit of hype to get going.
Being a trekkie and fan of the TV series is still way more geeky than Star Wars n Anime.
@Kobun: If you're going by nuisance I'd also put Star Trek on bottom. Star Wars and anime fans are always loudly arguing or throwing references around, but I'll be damned if I can ever find someone with whom I can talk about Star Trek.
@Ornithopterx: Oh God, if we're talking about how annoying the fans of each respective category is, I'm definitely gonna have to go with anime fans being the most goddamned annoying people on the planet. I took Japanese in college cause I actually wanted to learn the language. Big fucking mistake. The class was about 90% anime fans who just wanted to learn the language so they could scream annoying bullshit in high pitched voices and make stupid skits about Pikachu selling ice cream to Naruto. Fuck, now I'm angry for remembering all that.
@raffleking: That's why I took japanese classes at a small local japanese cultural centre. The other students were some businessmen and some aikido students.
Mind you, I found another Monty Python fan amongst the other students and of course when it came time to do skits as assignments we couldn't resist going a bit surreal - we did one about the Red Army being trapped inside a restaurant.
@Koztah: Yeah I've been debating continuing my studies at a center like that here in DC, I just gotta find one. And hearing Monty Python in Japanese would actually be amazing.
@maraxusofk: All of the above. It's a pity really. Labelled as nerds for our love of a sci-fi show or cartoon. Of course, all those megafans of American TV are just as nerdy....they're just too "cool" to admit it.
@-MasterDex-: Well considering the original topic and all subsequent topics were kind of rooted in stereotypes and sweeping generalizations, I figured it'd be ok to speak in those terms here. Obviously I know all anime fans aren't like that, and if you've seen any of my previous comments here you'd see I love to over exaggerate things. Hell I watch and appreciate some anime and a lot of my friends are hardcore into it. I'm just saying that, over the course of three years taking Japanese, it was at times a living nightmare (sweeping generalization/over exaggeration).
And all gamers aren't obese manchildren, but the DO live in their parents basements and don't have girlfriends.
